Phillies Minor League Roundup - June 24, 2014

Today's Probables: LHV: TBD, Greg Smith, REA: Hoby Milner, CLR: Ethan Stewart, LWD: Jon Prosinski, WIL: David Whitehead

Syracuse 4, Lehigh Valley 3 (Game 1 of doubleheader, 7 innings)

Chris Bootcheck - 5 IP, 6 H, 4 R, 4 ER, 2 BB, 5 K, 3 GB, 2 FB
Leandro Castro - 1 for 4, R, 3B
Tyler Henson - 2 for 4, R, 2B, SB
Maikel Franco - 2 for 3, RBI
Cam Perkins - 0 for 1
Sebastian Valle - 2 for 3, R, 2B

The good news is Maikel Franco had two hits! The bad news is Cam Perkins crashed into a wall and had to leave the game. Castro hits his 3rd triple of the season. He is certainly a guy who is likely to see some action with the Phillies this season, for better or worse.

Lehigh Valley, Syracuse (Game 2 of doubleheader, postponed due to rain)

Binghamton 2, Reading 0

Severino Gonzalez - 7 IP, 1 H, 2 R, 2 ER, BB, 7 K, HR, 6 GB, 5 FB
Kyle Simon - 1 IP, 1 H, 0 R
Peter Lavin - 1 for 4, K
Aaron Altherr - 0 for 5, 4 K
Carlos Alonso - 1 for 3, BB
Zach Collier - 2 for 4

Severino has an outstanding game and only really made one mistake. In the 5th he would give up a 1-out walk and then a 2-run homerun to the next batter. Sev then strikes out the next two batters to end the inning. How did the offense back him up? They went 0 for 10 with RISP and left 12 men on base. Kelly Dugan appears to still be out. They are all isolated injuries and bad luck, but Dugan can't seem to shake that "injury prone" label.

Tampa 4, Clearwater 3

Miguel Nunez - 2 IP, 4 H, 4 R, 3 ER, 3 BB, 4 K, HR
Kevin Walter - 4 IP, 2 H, 0 R, 3 K
Ramon Oviedo - 2 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 3 K
Cody Forsythe - 1 IP, 0 H, 0 R, K
Roman Quinn - 0 for 4, 2 K (fielding error)
JP Crawford - 0 for 4, K (fielding error)
KC Serna - 2 for 3, 2 R, 2 2B, BB, K
Harold Martinez - 0 for 4, RBI, 2 K
Brian Pointer - 1 for 4, 2B, RBI, 3 K

Miguel Nunez gets roughed up, but the bullpen picks up the slack and keeps the Threshers in the game. JP's slow start continues with Clearwater as he is getting challenged by the more advanced pitching. Surprising though, is the regression in fielding. He picks up error number 4 with Clearwater in only 6 games. Brian Pointer extends his hitting streak to 8 games and has raised his season line to .240/.325/.365. That is a mark that I wouldn't have though possible a couple weeks ago.

Greensboro 11, Lakewood 3

Mark Leiter - 1.2 IP, 7 H, 6 R, 6 ER, 2 BB, K
Will Morris - 1 IP, 0 H, 0 R, BB, K
Samuel Hiciano - 0 for 3, R, BB, K, SB
Carlos Tocci - 0 for 4 (fielding error)
Andrew Knapp - 2 for 4, R, SB
Zach Green - 1 for 4, 2B, 2 K
Andrew Pullin - 2 for 4, R, RBI, K
Dylan Cozens - 1 for 4, 3 K
Jose Mayorga - 1 for 4, RBI
Mitch Walding - 0 for 4

After 3 starts of giving up only 2 combined earned runs, he triples that number and couldn't make it out of the 2nd inning. The maddening inconsistency from Leiter continues. Will Morris remains super sharp for Lakewood. In 7 games (11.1 IP) he has given up 9 hits, only 1 walk and 2 earned runs while striking out 13. Hiciano steals home for his 7th stolen base this season. Andrew Knapp DH's this game and also picks up a stolen base, his first, and is batting .303 with Lakewood. Carlos Tocci is now 0 for his last 13. Greensboro has just abused the Blue Claws the last two games, outscoring them 25-5.

Williamsport 10, Auburn 4

Preston Packrall - 4 IP, 3 R, 3 R, 3 ER, BB, 5 K, 5 GB, 0 FB, 2 WP
Keivi Rojas - 2 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 2 K
Mark Meadors - 1 IP, 0 H, 0 R
Cord Sandberg - 1 for 5, R, 2 K (fielding error)
Jiandido Tromp - 3 for 5, 2B, 2 HR, 4 RBI
Aaron Brown - 2 for 4, R, BB, K, CS
Rhys Hoskins - 0 for 4, K, HBP
Jan Hernandez - 1 for 3, 2 R, HR, 3 RBI, BB, K
Derek Campbell - 1 for 3, R, K, HBP (throwing error)
Deivi Grullon - 1 for 4, R, 2B, RBI (throwing error)
Emmanuel Marrero - 3 for 4, R, SB (fielding error)

Preston Packrall makes his 1st start (3rd appearance) of the season to mixed results. Cord Sandberg despite a lackluster day, extends his hitting streak to 12 games. Jiandido Tromp appears to still be a man among boys, blasting his 3rd and 4th homer for the Crosscutters. Jan Hernandez also adds his 2nd homer of the season. Once again, a bunch of sloppy defense, but it doesn't factor into the outcome. Grullon also commits his 3rd error with Williamsport, but also shows off that cannon converting a double play and picking off a runner in the game.

GCL Yankees1 8, GCL Phillies 7 (10 innings)

Denton Keys - 4 IP, 5 H, 3 R, 3 ER, 2 BB, 2 K, 4 GB, 3 FB
Seranthony Dominguez - 3.2 IP, 2 H, 1 R, 1 ER, BB, 5 K, 6 GB, 0 FB
Grenny Cumana - 2 for 5, R, 2B, RBI, K
Trey Williams - 1 for 5, HR, 2 RBI, K
Damek Tomscha - 2 for 4, R, 2 2B, K, HBP
Jose Pujols - 1 for 5, R, 2B, RBI, K
Luis Encarnacion - 1 for 5, HR, K (outfield assist, 2B)
Jesus Posso - 1 for 2, RBI
Joel Fischer - 0 for 2 (2 passed balls)
Jake Sweaney - 2 for 4, K, CS
William Cuicas - 1 for 3, R, K, HBP

Denton Keys with a disappointing first start of the season, but the offense left him with a no-decision after a bombardment of runs in the 7th, 8th and 9th to tie the game. Seranthony Dominguez was phenomenal in relief, but was guilty of giving up the walkoff single in the 10th to lose the game. Luis Encarnacion hits his first professional HR and has himself at outfield assist. He was playing LF in this game. Trey Williams picks up his first of the season as well. Damek Tomscha is making a mockery of the GCL thus far, batting .500/.588/.929 through his first 14 at bats with 2 walks, 3 doubles and a home run. Jose Pujols hasn't quite gotten on the start I anticipated he would, but look for him to heat up.
