Phillies Minor League Roundup - April 28, 2014

Lakewood with Monday off, with Alejandro Arteaga getting the start tonight for the Blue Claws. All but Reading sits at the bottom of their respective standings so far this season.

Al Messerschmidt

Pawtucket 4, Lehigh Valley 2 (11 innings)

Greg Smith - 7 IP, 5 H, 1 R, 1 ER, 0 BB, 6 K, HR, 5 GB, 6 FB
Seth Rosin - 2 IP, 1 H, 1 R, 0 ER, 4 K, WP
BJ Rosenberg - 1.2 IP, 3 H, 2 R, 2 ER, 2 BB, 2 K
Cesar Jimenez - 0.1 IP, 0 H, 0 R, BB
Clete Thomas - 1 for 5, BB, K, SB
Koyie Hill - 1 for 4, BB, K
Reid Brignac - 2 for 4, BB
Leandro Castro - 1 for 5, 2B, RBI
Tyson Gillies - 1 for 4, BB, 2 K (throwing error)

Journeyman Greg Smith continues to pitch well (even outpitches Red Sox prospect Allen Webster) and left the game with a 1-1 tie. A Tyson Gillies error would allow the go-ahead run in the top of the 9th. Seth Rosin after a disaster of an appearance his last time out comes out firing. A Tyler Henson pinch hit single would score Matt Tolbert to tie the game in the bottom of the ninth.  BJ Rosenberg takes the loss in this one as he gives up a bases loaded 2 RBI single. Maikel Franco has this game off, but I'm not sure why. A starter has not been announced for today's 10:35 AM game. I'm going to guess its a bullpen game.

Portland 8, Reading 6

Jesse Biddle - 4 IP, 4 H, 6 R, 4 ER, 5 BB, K, 7 GB, 4 FB
Austin Wright - 2 IP, 3 H, 2 R, 2 ER, 2 BB, K, WP
Carlos Alonso - 3 for 5, R, 2 2B, RBI (fielding error)
Brock Stassi - 1 for 5, 2B
Cesar Hernandez - 1 for 4, BB (fielding error)
Cam Perkins - 2 for 5, R, RBI, K
Chris Serritella - 2 for 5, 2 R, 2B, HR, 2 RBI, K
Aaron Altherr - 1 for 4, R, 2B, BB
Logan Moore - 1 for 3, BB
Anthony Hewitt - 0 for 3, RBI, K
Edgar Duran - 1 for 3, R, BB (two fielding errors)

WHY!?!?! Come on Biddle. What changed between the last two starts and last night? Severely disappointing start obviously, as there is no sugar coating this one. Didn't strike out guys and gave too many free passes. The odd parallels to last season continue. Cesar Hernandez commits his 6th error, but continues to hit and get on base. Cam Perkins doesn't know the meaning of cold streak. Serritella hits his first homer of the season. The score to this game was 8-0 Portland going into the top of the 7th. Reading would put up 3, 1 and 2 runs in the 7th, 8th and 9th, respectively. MILB says Mike Nesseth is getting the start tonight. He is a reliever.

Brevard County 6, Clearwater 5

Jeb Stefan - 5 IP, 8 H, 5 R, 5 ER, 4 BB, 3 K, HR, 4 GB, 3 FB
Angelo Mora - 1 for 5, RBI
KC Serna - 4 for 5, R, 2B
Peter Lavin - 3 for 5, 2 R, 2B, HR, 2 RBI, K
Art Charles - 1 for 4, R, 3 K
Nick Ferdinand - 0 for 4, 2 K (fielding error)
Gabriel Lino - 1 for 3, R, RBI, K (passed ball and throwing error)

Jeb Stefan continues to struggle in Clearwater and has an ungodly 7.47 ERA through 4 appearances (15.2 IP). The offense actually almost bails him out, but come up short. Peter Lavin blasts his 3rd homer of the season and has been otherwise pretty spectacular with the Threshers. Clearwater is 5-19 on the season, which easily qualifies for worst in the Florida State League. Ethan Stewart hopes to continue his run of good luck in tonight's game.
