Phillies Minor League Roundup - May 6, 2014

Today's Probables: LHV: Jonathan Pettibone, REA: Hoby Milner CLR: Brody Colvin LWD: Drew Anderson

Charlotte 2, Lehigh Valley 1

Sean O'Sullivan - 7 IP, 5 H, 2 R, 1 ER, 2 BB, 2 K, HR, 7 GB, 6 FB
Cesar Jimenez - 1 IP, 1 H, 0 R, K
Matt Tolbert - 3 for 4, CS
Tyler Henson - 1 for 3, 2B, BB, K
Maikel Franco - 0 for 3, BB
Jim Murphy - 3 for 4, HR, K
Leandro Castro - 0 for 3, 3 K, HBP (fielding error)
Sebastian Valle - 1 for 4, K

Sean O'Sullivan probably throws his best game of the season, yet still loses. Cesar Jimenez has now thrown 4 1/3 innings of shutout baseball since getting clobbered for 4 runs back on April 26. Franco walks for just the 8th time this season. The eventual winning run was scored via a fielding error by Castro, his 4th. Jim Murphy would bring them within one with a solo home run in the top of the 8th (4th of the season). Lehigh outhits Charlotte 9-6. Lehigh has dropped the first two games of this 4 game set after sweeping a 4 game series against Gwinnett. Somewhat bizarre mirroring of their big league club in disappointing followups.

Portland 4, Reading 0

Severino Gonzalez - 6 IP, 6 H, 4 R, 4 ER, 2 BB, 2 K, 7 GB, 5 FB
Cesar Hernandez - 1 for 2, 2 BB
Cam Perkins - 0 for 3, BB
Aaron Altherr - 2 for 4, K
Tommy Joseph - 1 for 4, K
Zach Collier - 1 for 4, CS
Anthony Hewitt - 0 for 4, 3 K
Edgar Duran - 1 for 3, K

Severino with a rough 3rd inning in which he gave up 3 of his 4 earned runs, but also wasn't missing very many bats either. He has had one truly bad outing and a few really good ones this season. The young Panamanian is still doing fairly well despite his limitations both physically and talent-wise. Would be great to see him succeed. The Reading offense was shut down and held to 6 hits and were 0 for 5 with RISP. Anthony Hewitt has now struck out 25 times in 61 at bats (and yet to draw a walk). Cam Perkins sees his 9 game hitting streak come to an end.

Clearwater 4, Brevard County 2

Colin Kleven - 6 IP, 6 H, 1 R, 1 ER, 2 K, 7 GB, 4 FB
Angelo Mora - 2 for 5
KC Serna - 0 for 3, BB, HBP, SB, CS
Peter Lavin - 2 for 4, 2 SB
Harold Martinez - 0 for 4, K
Gabriel Lino - 1 for 3, R, BB
Brian Pointer - 2 for 3, HR, 3 RBI

Clearwater (7-22) with a two-game winning streak! They have two other two-game winnings streaks as well this season. They get the win behind a solid performance from Colin Kleven, who has been all but reliable. Brian Pointer with his 2nd homer this year (2 run HR), sends the ball over the RF fence in the top of the 8th to give the Threshers the eventually winning runs. Gabriel Lino draws a walk! His first with Clearwater in 21 AB's and is actually hitting a little bit better with the Threshers so far (small sample size noted).
