Phillies Minor League Roundup - July 21, 2014

Today's Probables: LHV: Jo Jo Reyes, REA: Chris Bootcheck, CLR: Jeb Stefan, WIL: Mitch Gueller

Buffalo 7, Lehigh Valley 4 (10 innings)

David Buchanan - 6 IP, 6 H, 3 R, 2 ER, BB, 6 K, 4 GB, 4 FB (pickoff error)
Ethan Martin - 1.2 IP, 2 H, 0 R, 3 K, WP
Cesar Jimenez - 1.1 IP, 3 H, 1 R, 0 ER, 2 K
Jeremy Horst - 0.2 IP, 3 H, 5 R, 5 ER, 2 BB, K
BJ Rosenberg - 0.1 IP, 2 H, 2 R, 2 ER, BB
Maikel Franco - 0 for 4, 2 K (throwing error)
Darin Ruf - 3 for 4, R, K
Leandro Castro - 2 for 4, R, K
Cam Perkins - 1 for 4, R, 2B, RBI, K
Sebastian Valle - 1 for 3, 2B, 2 RBI, K (2 passed balls)

Poor David Buchanan is left with a no-decision in a solid effort. Ethan Martin continues to show a semblance of a decent relief pitcher. Jeremy Horst and BJ Rosenberg should give way to the Colton Murray and Cody Forsythe's of the organization at this point. Darin Ruf has 6 hits in his last 3 games. At this pace he should be called up as soon as the big league roster is purged or he could very well be included in a package as a throw in.

Erie 5, Reading 4

Hoby Milner - 3.2 IP, 10 H, 4 R, 4 ER, 2 BB, K, HR, 4 GB, 3 FB
Mike Nesseth - 2.1 IP, 2 H, 0 R, 2 K
Colton Murray - 1 IP, 0 H, 1 R, 0 ER, 2 BB, K
Kyle Simon - 1 IP, 0 H, 0 R, BB, K
Peter Lavin - 1 for 5, R, K
Kelly Dugan - 1 for 4, 2B
Jake Fox - 1 for 3, HR, 2 RBI, K, HBP (throwing error)
Aaron Altherr - 1 for 4, K
Carlos Alonso - 2 for 4, 2B
Zach Collier - 1 for 4, R, 3 K

Milner hasn't had a good July, giving up 19 earned runs 3 starts (19.2 IP). Colton Murray gets hit with the loss with allowing a leadoff runner to score (who reached via a Jake Fox error). Everyone on the team collected at least 1 hit, but Alonso was the only one with multiple. The team also didn't force a walk all game. That Fox guy also hit his 4th homer in his last 8 games and has 11 overall on the season with Reading.

Clearwater 4, Charlotte 3

Jordan Guth - 6 IP, 5 H, 1 R, 1 ER, 6 K, HR, 7 GB, 3 FB
Lino Martinez - 1 IP, 0 H, 0 R, BB, 2 K
Cody Forsythe - 1.2 IP, 0 H, 0 R, BB, K
Roman Quinn - 0 for 3, R, BB
JP Crawford - 0 for 2, R, BB
Carlos Ruiz - 0 for 2, R, HBP
Art Charles - 2 for 3, R, 3B, 3 RBI
Brian Pointer - 1 for 3, RBI, K
Harold Martinez - 1 for 3

This wasn't a very exciting game, but Guth has been utterly fantastic as of late and easily has his best outing of the year last night (both starting and relieving). The tall 23 year old righty has definitely been a bright spot among pitchers this season. Art Charles provided pretty much all the offense in this one.

Lakewood, Kannapolis (postponed due to rain)

Brooklyn 5, Williamsport 2

David Whitehead - 5 IP, 11 H, 5 R, 5 ER, BB, 5 K, 5 GB, 1 FB, WP
Bryan Sova - 1 IP, 1 H, 0 R
Drew Stankiewicz - 2 for 3, R, 2B, BB
Jiandido Tromp - 0 for 3, 2 K
Aaron Brown - 0 for 4, RBI, K
Matt Shortall - 1 for 4, R, K, SB
Wilmer Oberto - 2 for 4, 2B, RBI, K
Cord Sandberg - 0 for 4, K
Jan Hernandez - 0 for 4, K
Sean McHugh - 1 for 4, 2 K
Emmanuel Marrero - 1 for 3, K

This was easily Whitehead's worst start of the season, giving up a season high 11 hits after giving up a then season high 8 hits in his last start. Cord is 0 for 20 in his last 6 games with 8 strikeouts and no walks. Jan Hernandez's average is down to .180 through 100 at bats in Williamsport. The offense is overwhelmingly under-performing as of late.

GCL Yankees2 7, GCL Phillies 3

Luis Morales - 5 IP, 3 H, 0 R, BB, 4 K, 7 GB, 0 FB, WP
Venn Biter - 2 for 4, R, K (outfield assist, 2B)
Gregori Rivero - 2 for 3, 2B, RBI
Damek Tomscha - 0 for 3, BB, 2 K (fielding error)
Jose Pujols - 0 for 4, 3 K
Trey Williams - 2 for 4, R, 2B, K
Luis Encarnacion - 1 for 3, HR, 2 RBI (fielding error)

In starts 2, 5 and 6 (yesterday) this season, Morales has gone 15 innings and given up only 13 hits, 2 earned runs and walked 1, while striking out 14. In starts 1, 3 and 4 he has gone 12.1 innings and given up 21 hits, 10 earned runs and 4 walks, while striking out only 8. In Trey Williams last 5 games he is batting .389/.421/.444, which is a great sign for a guy who has struggled to get going. 16 year old Luis Encarnacion hit is 2nd professional HR and is the youngest player both in the GCL and stateside by my count.
