Phillies Minor League Roundup - July 22, 2014

Today's Probables: LHV: Sean O'Sullivan, REA: Severino Gonzalez, CLR: Colin Kleven, LWD: Yoel Mecias, WIL: Brandon Leibrandt

Buffalo 7, Lehigh Valley 6

Jo-Jo Reyes - 5 IP, 9 H, 7 R, 7 ER, HR, 7 GB, 5 FB (fielding error)
Hector Neris - 2 IP, 1 H, 0 R, K, 2 GB, 2 FB, WP
Tyler Knigge - 2 IP, 4 H, 0 R, BB, 6 GB, 0 FB, WP
Maikel Franco - 0 for 2, K
Leandro Castro - 1 for 3, BB, K (outfield assist, 1B)
Sebastian Valle - 1 for 4, R, K

Jo-Jo Reyes is a really bad pitcher. He isn't even mediocre like the recently injured Marquis. He has a major league career ERA of 6.05, 5.33 FIP and 1.637 WHIP through 334.2 innings. He is worse than the recently released Barry Enright. Anyway, the Iron Pigs made it interesting scoring 5 runs in the bottom of the 5th to bring the game to within a run of tying it. Maikel Franco leaves the game with back tightness and is listed as day to day. I'd imagine they will give him a few days off.

Reading 9, Erie 3

Chris Bootcheck - 7 IP, 5 H, 3 R, 3 ER, 3 BB, 5 K, 2 HR, 7 GB, 4 FB
Seth Rosin - 1 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 2 K
Nefi Ogando - 1 IP, 2 H, 0 R
Albert Cartwright - 4 for 5, 2 R, 2 2B, RBI, K, SB
Carlos Alonso - 0 for 4, BB
Kelly Dugan - 2 for 4, 3 R, RBI, BB, HBP
Jake Fox - 3 for 5, 2B, 2 HR, 6 RBI, 2 K
Aaron Altherr - 0 for 4, BB
Brock Stassi - 2 for 4, R
Peter Lavin - 1 for 4, 2B, RBI, K

Two solid starts in a row for Bootcheck, who was only really hurt by the long ball. Seth Rosin has been excellent for Reading since being demoted from Lehigh Valley and holds a 2.21 ERA through 20.1 innings with 19 hits, 6 walks and 12 strikeouts. Albert Cartwright with a big game and you'd have to think he is more than deserving of a promotion to Lehigh by now. Though with both Hernandez back and Nate Spears on the Iron Pigs, he might not get a chance. Kelly Dugan is showing everything but power right now. His .288/.390/.410 slash line for the season is quite impressive. It gets harder and harder to ignore Jake Fox these days, especially after last night when he hit homeruns number 12 and 13 for Reading. He has only been with the Fightin's 36 games and has to be among the minor league leaders in HR with 29 this season.

Charlotte 7, Clearwater 5

Jeb Stefan - 5 IP, 6 H, 6 R, 6 ER, 3 BB, K, HR, 5 GB, 6 FB, WP
Ethan Stewart - 2 IP, 3 H, 1 R, 1 ER, 2 K
Kevin Walter - 2 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 2 K
Roman Quinn - 0 for 4, BB, K, SB
JP Crawford - 1 for 3, R, RBI, BB
Carlos Ruiz - 1 for 5, R, 2B, 2 RBI
Art Charles - 2 for 5, HR, 2 RBI, K
Brian Pointer - 2 for 5, 2B, 2 K
Harold Martinez - 1 for 4

Jeb Stefan had some nice starts in June, but the wheels have fallen off since. He's given up 90 hits, 32 walks and 55 earned runs in 80.1 innings. Ethan Stewart has yet to have a clean outing as a reliever (11 innings). Roman Quinn steals his 12th base. JP's peripherals are still excellent as he moves up the organizational ladder. His K% sits around 18% and his walk rate is 11% with Clearwater. Art Charles hits his 10th homer last night and is slugging .474 in his last 10 games...though only has 9 hits over that span. I keep waiting for Pointer to slow down, but even with a little lull in production last week, it seems like he is back on track.

Williamsport 6, Batavia 5

Mitch Gueller - 6 IP, 5 H, 1 R, 1 ER, 2 BB, 7 GB, 5 FB
Frank Rivas - 1.1 IP, 1 H, 3 R, 3 ER, 2 BB, 3 K, WP
Calvin Rayburn - 1.2 IP, 2 H, 1 R, 1 ER, BB, K
Derek Campbell - 0 for 4, R, K, HBP
Jiandido Tromp - 4 for 5, 3 R, 2 HR, 4 RBI, SB
Aaron Brown - 2 for 4, R, BB, K, CS
Rhys Hoskins - 1 for 5, 2B, 2 RBI
Wilmer Oberto - 0 for 2, BB, HBP
Cord Sandberg - 2 for 4
Deivi Grullon - 1 for 4, K
Drew Stankiewicz - 4 for 4, R, 2 SB
Emmanuel Marrero - 0 for 4, K

Mitch Gueller has been great in 5 of his 7 starts this season. In those 5 good starts (28 innings) he has only given up 3 earned runs on 20 hits, 9 walks and has struck out 14. This is great for a guy that struggled so bad in 2012-2013. He is a little old for the league, but his learning curve is probably right where it should be.  That Tromp guy sure can smack 'em, can't he? He hits homers 8 and 9 last night, which puts him in 3rd in the NY/Penn League. Worth noting he is also a year younger than the leaders in front of him. Cord Sandberg gets back on track with a couple singles last night. Stankiewicz goes 4 for 4 and collects 2nd and 3rd steals of the season.

GCL Yankees2 8, GCL Phillies 3

Nic Hanson - 2.1 IP, 3 H, 3 R, 3 ER, 5 BB, 2 K, 4 GB, 0 FB
Venn Biter - 0 for 5, 3 K
Tim Zier - 2 for 4, R
Jesus Posso - 0 for 3
Damek Tomscha - 0 for 4
Carlos Duran - 2 for 3, R, BB, K
Jose Pujols - 0 for 2, RBI, BB, K, CS
Trey Williams - 2 for 4, 2B, HR, K
Luis Encarnacion - 1 for 3, BB
William Cucias - 0 for 3, BB, 2 K

Nic Hanson's 2nd rehab start was a bit of a disaster. After going 4 scoreless innings in his first start, he gets lifted in the 3rd after loading the bases on back-to-back walks. Trey Williams hot streak continues and has a nice little 6 game hitting streak.
