Phillies Minor League Roundup, August 2-4, 2013

Let's all celebrate how good Drew Anderson has been.

Rochester 9, Lehigh Valley 5 (August 2)

Tom Cochran - 5.1 IP, 6 H, 4 R, 4 ER, 2 BB, K, 9 GB, 4 FB
Phillippe Aumont - 2 IP, 4 H, 1 R, 1 ER, BB, K
Leandro Castro - 1 for 3
Freddy Galvis - 0 for 4, K
Tyler Henson - 2 for 3, HR, 3 RBI
Tyson Gillies - 1 for 4, R

Tyler Henson with his 4th home run in his last 4 games since being called up to AAA. Cochran wasn't fooling Red Wings hitters. Lehigh drops the final game with Rochester, but splits the 4 games series.

Lehigh Valley 5, Scranton/WB 1 (August 3)

Tyler Cloyd - 7 IP, 6 H, 1 R, 1 ER, 2 BB, 7 K, HR, 8 GB, 1 FB
Freddy Galvis - 2 for 4, HR, 2 K
Tyson Gillies 1 for 4, HR, K

Rare solo home runs from Galvis and Gillies, combined with a solid Tyler Cloyd performance propelled the IronPigs to victory. Cloyd has been on fire in his last 5 starts giving up only 3 runs (all earned) in 30 innings. Alex Rodriguez on rehab assignment walks 4 times in this game.

Lehigh Valley 7, Scranton/WB 3 (August 4)

David Buchanan - 7 IP, 6 H, 2 R, 2 ER, BB, 4 K, HR, 6 GB, 8 FB
Leandro Castro - 1 for 5, 2B, 2 RBI, 2 K
Freddy Galvis - 2 for 5, R, 2B
Josh Fields - 2 for 5, R, 2B, 2 RBI, 3 K
Cody Overbeck - 1 for 5, HR, 2 RBI, K
Tyler Henson - 1 for 4, R, SB
Cameron Rupp - 2 for 3, R, RBI, BB
Tyson Gillies - 2 for 4, R, 2B, 2 K

Buchanan pitched well enough to line up for a win. The offense went hit crazy with 13 of them. A huge 6 run top of the 6th would be the break-out moment of the game. Lehigh sweeps the 2 game series with Scranton. IronPigs remain 3.5 games out of first and only 1.5 out of the wildcard.

Trenton 6, Reading 2 (August 2)

Jesse Biddle - 5 IP, 5 H, 3 R, 3 ER, 2 BB, 6 K, 2 HR, 5 GB, 4 FB
Matt Tolbert - 2 for 4, R, 2B
Zach Collier - 1 for 3, R, BB, K, CS
Maikel Franco - 0 for 4
Kelly Dugan - 1 for 4, RBI, K (outfield assist)
Sebastian Valle - 0 for 3, BB, 2 K
Anthony Hewitt - 0 for 4, K

It wasn't an outright disaster of a game for Biddle, but certainly not one of his best. Biddle was hurt by the long ball this game, which accounted for all his earned runs. Quiet game for the offense. Austin Wright pitched a scoreless frame in his first appearance as a reliever. He struck out two, walked a batter and gave up a hit.

Trenton 7, Reading 5 (August 3)

Brody Colvin - 5 IP, 6 H, 5 R, 5 ER, 5 BB, 2 K, HR, 2 GB, 4 FB
Zach Collier - 4 for 5, R, K, CS
Maikel Franco - 1 for 4, 2B, 2 RBI
Kelly Dugan - 1 for 4, R, K
Sebastian Valle - 1 for 3, R, BB
Anthony Hewitt - 1 for 3, HR, 3 RBI, BB, K

Brody Colvin moves back to the rotation and reverts to his normal disaster self. Surprisingly, he wasn't hit with the loss thanks to the Fightin's offense. Mike Nesseth would come in the bottom of the 8th and giving up 2 runs (1 earned) to relinquish the lead and take the loss.

Trenton 4, Reading 3 (August 4)

Bobby Bramhall - 3 IP, 3 H, 1 R, 1 ER, 2 BB, 6 GB, 2 FB
Albert Cartwright - 2 for 2, R, BB, SB, CS
Zach Collier - 0 for 3, K
Maikel Franco - 0 for 4, K
Kelly Dugan - 1 for 4, HR, K (fielding error)
Sebastian Valle - 1 for 4, 3 K
Anthony Hewitt - 0 for 4, 3 K

Bobby Bramhall started the first 3 innings of a bullpen game for Reading. Kyle Simon in relief would eventually give up the go ahead run and earn the loss. Maikel Franco with a very quiet weekend as the Fightins get swept by Trenton in the 3 game series.

