Phillies Minor League Roundup - August 29 - September 1, 2014

This is the final roundup of the minor league regular season. Expect a wrap up of each team, top farm players and the Arizona Fall League the next couple months.

Lehigh Valley 6, Scranton/WB 5 (August 29, 2014)

Jason Marquis - 6 IP, 8 H, 5 R, 5 ER, BB, 5 K, 2 HR, 6 GB, 5 FB
Mike Adams - 1 IP, 0 H, 0 R
Luis Garcia - 2 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 2 BB, 2 K
Cesar Hernandez - 2 for 4, R, 2 K
Maikel Franco - 1 for 4 , R
Cam Perkins - 2 for 4, HR
Sebastian Valle - 1 for 4

An unceremonious end to the season and hopefully Phillies career for Marquis. He was not among the group called up when rosters expanded for September. Included though are Rupp, Adams, Gwynn Jr., MAG, Hernandez, Franco and Garcia. Cam Perkins hits his 2nd HR with Lehigh Valley and his 5th overall this season.

Lehigh Valley 3, Scranton/WB 2 (August 30, 2014)

Brad Lincoln - 7 IP, 6 H, 2 R, 2 ER, 2 BB, 7 K, HR, 8 GB, 3 FB, WP
Ethan Martin - 2 IP, 0 H, 0 R, BB, 5 K
Miguel Alfredo Gonzalez - 1 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 2 BB, 2 K
Tyler Knigge - 1 IP, 0 H, 0 R
Cesar Hernandez - 1 for 4, BB
Maikel Franco - 0 for 5
Cam Perkins - 1 for 4, RBI, K

Two more jilted "prospects" who didn't get the call in Lincoln and Martin. What does this say about them both? Lincoln it doesn't really mean much, but I'm a bit surprised Martin didn't go over Luis Garcia. Garcia has been amazing this season, but it doesn't seem like the Phillies really see much of a future with him given they've waited until now to call him up (albeit after a brief appearance earlier this season).

Scranton/WB 2, Lehigh Valley 1 (August 31, 2014)

Sean O'Sullivan - 7 IP, 5 H, 1 R, 1 ER, 6 K, HR, 2 GB, 9 FB
Hector Neris - 1.1 IP, 2 H, 1 R, 1 ER, BB, 4 K
Cesar Hernandez - 0 for 4
Maikel Franco - 1 for 3, BB, SB
Cam Perkins - 2 for 4, 2B, K
Cameron Rupp - 1 for 3, K (passed ball)
Tyler Henson - 1 for 3, HR, K

Sean O'Sullivan left with a tie game. After a scoreless 8th, Neris came back in for the 9th and gave up the walk-off double. Franco steals his 3rd base of the season (shame on those 3 catchers). Perkins continues his late season redemption after a woeful Lehigh Valley campaign. Tyler Henson hits his 9th homer and has himself a pretty decent 2014 season for a journeyman utility player.

Scranton/WB 4, Lehigh Valley 1 (September 1, 2014, 7 innings)

Mike Adams - 1 IP, 1 H, 0 R
Greg Smith - 4.1 IP, 9 H, 4 R, 4 ER, 3 K, 2 HR
Jeremy Horst - 0.2 IP, 0 H, 0 R
Cesar Hernandez - 2 for 3, 2B, BB, CS
Maikel Franco - 1 for 3, 2B (fielding error)
Cam Perkins - 0 for 3, K
Cameron Rupp - 1 for 3, R, 2B

Probably only fitting that Greg Smith got the final loss of the regular season for the Iron Pigs. It was his 11th this season to the tune of a 4.40 ERA. Franco collects his final double of the season, his 33rd.

Reading 3, Trenton 0 (August 29, 2014)

Aaron Nola - 5 IP, 4 H, 0 R, 2 K, 6 GB, 3 FB
Austin Wright - 1.1 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 3 BB, 2 K
Colton Murray - 1.2 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 2 BB, 2 K
Carlos Alonso - 3 for 5, R, 2 2B, 2 RBI
Peter Lavin - 2 for 4, RBI
Aaron Altherr - 1 for 4, 2 K
KC Serna - 1 for 3, 2 K
Zach Collier - 1 for 3, 2 R, 2B, BB, K

So, who wants to bet against Aaron Nola in a Phillies uniform for that 3rd or 4th game to begin the season? He outduels top Yankee pitching prospect Luis Severino. In his final 3 starts Nola has given up only 3 earned runs in 15 innings (3 walks and 9 strikeouts).

