Phillies Minor League Roundup - August 27, 2014

Today's Probables: LHV: Jeff Manship, REA: Hoby Milner, CLR: Colin Kleven, LWD: Yoel Mecias, WIL: Ricardo Pinto

Lehigh Valley 5, Pawtucket 1

Greg Smith - 7 IP, 3 H, 0 R, 3 BB, 2 K, 6 GB, 12 FB
Jeremy Horst - 1 IP, 0 H, 0 R, K
Tyler Knigge - 1 IP, 2 H, 1 R, 1 ER
Cesar Hernandez - 1 for 3, R, BB, K
Maikel Franco - 2 for 3, 2B, 2 RBI, BB, CS
Cam Perkins - 1 for 4, R, SB
Cameron Rupp - 1 for 4, 2B, RBI

A walk! A walk! Franco works his first walk in the month of August, all the while collecting two more hits including his 32nd double of the season. He was caught stealing for the first time this season, but you have to question either the manager or his judgment in event attempting to do so. Cam Perkins seems to be hitting a little better of late and steals his 3rd base with Lehigh Valley.

Reading 5, Portland 2

Adam Loewen - 5 IP, 5 H, 2 R, 2 ER, 6 BB, 3 K, 8 GB, 3 FB, WP
Mike Nesseth - 2 IP, 0 H, 0 R
Nefi Ogando - 2 IP, 0 H, 0 R, BB, 3 K
Carlos Alonso - 2 for 4, 2B, RBI, CS
Peter Lavin - 0 for 4
Jake Fox - 1 for 4, HR, 2 K
Aaron Altherr - 2 for 4, R, K, SB
KC Serna - 0 for 4, K
Zach Collier - 0 for 3, 2 K, HBP
Logan Moore - 2 for 4, HR, 2 RBI

Another effectively wild start from Loewen who has now walked 56 in 108.2 innings this season, but holds a very nice 3.15 ERA. Nesseth also seems to be taking back to his relief role after a disastrous turn as a starter. Jake Fox hit his 22 HR (38th overall). He is still sadly 5 behind leader Kris Bryant. Maybe we can trade Hamels for this Bryant guy!

Clearwater 9, Tampa 7 (11 innings)

Jordan Guth - 4.1 IP, 5 H, 5 R, 5 ER, 3 BB, K, 2 HR, 4 GB, 6 FB, 2 WP
Cody Forsythe - 1.2 IP, 2 H, 1 R, 0 ER, 2 BB, K
Ethan Stewart - 2 IP, 4 H, 1 R, 1 ER, 4 K
Ulises Joaquin - 3 IP, 2 H, 0 R, BB, 4 K
Jesmuel Valentin - 2 for 6, 2 R
JP Crawford - 2 for 4, 2 R, BB, HBP (throwing error)
Brian Pointer - 0 for 4, 2 R, 2 BB, K, SB
Art Charles - 2 for 4, 2B, 2 RBI, K, HBP
Gabriel Lino - 1 for 4, K
Herlis Rodriguez - 3 for 5, RBI, 2 K

Despite the lackluster start from Guth, the Threshers were able to come back and tie the game up with 3 runs in the top of the 9th. A two RBI single from Brandon Short drove in the two eventual winning runs in the 11th. JP Crawford with another multi-hit game and reaches base 4 times in the game. Brian Pointer picks up his 14th stolen base.

Hickory 3, Lakewood 2

Jon Prosinski - 7 IP, 4 H, 1 R, 1 ER, 3 BB 7 K, 10 GB, 1 FB, WP
Nick Rodesky - 2 IP, 2 H, 2 R, 2 ER, 2 BB, 3 K, HR, WP
Malquin Canelo - 1 for 4, R, K
Aaron Brown - 1 for 4, 2B, 2 K
Andrew Knapp - 1 for 4, 2B, RBI, 2 K
Zach Green - 0 for 4, K
Dylan Cozens - 0 for 4, 3 K
Willians Astudillo - 0 for 2, BB
Mitch Walding - 1 for 3, HR, 2 K
Larry Greene - 0 for 3, K

Jon Prosinski has become a groundball machine. If he ever becomes less hittable (which isn't likely because he is all about pitching to contact), he could be molded into a decent 5th starter. Time will tell for sure because he wasn't very good in Clearwater this season. Mitch Walding hit his 7th homer of the season and Teddy Willians doesn't get a hit, but works a walk. *insert Larry Greene gripe/joke*

State College 6, Williamsport 0

Alejandro Arteaga - 6 IP, 5 H, 4 R, 2 ER, 3 K, 10 GB, 5 FB
Mark Meadors - 0.2 IP, 2 H, 2 R, 1 ER, 2 BB
Manny Martinez - 1.1 IP, 2 H, 0 R, BB, 3 K
Cord Sandberg - 2 for 4
Jiandido Tromp - 1 for 4, 2B (fielding error)
Derek Campbell - 0 for 4
Jose Pujols - 2 for 4, 2B, 2 K
Jan Hernandez - 1 for 4, 2 K (two fielding errors)
Deivi Grullon - 1 for 3, K
Emmanuel Marrero - 0 for 2, HBP

Two quality starts to end the season for Arteaga. Cord Sandberg with a multi-hit game for the first time since August 14. Cord is ending the year with a ton of hits, but are coming at roughly 1 a game. I'd really like a good Sandberg to be on the Phillies in the near future at some point.

GCL Phillies 3, GCL Pirates 0

Denton Keys - 6 IP, 4 H, 0 R, BB, 5 K, 10 GB, 3 FB
Austin Davis - 3 IP, 2 H, 0 R, 3 K
Jake Sweaney - 1 for 3
Venn Biter - 2 for 2, 2B, RBI (fielding error) (outfield assist, 2B)
Grenny Cumana - 0 for 4, R, BB
Tim Zier - 2 for 3, R, BB
Damek Tomscha - 0 for 3, 2 RBI, K
Gustavo Martinez - 1 for 4, K, SB (outfield assist, 1B)
Carlos Duran - 1 for 4, K
William Cucias - 0 for 4 (2 fielding errors)
Trey Williams - 2 for 4, R, 2 2B, K
Joel Fisher - 0 for 4, 2 K