St. Lucie 4, Clearwater 0 (August 2)

Severino Gonzalez - 6 IP, 7 H, 1 R, 1 ER, 2 BB, 6 K, 3 GB, 5 FB
Carlos Alonso - 2 for 4, 2B, K, CS
Aaron Altherr - 2 for 4
Chris Serritella - 0 for 4, 3 K
Cameron Perkins - 1 for 4, 2 K, CS
Harold Martinez - 1 for 4, K

Gonzalez lowers his ERA to 1.93 and still winds up with the loss. The offense was silent, going 0 for 5 with RISP.

St. Lucie 11, Clearwater 3 (August 3)

Ethan Stewart - 1 IP, 2 H, 3 R, 0 ER, 2 BB, K
Jiwan James - 1 for 4, BB, 2 K (outfield assist)
Aaron Altherr - 0 for 3, BB, 2 K (outfield assist)
Chris Serritella - 0 for 3, BB, K
Cameron Perkins - 1 for 4, R

Amazingly, there are still baserunners that test Altherr in the outfield. Unfortunately, that is all the good I can say about this game. Stewart was chased early, but it was relievers Steven Inch and Jordan Guth who gave up a combined 8 runs (7 earned) in 5 innings of work.

Clearwater 5, St. Lucie 2 (August 4)

Hoby Milner - 7 IP, 5 R, 1 R, 1 ER, BB, 2 K, 8 GB, 9 FB
Jiwan James - 2 for 5, R, 2B, K
Chris Serritella - 1 for 4, RBI
Cameron Perkins - 0 for 4
Peter Lavin - 1 for 3, R, 2B, RBI, BB
Harold Martinez - 1 for 3, R, RBI, BB, K
Bob Stumpo - 1 for 4, HR, 2 RBI, K

Clearwater got a 2 run shot from Stumpo and never looked back. Milner with a great start against one of the best teams in the FSL. The Threshers salvage the series with a win. Clearwater only sits 1.5 games out from 2nd in the division, which will probably wind up playing Daytona for the division series. Something to keep an eye on in the next couple months obviously.

West Virginia 10, Lakewood 1 (August 2)

Jeb Stefan - 4 IP, 7 H, 5 R, 4 ER, BB, 3 K, HR, 3 GB, 2 FB
Brian Pointer - 1 for 4, K
Alejandro Villalobos - 1 for 4 (fielding error)
Larry Greene - 0 for 4, 4 K (throwing error)
Willie Carmona - 2 for 4, R, 2B
Art Charles - 2 for 4, 2B, K
Mitch Walding - 0 for 4, RBI, 3 K
Carlos Tocci - 0 for 3

Pretty craptacular game all-around. Larry Greene is just a terribly disappointing draft pick thus far in his short professional career.

West Virginia 7, Lakewood 3 (August 3)

Ramon Oviedo - 3.2 IP, 10 H, 5 R, 5 ER, BB, K, 3 GB, 6 FB
Brian Pointer - 1 for 3, 2 BB, K
Larry Greene - 2 for 4, HR, BB, K, CS
Willie Carmona - 1 for 4, R, BB, K
Mitch Walding - 1 for 3, R, 2B, BB, K
Alejandro Villalobos - 1 for 3, BB
Carlos Tocci - 1 for 2 (throwing error) (outfield assist)

Oviedo's 2nd start didn't go as well as his 1st, giving up whopping 10 hits. We can all be thankful for a Larry Greene HR, because those are about as rare as a unicorn flying a space shuttle.

West Virginia 5, Lakewood 4 (August 4)

Jon Prosinski - 3 IP, 6 H, 4 R, 3 ER, BB, 4 K, 4 GB, 0 FB
Brian Pointer - 2 for 5, R, K
Larry Greene - 0 for 4, BB, K (outfield assist)
Willie Carmona - 0 for 3, R, 2 BB
Art Charles - 1 for 4, 2B, 3 RBI, K
Mitch Walding - 0 for 4, BB, 3 K

No Prosinski you were doing so good! Anyway, although he allowed more hits in his last start, he allowed more runs in this one and received a no decision. The game was tied going into the bottom of the ninth when Geoff Broussard would give up a lead off walk, sac bunt, walk and single to load the bases. With one out, Josh Bell would reach on a force attempt, missed catch error on second baseman Villalobos, which allowed the walk-off winning run to score. Lakewood gets swept in the 3 game series.