Reading 7, Trenton 1 (August 30, 2014)

Severino Gonzalez - 6 IP, 3 H, 1 R, 1 ER, BB, 3 K, 12 GB, 3 FB, WP
Mike Nesseth - 2 IP, 2 H, 0 R
Nefi Ogando - 1 IP, 1 H, 0 R, K
Carlos Alonso - 2 for 4, 2 R, BB, picked off
Peter Lavin - 1 for 3, R, 2B, BB, K
Jake Fox - 2 for 4, R, 2 RBI, BB, K
Aaron Altherr - 1 for 3, R, 2B, BB
Zach Collier - 0 for 4, R, RBI, BB, K

Severino pitched brilliantly and in his last 5 starts (32 IP) and only gave up 24 hits and 9 earned runs, while only walking 9 and striking out 22. He's had his ups and downs this season, but I would factor him into a starting spot with the Iron Pigs next season. Reading manufactures 7 walks in this game, which has to be close to a season high.

Reading 4, Trenton 2 (August 31, 2014)

Ryan O'Sullivan - 5.2 IP, 5 H, 2 R, 2 ER, 4 BB, 4 K, 8 GB, 4 FB
Kyle Simon - 2.2 IP, 3 H, 0 R, K
Carlos Alonso - 1 for 5, RBI, K
Peter Lavin - 1 for 4, R (outfield assist, home)
Aaron Altherr - 1 for 4
Zach Collier - 2 for 4, 3B, 2 RBI, K
KC Serna - 0 for 4, 2 K
Logan Moore - 2 for 4, R, 2B, K

Ryan O'Sullivan finishes out his season with his 7th win and almost with another quality start. Peter Lavin throws out his 21st baserunner. That is just outstanding.

Reading 7, Trenton 3 (September 1, 2014)

Adam Loewen - 5 IP, 9 H, 3 R, 3 ER, 4 BB, 6 K, 3 GB, 3 FB
Mike Nesseth - 1 IP, 2 H, 0 R
Austin Wright - 1.1 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 3 BB
Colton Murray - 1.2 IP, 0 H, 0 R
KC Serna - 1 for 5, 2 R, 3B
Peter Lavin - 3 for 4, R, 2 RBI, BB
Aaron Altherr - 1 for 4, K
Zach Collier - 1 for 4, R, K

Colton Murray will soon be able to further prove himself in the AFL as he picks up his 6th save with Reading to end the regular season. Peter Lavin has likely firmly cemented himself as an OF option with Lehigh next season. Yes, he is 26, but that doesn't mean he won't be able to help the big league team in some way down the line.

Clearwater 6, Lakeland 3 (August 29, 2014, 8 innings)

Kevin Walter - 4.2 IP, 7 H, 3 R, 3 ER, 2 BB, 3 K, 5 GB, 4 FB, WP
Aaron Baker - 2.2 IP, 3 H, 0 R, 2 K
Roman Quinn - 1 for 2, HR, 2 BB, SB
Jesmuel Valentin - 0 for 5, K
JP Crawford - 0 for 4, R, BB, 2 K
Art Charles - 1 for 3, R, RBI, BB, K
Brian Pointer - 1 for 3, R, RBI, BB, 2 SB
Chris Serritella - 1 for 3, HR, 2 RBI, BB
Gabriel Lino - 0 for 4, 2 K
Herlis Rodriguez - 2 for 4, R

Walter's 3rd and last start weren't nearly as good as the first two. Baker came on in relief to earn the "W". Roman Quinn blasts his 7th homer and steals his 31st base. Brian Pointer also adds his 15th and 16th stolen bases.

Clearwater 5, Lakeland 3 (August 30, 2014)

Miguel Nunez - 6 IP, 8 H, 3 R, 2 ER, 7 K, 3 GB, 4 FB
Cody Forsythe - 2 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 4 K
Lee Ridenhour - 1 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 2 K
Roman Quinn - 2 for 2, R, RBI, 2 BB, CS
Jesmuel Valentin - 1 for 4, R, 2B
JP Crawford - 2 for 4, RBI, K, CS
Brian Pointer - 0 for 3, R, BB, K
Art Charles - 0 for 4, 3 K (fielding error)
Harold Martinez - 2 for 3, 2B, 2 RBI, BB, K, CS, picked off
Gabriel Lino - 0 for 4, K (fielding error, passed ball)

Big day for Thresher pitchers as they strike out 13 and walk none. Roman and JP both with multi-hit games, but are also caught stealing.

