Phillies Minor League Roundup - July 9, 2014

Today's Probables: LHV: Sean O'Sullivan, REA: Chris Bootcheck, CLR: Miguel Nunez, LWD: TBD, WIL: Mitch Gueller

Lehigh Valley 7, Indianapolis 4

Barry Enright - 7 IP, 7 H, 3 R, 3 ER, BB, 7 K, 5 GB, 7 FB
Luis Garcia - 2 IP, 3 H, 1 R, 1 ER, BB, 2 K
Grady Sizemore - 1 for 4, R, RBI, BB, K
Tyler Henson - 2 for 5, R, RBI, 2 K, SB
Maikel Franco - 2 for 4, 2 2B, 2 RBI, BB
Cam Perkins - 2 for 5, R, 2 2B, K
Sebastian Valle - 2 for 5, R, 2 2B, K

Barry Enright with his first quality start since June 16 and pitched well enough to preserve the win. He even contributed 2 hits and 2 RBIs in the game. The offense collected 8 doubles in the game total. Franco is back and with a vengeance. He is slashing .356/.370/.622 in his last 10 games. Cam Perkins even picks up two hits in this one, in what has been a pretty dreadful July so far for him. Tyler Henson steals his 17th base.

Reading 10, Trenton 1

Adam Loewen - 7 IP, 6 H, 1 R, 1 ER, 3 K, HR, 11 GB, 2 FB, WP
Colton Murray - 2 IP, 2 H, 0 R
Albert Cartwright - 3 for 5, R, 2B, 2 RBI, K
Carlos Alonso - 2 for 3, 2 R, RBI, BB, HBP
Kelly Dugan - 1 for 3, 2 R, 2 BB
Aaron Altherr - 2 for 4, R, 2 2B, 2 RBI, BB, 2 K
KC Serna - 1 for 4, 2B, 2 RBI, K
Zach Collier - 0 for 2, R, BB, K, HBP

That is now 3 straight quality starts from Loewen, who gets his 1st win with Reading. Colton Murray delivers 2 more scoreless innings in relief. Small sample size be damned, but Kelly Dugan is slashing .281/.384/..417 on the season (96 at bats). Aaron Altherr getting back on track after his brief 2nd callup to the majors. He is 5 for 8 in his last two games with 3 doubles.

Clearwater 6, Tampa 5

Cliff Lee - 4 IP, 4 H, 3 R, 3 ER, BB, 4 K, 8 GB, 0 FB, WP
Jeb Stefan - 4 IP, 6 H, 2 R, 2 ER, 5 K, 3 GB, 4 FB
JP Crawford - 1 for 5, K (fielding error)
Art Charles - 1 for 4, R, RBI, 2 K
Wil Nieves - 1 for 2
Brian Pointer - 1 for 4, HR, 3 RBI, 3 K
Harold Martinez - 1 for 3, HR, BB

I'd imagine more than 1,323 people would have shown up in Tampa had they known Cliff Lee was pitching. This wasn't as good as his rain shortened outing from this past weekend. Jeb Stefan came on in relief and got the win. Lino Martinez and Daniel Child combined for a scoreless 9th to seal the win. The Threshers were actually down 5-0 after 7 innings. They picked up a run in the 8th on a Harold Martinez solo blast and then rallied for 5 runs in the top of the 9th to take the lead. It was a 3 run homer from Brian Pointer that put them ahead. Pointer has 4 home runs in his last 10 games and is slugging .411 this season.

Lakewood 9, Hagerstown 7

Jesen Therrien - 1.2 IP, 8 H, 6 R, 6 ER, 2 BB, K
Aaron Baker - 3.1 IP, 2 H, 0 R, K, 8 GB, 1 FB
Scott Harris - 3 IP, 1 H, 1 R, 1 ER, K, 2 GB, 5 FB
Carlos Tocci - 1 for 4, R, 2B, RBI, BB
Andrew Pullin - 1 for 5, HR, 2 RBI, 3 K
Andrew Knapp - 1 for 5, R, 2B, K
Zach Green - 3 for 5, 2 R, 2 2B
Dylan Cozens - 3 for 5, R, 2B, RBI, SB, CS
Larry Greene - 0 for 4, R, BB, 3 K
Mitch Walding - 2 for 4, R, 2B, 3 RBI, BB, K
Jose Mayorga - 2 for 4, R, RBI (passed ball)

Therrien puts the Blue Claws in a 6-0 hole after the 2nd inning, but what does Lakewood do? Put up 7 runs in the next 3 innings to take the lead. Hagerstown would tie it, but RBI singles from Walding and Mayorga would put them up 9-7. Andrew Pullin hits his 7th homer. Dylan Cozens picks up 3 hits, doesn't strike out and steals his 16th base. Zach Green is some kind of machine and perhaps Keith Law was onto something when he was disappointed in not being able to see him earlier this season when he saw Lakewood play.

Williamsport 7, Vermont 5

David Whitehead - 5.1 IP, 5 H, 4 R, 3 ER, 3 K, HR, 6 GB, 4 FB
Frank Rivas - 2 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 4 GB, 1 FB
Cord Sandberg - 2 for 5, 2 R, 3B, K (outfield assist, home)
Jiandido Tromp - 3 for 5, 2 R, 2B, K, SB
Aaron Brown - 1 for 4, 2 RBI, K
Derek Campbell - 1 for 3, 2 R, 2B, BB, SB
Matt Shortall - 2 for 4, R, 2B, 2 RBI
Rhys Hoskins - 1 for 4, 2B, RBI, K
Jan Hernandez - 0 for 4, 2 K
Deivi Grullon - 0 for 4, K
Emmanuel Marrero - 1 for 2, 2B, 2 BB, CS

David Whitehead was having a very good game until he got snagged for a few runs in the 6th. Frank Rivas pitched a perfect 8th and 9th to get his 2nd save. The offense is just on fire right now, especially the top 5 (and Marrero). Cord Sandberg throws out a guy at home and picks up his 2nd triple. Jiandido tromp steals his 8th base and even Derek Campbell picks up his 1st.

GCL Phillies 2, GCL Yankees1 2 (suspended after 11 innings due to rain, to be completed today)

Yoel Mecias - 5.2 IP, 6 H, 2 R, 2 ER, 2 BB, 2 K, 3 GB, 8 FB, WP
Jared Fisher - 3.1 IP, 2 H, 0 R, BB, 4 K, 3 GB, 1 FB
Alexis Rivero - 2 IP, 2 H, 0 R, K, 1 GB, 3 FB
Venn Biter - 1 for 5, R, 2B, K
Freddy Galvis - 1 for 3, 2B, K
Clete Thomas - 1 for 3, 2 RBI, SB
Jake Sweaney - 0 for 2, 2 K
Damek Tomscha - 0 for 3, 2 BB, 2 K (throwing error)
Trey Williams - 0 for 4, K
Jose Pujols - 0 for 4, K
Jesus Posso - 1 for 3
Luis Encarnacion - 1 for 4, K
Olvy Marte - 2 for 4, R

Yoel Mecias is still coming back from TJS and is doing fairly well. Jared Fisher and Alexis Rivero were money in relief. The offense remains a bit stagnant, especially when Cumana isn't playing and Tomscha isn't hitting. Encarnacion has a 3 game hitting streak. Galvis and Thomas on the rehab trail and should be back with AAA relatively soon.
