Phillies Minor League Roundup - August 28, 2014

Today's Probables: LHV: Jason Marquis, REA: Aaron Nola, CLR: Kevin Walter, LWD: Yacksel Rios, WIL: David Whitehead

USA TODAY Sports

Pawtucket 8, Lehigh Valley 5

Jeff Manship - 3.1 IP, 7 H, 4 R, 3 ER, 4 BB, 5 K, 4 GB, 1 FB, WP
Jeremy Horst - 2.2 IP, 1 H, 0 R, BB, 4 K
Phillippe Aumont - 0.1 IP, 3 H, 4 R, 4 ER, 2 BB, K, WP
Miguel Alfredo Gonzalez - 1.2 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 5 K
Hector Neris - 1 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 2 K
Cesar Hernandez - 4 for 4, R, 2B, 3B, RBI, BB
Maikel Franco - 1 for 2, RBI
Cam Perkins - 3 for 4, 2B, BB
Sebastian Valle - 0 for 5, 3 K

Phillippe Aumont putting those final nails into his Phillies career. I would be shocked if he is still with the organization following the upcoming offseason. Perhaps this is the last voyage of the Male Schooner as well. Somehow the Iron Pigs lost this game despite striking out 17 Pawtucket batters, including 5 by MAG who could add to an already good Phillies bullpen very soon. Maikel Franco was lifted from the game and according to manager Brundage was a "Coach's decision...I'm going to keep that between he and I" (thanks Chuck Hixson for the quote via the twitter). Not sure what this means. Perhaps he wasn't running out groundballs or playing the game the right way. Cam Perkins ending the season on a mini-streak, has hits in his last 5 games (including two 3-hit games).

Reading 3, Portland 1

Hoby Milner - 6 IP, 7 H, 1 R, 1 ER, 5 BB, 2 K, 3 GB, 4 FB
Kyle Simon - 3 IP, 3 H, 0 R, K
Carlos Alonso - 2 for 4, 2 RBI, BB
Peter Lavin - 0 for 4
Aaron Altherr - 0 for 3, R, BB, K, SB
KC Serna - 2 for 4, R, 2B, K

Despite getting outhit 10-5, the Fightin's would come back down from 1-0 to win the game. Two bases loaded walks in the 7th would be the eventual difference makers. I think MattWinks said it best on Twitter yesterday, Hoby Milner has some of the most unsustainable lines. His peripherals should make him a 10+ loss pitcher, not a 10-win pitcher with a 4.21 ERA. Altherr picks up his 12th steal by actually taking a walk. He has 14 HR and 13 steals on the season, but a woeful .236/.291/.403 slash (462 at bats). It is a far cry from his 2013 breakout season.

Tampa 8, Clearwater 2

Colin Kleven - 5.1 IP, 8 H, 7 R, 7 ER, 4 BB, 7 K, 2 HR, 7 GB, 1 FB
Perci Garner - 1.2 IP, 1 H, 1 R, 0 ER, 2 BB, 2 K
Jeb Stefan - 2 IP, 2 H, 0 R, K
Roman Quinn - 0 for 5, K
Jesmuel Valentin - 0 for 1
JP Crawford - 1 for 4, R, 2B, K
Art Charles - 1 for 4, RBI, K
Brian Pointer - 1 for 4, R, K
Harold Martinez - 1 for 3, BB
Herlis Rodriguez - 2 for 4, 2B, RBI

Probably not how Kleven would like to close out the season. That is two very sub-par starts in a row, who had actually been doing well for most of July/August. Roman Quinn goes hitless and Valentin left the game after the first inning. I would guess that this one is injury related. Only multi-hit game coming from Herlis. The 20 year old from Venezuela has a 4 game hitting streak in which he has gone 8 for 15 with two doubles. It's good to see him taking advantage of the playing time.

Lakewood 3, Hickory 0

Yoel Mecias - 6 IP, 4 H, 0 R, BB, 7 K, 6 GB, 2 FB
Delvi Francisco - 2 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 3 K
Joey Denato - 1 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 2 K
Malquin Canelo - 0 for 3, R, BB, 2 K, SB
Andrew Pullin - 2 for 4, R, 3B, RBI, CS
Andrew Knapp - 1 for 3, R, 2B, BB
Dylan Cozens - 1 for 4, 2B, K
Willians Astudillo - 3 for 4, RBI
Aaron Brown - 1 for 4, 2 K
Mitch Walding - 1 for 4, K
Carlos Tocci - 0 for 3, 2 K

Yoel Mecias got his groove back in his last start of the season. Not only was he able to go a season high 6 innings, but he matched his highest strikeout total while only walking 1. The offense provided enough offense late in the game to get Mecias the win. "Teddy" Willians has himself yet another multi-hit game giving him a .340/.374/.444 slash on the year. If I'm not mistaken, that is the 2nd highest average in all full-season ball, only behind Jordy Lara of the Mariners.

State College 1, Williamsport 0

Ricardo Pinto - 7 IP, 3 H, 1 R, 1 ER, 3 BB, 9 HR, HR, 7 GB, 3 FB
Edubray Ramos - 1 IP, 0 H, 0 R, BB, 2 K
Cord Sandberg - 0 for 4, 2 K
Jiandido Tromp - 1 for 4, 2 K
Derek Campbell - 1 for 4, 2 K
Rhys Hoskins - 0 for 3, 2 K
Jose Pujols - 1 for 3, K
Jan Hernandez - 0 for 3, 2 K

Poor Ricardo Pinto. A lone mistake, a solo HR in the 5th, accounted for the only runs scored in the game. It was Pinto's 5th loss of the season. He holds a 2.11 ERA in 47 innings pitched. His last two starts (both losses) he has gone 12 innings of 9 hit, 2 run, 3 walk ball with 18 strikeouts. The Williamsport offense is putrid and doesn't bode well for Lakewood next season. Perhaps some of these guys will repeat short-season ball. In other news, the opposing starting pitcher's name was Daniel Poncedeleon. That is one of the coolest last names ever. Juan Ponce De Leon was a 16th century explorer often associated with his attempts to find the fountain of youth. It makes perfect sense why the Phillies didn't draft this guy.

GCL Phillies 5, GCL Pirates 3

Franklyn Kilome - 5 IP, 5 H, 1 R, 1 ER, 2 BB, 5 K, HR, 4 GB, 0 FB, WP
Venn Biter - 0 for 3, K
Grenny Cumana - 1 for 4, 3B, K
Tim Zier - 2 for 4, 2 R, 2B
Jesus Posso - 2 for 3, R, RBI, BB, K
Gustavo Martinez - 2 for 4, R, 2B, 2 RBI
Trey Williams - 1 for 4, 2 K
William Cucias - 1 for 3, R, 2B, 2 RBI

Sadly, the 3 game winning streak to end the season wasn't enough to push for the division lead. They fell 1.5 games behind GCL Yankees1. That means no Phillies minor league affiliate (stateside) will be making the playoffs this season.