Clearwater 3, Lakeland 1 (August 31, 2014)

Mark Leiter - 7 IP, 4 H, 1 R, 1 ER, BB, 7 K, 7 GB, 5 FB
Ethan Stewart - 1 IP, 1 H, 0 R, K
Ulises Joaquin - 1 IP, 1 H, 0 R
Roman Quinn - 1 for 2, R, BB, SB, HBP
Herlis Rodriguez - 2 for 4, RBI, CS
JP Crawford - 1 for 4, SB, CS
Brian Pointer - 0 for 4, 3 K
Harold Martinez - 1 for 3

Mark Leiter goes out in style and marks 4 straight quality starts, with this probably being his best effort. He might not amount to much, but there is likely still a #5 starter or long-reliever outlook for Leiter. Quinn steals his 32nd and JP Crawford adds his 10th (and his 7th caught stealing). Not a great SB/CS ratio to end the season (38-20 across two levels). Certainly one of the things JP must work on next season.

Hagerstown 10, Lakewood 4 (August 29, 2014)

Yacksel Rios - 1.2 IP, 8 H, 7 R, 5 ER, BB, 2 K, 2 HR, WP
Will Morris - 4 IP, 2 H, 0 R, 6 K, 2 WP
Frank Rivas - 2.1 IP, 3 H, 3 R, 3 ER, 2 K, 2 WP
Carlos Tocci - 0 for 3, 2 BB
Andrew Pullin - 0 for 5, RBI, K (missed catch error)
Andrew Knapp - 1 for 4, R, 2B, BB, K
Dylan Cozens - 1 for 4, R, RBI, BB, K, SB
Zach Green - 1 for 3, BB, K
Aaron Brown - 1 for 4, RBI, 3 K, picked off
Willians Astudillo - 0 for 4
Mitch Walding - 1 for 4, R
Drew Stankiewicz - 1 for 3, R, BB, K

Yacksel will try and forget this start over the offseason. Even with this start, he ends the season with 3.69 ERA. It was a somewhat successful campaign for Rios, who will need to learn to keep his walks down going further. Cozens adds his 22nd stolen base.

Lakewood 7, Hagerstown 4 (August 30, 2014)

Ranfi Casimiro - 5 IP, 4 H, 2 R, 2 ER, 3 BB, 8 K, 3 GB, 1 FB
Jesen Therrien - 3 IP, 2 H, 2 R, 2 ER, BB, K, HR
Joey Denato - 1 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 2 K
Malquin Canelo - 2 for 4, 2 R, K
Andrew Pullin - 3 for 5, 2 R, 2B, HR, 4 RBI
Andrew Knapp - 1 for 5, HR, 2 RBI, 2 K
Dylan Cozens - 0 for 4, BB, 3 K, SB
Zach Green - 2 for 5, 2 2B, RBI
Mitch Walding - 0 for 3, 2 K
Larry Greene - 0 for 4
Jose Mayorga - 1 for 2, 2 BB
Carlos Tocci - 1 for 4, R, K

I'm not exactly sure if Casimiro remains in the rotation beyond this season and will be something to see next season. Pullin blasts his 9th HR, while Knapp hits his 5th. Cozens steals yet another base (23rd) while striking out 3 times.

Hagerstown 5, Lakewood 2 (August 31, 2014)

Matt Imhof - 1 IP, 2 H, 1 R, 1 ER, BB, HR
Julio Reyes - 4 IP, 3 H, 1 R, 1 ER, 2 BB, K, 2 WP
Delvi Francisco - 3 IP, 2 H, 3 R, 2 ER, 3 BB, K, WP
Malquin Canelo - 1 for 4, RBI, K
Andrew Pullin - 1 for 2
Andrew Knapp - 1 for 4
Dylan Cozens - 1 for 4, 2 K (fielding error)
Willians Astudillo - 1 for 4
Zach Green - 2 for 4, 2B, K
Aaron Brown - 0 for 4
Mitch Walding - 2 for 3, R, 2B, CS
Carlos Tocci - 0 for 1, R, HBP, SB

Matt Imhof doesn't last past the 1st inning and I'm not sure why as of yet. The offense outhits Hagerstown 9-7, but failed to capitalize. Tocci picks up his 10th stolen base.

