Ryne Sandberg played for the Cubs for many years, and he was very good. Several years after he retired, he managed one of the Cubs' minor league teams. At no time did the Cubs hire him to be the manager of the actual, major league Cubs, despite the revolving door nature of the job. Sandberg left the Cubs organization just a few years ago and joined the Phillies. Today he returns to Wrigley Field as the interim manager of the Phillies. This is significant because, as I mentioned, the Cubs did not hire him for that position.
There. I just saved you time. You can read that brief summary instead of one of the eighty thousand articles out there right now about Sandberg's return to Chicago. I'd say something about there being more to write about than this, but truly, there isn't much. You can only write (and read!) so many stories about how fantastically awful the Phillies are before you lose the will to live.
Roy Halladay makes his second start back today. He and the Phillies will face Jeff Samardzija, who continues to have a name that sounds like a sneeze and is challenging to spell.
Discuss the game and the stupidity of a Friday day game in the comments below.