Williamsport 7, Staten Island 3 (August 2)

Shane Martin - 5 IP, 2 H, 1 R, 1 ER, BB, K, 6 GB, 6 FB
Gustavo Martinez - 1 for 4, R, 2 SB
Andrew Pullin - 1 for 4, R, 2B, K
Andrew Knapp - 1 for 3, R, K
Zach Green - 3 for 4, 2 HR, 4 RBI, K
Logan Pierce - 2 for 4, R, K
Gabriel Lino - 1 for 4
Samuel Hiciano - 1 for 4, HR, K

Crosscutter hitters beat up on starter Giovanny Gallegos, which would be enough good enough for a win. Zach Green with a monster performance, hitting his 7th and 8th HR on the season. His 8 home runs ties him for the league lead. Shane Martin has been lights out his past 3 starts (16 IP, 3 R (2 ER), 2 BB, 11 K).

Staten Island 3, Williamsport 0 (August 3)

Mitch Gueller - 5 IP, 6 H, 3 R, 3 ER, 2 BB, 3 K, 5 GB, 4 FB
Gustavo Martinez - 2 for 4, K
Andrew Knapp - 2 for 4, K
Zach Green - 1 for 4, 2 K
Dylan Cozens - 1 for 4, K, SB
Gabriel Lino - 0 for 4, K
Logan Pierce - 0 for 3, BB, 2 K

Mitch Gueller was back on track in this game after some truly dreadful performances lately. Unfortunately, the Crosscutters could only muster up 6 hits, with only 3 of them reaching 2nd and none of them scoring.

Williamsport 2, Staten Island 0 (August 4)

Drew Anderson - 5 IP, 2 H, 0 R, 2 BB, 5 K, 6 GB, 2 FB
Andrew Pullin - 1 for 3
Andrew Knapp - 0 for 2, R
Zach Green - 0 for 2, R, BB
Dylan Cozens - 1 for 3, 2B, 2 RBI, K, CS
Logan Pierce - 0 for 2, BB, K

Drew Anderson is just simply Williamsport's most consistent and overall best pitcher thus far. This is his third consecutive 0 earned run effort in a row. Andrew Knapp was behind the plate for the first time since his arm injury. He was however replaced by Lino at the end of the game. All the run support was provided by Dylan Cozens on a 2 RBI double.

GCL Astros 12, GCL Phillies 2 (August 2, Game 1 of doubleheader)

Ranfi Casimiro - 5 IP, 9 H, 8 R, 5 ER, 2 BB, K, 11 GB, 3 FB (throwing error)
Herlis Rodriguez - 1 for 3, BB, CS
JP Crawford - 1 for 2, BB
Wilmer Oberto - 1 for 3, BB, K
Cord Sandberg - 0 for 4, R
Jose Pujols - 2 for 4, HR, 2 RBI, 2 K

In the short 6 inning game, the GCL Phils were just absolutely crushed. The lone highlight was of course Jose Pujols 2 run HR in the top of the 3rd.

GCL Astros 8, GCL Phillies 3 (August 2, Game 2 of doubleheader, makeup of 7/2 ppd)

Herlis Rodriguez - 2 for 4, R, BB
Robinson Torres - 2 for 3, R, BB, K (fielding error)
JP Crawford - 3 for 5, R, 2B, RBI, K, SB
Wilmer Oberto - 1 for 4, 2B, 2 RBI, BB, 2 K
Nick Ferdinand - 1 for 4, 2B, K

Things were going great until Denton Keys gave up 6 runs (5 earned) in the top of the 9th. This was a bullpen game for the GCL Phillies that went into extra innings after going 2-2 through 6 innings.

GCL Phillies 8, GCL Astros 7 (August 3)

Feliberto Sanchez - 4 IP, 7 H, 6 R, 6 ER, 2 BB, 2 K, HR, 2 GB, 6 FB
Herlis Rodriguez - 3 for 5, R, 3 RBI
Cord Sandberg - 2 for 5, R
JP Crawford - 1 for 4, R, 2 RBI, BB, 2 K
Nick Ferdinand - 1 for 4, RBI, BB
Wilmer Oberto - 0 for 4, K
Jose Pujols - 2 for 4, R, K (fielding error)

What was looking like a loss thanks to a subpar performance from starter Sanchez, the GCL Phils would score 6 in the bottom of the 9th to win the game. The following sequence would start the bottom of the ninth: ground out, single, ground ruled double, walk, walk, single, single, double single. Nick Ferdinand's only hit of the day was the last game winning single that would score Sandberg. GCL Phillies would salvage this series at the very least. Herlis Rodriguez has virtually nothing left to prove in the GCL and probably deserves to be called up as soon as a position is available in Williamsport.
