Oh, Phillies.
On Charlie Manuel night, the Phillies sputtered and died offensively and were defeated by the Mets 2-1 in extra innings. They ended up with just five hits over 11 innings, and one of them was a Carlos Ruiz home run. Dillon Gee absolutely stumped the Phillies. Quite a change from when Ryan Howard and Jimmy Rollins would tee off on him.
And in other news, Domonic Brown is having all sorts of problems.
The gist of a hit-and-run is for Dom Brown to be standing on third base right now.

Yup, Sandberg put on a hit and run and Brown stopped at second, unable to make it to third.
...and there is the long fly ball that was supposed to score him.

Now, you can't say that would have been the winning run. We don't know what would have happened, if Chooch would have still hit that home run. But in a game where the Phillies scored just one run, that missed run looms large. Later in the game, Brown laid out and tried to grab a misread liner to shallow right and missed it completely. Cole Hamels was pretty unhappy, since that went down as an earned run for him, the only run that Hamels would allow on the night.
For his part, Hamels wasn't at his tip top best. The defense bailed him out a few times with some well-timed grabs and double plays. But he was still Cole Hamels. He went seven innings and struck out five. Here are some tweets for thought:
The Phillies have had more than 3 runs scored while Cole Hamels is still in the game once in his last 12 starts, tonight included. BAD

Hamels since June 1: 99.2 IP, 100 K, 28 BB, 1.45 ERA. His ERA is 2.37 on the season. 14 straight starts of 3 or fewer runs. Fire.

Yeah. This is Cole Hamels' life now. He's pitching insanely well, but he cannot catch a break.
Tomorrow at 1:35 the Phillies will try and avoid being swept. In the meantime, I will try and avoid thinking about this game.

I can't leave you like that, so here's JIM JAM working the hot dog cannon at the game tonight. He's just the best.
