Phillies Minor League Roundup - June 9, 2014

Today's Probables: LHV: Barry Enright, REA: Adam Loewen, CLR: Miguel Nunez, LWD: Tyler Viza

Indianapolis 3, Lehigh Valley 1

Greg Smith - 5 IP, 4 H, 3 R, 3 ER, 2 BB, 4 K, 5 GB, 5 FB
Hector Neris - 2 IP, 0 H, 0 R, BB, K
Tyler Knigge - 2 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 2 K
Leandro Castro - 1 for 3, BB, K
Cam Perkins - 1 for 4, 2 K
Maikel Franco - 0 for 4, K
Cameron Rupp - 0 for 4, 3 K

Other than a poor 3-run first inning, Greg Smith pitched magically. Neris and Knigge combined for 4 shutout innings. The offense managed to outhit Indy 6-4 and still lose. I'd show Franco's numbers, but odds are you know how bad he has been since his two week spurt in May in which he looked like he was turning it around. Perkins got a hit, but struck out twice. Man sure can hit.

Reading 8, Richmond 5

Perci Garner - 3.1 IP, 5 H, 5 R, 3 ER, 6 BB, K, WP, 6 GB, 0 FB
Ryan O'Sullivan - 3.2 IP, 0 H, 0 R, BB, 2 K, 7 GB, 1 FB (also 1 for 1, 2B, SB)
Kyle Simon - 2 IP, 1 H, 0 R, K
Albert Cartwright - 2 for 5, R
Carlos Alonso - 1 for 2, 3 R, 3 BB
Brock Stassi - 1 for 3, 2B, 2 RBI, BB (fielding error)
Sebastian Valle - 1 for 2, 2B, 2 RBI, K (missed catch error)
Aaron Altherr - 3 for 4, 2 R, BB, SB
Peter Lavin - 1 for 5, 2B, 3 RBI, K
Jiwan James - 1 for 1, 2B

Perci Garner, when effective, can be a good pitcher. He was not effective yesterday, allowing 6 walks for the second time in a game this season. He has walked 34 in 63 IP, also giving up 62 hits. Ryan O'Sullivan does it all in relief and at the plate. The next Joe Savery! Kyle Simon winds up getting the win with his solid relief effort. Peter Lavin's only hit proved to be the best of the game, hitting a bases clearing double to put Reading ahead. Reading had trailed 5-2 most of the game. Altherr's bat is coming back from the dead, is batting .351/.415/.459 in his last 10 games. A very positive sign. Carlos Alonso's unreal on-base compiling continues and is .432/.533/.784 in his last 10 games. That's an insane 1.317 OPS over that time. Don't get too excited now, this is a 26 year old playing in AA who repeated twice in Williamsport and Clearwater in his professional career. Could it all be clicking? Maybe. Could it all just be inflated AA numbers for a guy too old for the league? Very likely.

Clearwater 2, Daytona 0

Ryan Demmin - 7 IP, 4 H, 0 R, 7 K, 6 GB, 6 FB
Ramon Oviedo - 1 IP, 0 H, 0 R, BB, K
Roman Quinn - 0 for 4, K
Brian Pointer - 0 for 4, 4 K
KC Serna - 0 for 3, K
Brandon Short - 1 for 3, HR
Anthony Hewitt - 1 for 3, R
Art Charles - 2 for 3, 2 2B, RBI, K

The 26 year old Ryan Demmin did exactly what he should at A level ball, dominating the opposing team. Brandon Short, another 26 year old, hit a HR in this one. Art Charles also with two extra base hits. He actually has the 2nd highest average among regulars on the team with a .249 AVG. Brian Pointer with the golden sombrero. It's just never going to happen for him I've determined.

Hagerstown 5, Lakewood 3 (12 innings)

Ranfi Casimiro - 5 IP, 4 H, 3 R, 3 ER, 3 BB, 8 K, 6 GB, 0 FB, WP
Yacksel Rios - 4 IP, 2 H, 0 R, BB, 5 K, 3 GB, 3 FB, WP
Jiandido Tromp - 1 for 5, 2B, BB, 3 K
JP Crawford - 0 for 4, R, 2 BB, K
Dylan Cozens - 1 for 5, HR, 2 RBI, BB, 2 K (throwing error)
Willians Astudillo - 0 for 5
Andrew Knapp - 0 for 4, BB, 2 K
Andrew Pullin - 3 for 5, R, CS, picked off
Mitch Walding - 1 for 2, 2B, RBI, 3 BB, K
Carlos Tocci - 0 for 4, 2 K, HBP

Lakewood loses a heartbreaker in a game in which they squared off against, who might be, one of the top pitching prospects in baseball (Lucas Giolito). Tyler Buckley would give up the eventual winnings runs in the top of the 12th. Ranfi Casimiro continues to confuse me as his starts are pretty erratic in overall outcome. Today he was a groundball machine with a good strikeout pitch. Yacksel Rios is another guy who has had quietly a nice season (38 IP, 33 H, 13 ER, 12 BB, 32 K). Cozens has his 8th homer of the year (which actually tied the game at 3-3). He is tied with 7 others for 4th in home runs in the SAL this season.
