The Mets and Phillies play the final game of their three-game set today at Citi Field in New York. The Mets won the opener on Monday 7-1, torching A.J. Burnett in the process. The Phils bounced back last night with a sterling performance from Cole Hamels, 6-0.
Today, Kyle Kendrick takes the mound for the Phils. Kyle won his last outing, a 9-5 victory over the Arizona Diamondbacks, and will look to improve upon a ghastly 10.29 ERA in the first inning this year. Kendrick, 5-10 with a 4.87 ERA this season, has allowed three or more runs in four straight starts.
He'll be opposed by Zack Wheeler, who is red-hot. He's allowed just one run in each of his last five starts, good for a 2-0 record and a 1.41 ERA in those five outings. Overall, he's 5-8 with a 3.64 ERA this season.
Marlon Byrd is back in the lineup for the Phils today, notable because he sat last night after fouling a ball off his foot in two of the previous three games. All eyes will be on a Hugwatch in the dugout, in the event Byrd gets moved to a contender today. Carlos Ruiz, Domonic Brown and Jimmy Rollins get the day off.
