Phillies Minor League Roundup - August 11, 2014

Today's Probables: LHV: Jo Jo Reyes, REA: Aaron Nola, CLR: Yoel Mecias, LWD: Jon Prosinski, WIL: Feliberto Sanchez

Lehigh Valley 4, Columbus 0

Jeff Manship - 3.2 IP, 5 H, 0 R, 3 BB, 3 K
Ethan Martin - 3.1 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 3 K
Luis Garcia - 2 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 3 K
Cesar Hernandez - 0 for 4, K
Freddy Galvis - 2 for 4, R, RBI
Maikel Franco - 0 for 4, K
Russ Canzler - 2 for 4, 2 R, 2B, HR, 2 RBI
Leandro Castro - 0 for 2, BB, K, SB
Cam Perkins - 1 for 4, R, K

This was actually Jeff Manship's first scoreless outing in Lehigh this season (5 appearances). Ethan Martin really shut things down and in his last 10 games has a .213 ERA and holding opponents to a .232 average. He has struck out 36 batters and walked 17 in 39.1 innings with Lehigh this season. The walk-rate has actually improved recently. Luis Garcia has given up 3 earned runs in 38 innings with the Iron Pigs. Say what you will about Garcia's stuff, but that is damn impressive no matter how you slice it. The offense didn't do much, but enough to get the win. Canzler hits his 11th HR and Castro steals his 7th base.

Clearwater 2, Brevard County 1

Jesse Biddle - 5 IP, 3 H, 1 R, 1 ER, 5 BB, 4 K, 6 GB, 2 FB, WP
Cody Forsythe - 2.2 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 2 BB, 3 K
Ulises Joaquin - 1.1 IP, 1 H, 0 R
Roman Quinn - 0 for 4, 3 K
Anthony Phillips - 2 for 4, HR
JP Crawford - 1 for 4, SB (fielding error)
Art Charles - 0 for 4, 4 K
Brian Pointer - 0 for 3, BB, 2 K, SB
Harold Martinez - 2 for 3, R
Gabriel Lino - 0 for 4, K

Jesse Biddle makes his 2nd start since coming back from his depression induced leave of absence. This wasn't as flashy as his no-hitter last time out, but there are still some positives out of this. Yes, he walked 5 batters. Those 5 batters all reached base in the first 3 innings. Biddle actually was able to settle down for innings 4 and 5. Despite the 5 walks, he was able to hold Brevard County to 1 run on 3 hits. JP Crawford steals his 6th stolen base with Clearwater and 20th overall this season. He is 20 for 30 this season, which is a much better ratio than a couple months ago. Great to see him improving his baserunning skills as the season has gone on.

Lakewood, Greensboro (postponed due to rain)

Lowell 2, Williamsport 0

Brandon Leibrandt - 7 IP, 2 H, 1 R, 1 ER, 2 BB, 10 K, HR, 2 GB, 6 FB (throwing error)
Edubray Ramos - 1 IP, 1 H, 1 R, 1 ER, K
Cord Sandberg - 1 for 4
Jiandido Tromp - 0 for 4, K
Rhys Hoskins - 0 for 3, K, HBP
Derek Campbell - 0 for 3, 2 K
Deivi Grullon - 1 for 3
Jan Hernandez - 0 for 3, 2 K
Chase Harris - 1 for 3, 2B
Emmanuel Marrero - 0 for 3

Leibrandt has now thrown back-to-back 10 strikeout games. He has lost both of those games. In his last start he gave up 4 earned runs, but this time he only gave up a solo shot to receive the loss. Leibrandt is holding opponents to a .193 batting average, a 0.83 WHIP, struck out 60 and walked only 9 in 50.2 IP across 2 levels. I have a feeling we will see Leibrandt in Lakewood very soon. Williamsport offense is pretty woeful to the point that they are the 2nd worst run producing team in the NY/Penn League. They have the worst OBP in the league for what its worth as well.

GCL Phillies 14, GCL Yankees1 7

Luis Morales - 3 IP, 4 H, 4 R, 2 ER, BB, K
Seranthony Dominguez - 2 IP, 2 H, 1 R, 0 ER, 3 BB, WP
Francibel Alejo - 3 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 2 K
Gregorio Santos - 1 IP, 3 H, 2 R, 2 ER, BB, K
Olvy Marte - 1 for 5, R, 3B, 2 RBI, BB
Tim Zier - 1 for 5, R, RBI, BB
Grenny Cumana - 2 for 5, 3 R, 2B, RBI, HBP
Damek Tomscha - 0 for 5, 2 R, RBI, BB, K (fielding error)
Carlos Duran - 0 for 2, K
Jesus Posso - 0 for 1, R, 2 BB, K, HBP (fielding error)
Jose Pujols - 3 for 5, R, 2 RBI, BB, K
Gregori Rivero - 1 for 2, R, 2B, 3 RBI, K
Luis Encarnacion - 3 for 5, 2 R, RBI
Gustavo Martinez - 3 for 4, 2 R, RBI

Luis Morales remains completely inconsistent. Grenny Cumana is just a delight. In Jose Pujols' last 15 games he is slashing .293/.349/.500 with 2 home runs. Downside he is also striking out 34% of those at bats. Baby steps for the guy with monster power potential.