Lakewood 9, Hagerstown 8 (September 1, 2014)

Jon Prosinski - 4 IP, 8 H, 5 R, 5 ER, BB, HR, 6 GB, 3 FB
Frank Rivas - 2 IP, 4 H, 2 R, 1 ER, 2 K, HR (pickoff error)
Joey Denato - 2 IP, 2 H, 1 R, 1 ER, K, HR
Jesen Therrien - 1 IP, 0 H, 0 R
Malquin Canelo - 2 for 5, R, 2B, 2 RBI, K
Willians Astudillo - 0 for 5
Mitch Walding - 1 for 3, 2 R, 2B, 2 BB (fielding error)
Dylan Cozens - 2 for 5, R, 2 3B, 2 RBI, K
Zach Green - 2 for 5, HR, 3 RBI, K
Aaron Brown - 1 for 4, HR, K (fielding error)
Jose Mayorga - 1 for 4, K
Larry Greene - 3 for 4, 2 R, HR, SB
Drew Stankiewicz - 1 for 4, R, 3 K

Prosinski was not very good on the last game of the season, but it didn't matter because his offense combined for 13 hits and 2 walks. Larry Greene hits his 2nd HR of the season and steals his 4th base. Of course this would happen on the last game of the season and on a day when most people take the day off. Zach Green adds his 6th homer and Brown hits his first full-season homer. Willians Astudillo loses the SAL batting title with an 0-fer final outing.

Jamestown 7, Williamsport 1 (August 29, 2014)

David Whitehead - 6 IP, 4 H, 3 R, 0 ER, 4 K, 12 GB, 3 FB
Scott Harris - 1 IP, 1 H, 0 R, BB
Calvin Rayburn - 1 IP, 3 H, 4 R, 0 ER, K
Richard Bielski - 1 IP, 0 H, 0 R, K
Jiandido Tromp - 1 for 3, HR, BB, SB
Cord Sandberg - 0 for 4, K
Rhys Hoskins - 0 for 3 (fielding error)
Derek Campbell - 0 for 3, 2 K (fielding error)
Jose Pujols - 1 for 3, 2B, K
Deivi Grullon - 1 for 3 (2 passed balls)
Emmanuel Marrero - 0 for 3, K (throwing error)

Go figure the only earned run scored was the Crosscutters in a 7-1 loss. That about sums up the 2014 Williamsport season. Tromp hit his 14th HR and stole his 16th base. Poor David Whitehead lowers his ERA despite the loss.

Williamsport 7, Jamestown 6 (August 30, 2014)

Mitch Gueller - 4 IP, 5 H, 3 R, 3 ER, 3 BB, 4 K, 2 GB, 2 FB
Bryan Sova - 1 IP, 4 H, 2 R, 2 ER
Matt Hockenberry - 4 IP, 5 H, 1 R, 1 ER, 4 K, 4 GB, 4 FB
Chase Harris - 1 for 4, 2B, RBI, 2 K (outfield assist, home)
Cord Sandberg - 1 for 4, HR, K
Jiandido Tromp - 1 for 4, RBI, K
Rhys Hoskins - 1 for 3, HR, BB
Derek Campbell - 0 for 4, K
Jose Pujols - 3 for 4, R
Jan Hernandez - 1 for 4, R, 2B, 2 K (throwing error)
Deivi Grullon - 1 for 3, R, 2B, 2 RBI, BB
Emmanuel Marrero - 2 for 4, 2 R, 2B

Matt Hockenberry saves the day, the pride of Temple University.  Cord Sandberg and Hoskins each hit a homer, their 5th and 9th, respectively. Jose Pujols seems to be adjusting well to Williamsport, but hasn't worked a walk yet.

State College 5, Williamsport 1 (August 31, 2014)

Edubray Ramos - 4 IP, 5 H, 0 R, 5 K, 3 GB, 1 FB
Mark Meadors - 2 IP, 3 H, 1 R, 1 ER, 2 K
Scott Harris - 1.1 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 2 K
Cord Sandberg - 2 for 4, HR
Jiandido Tromp - 0 for 4, K (outfield assist, 1B)
Rhys Hoskins - 1 for 3, 2B, BB, 2 K
Jose Pujols - 0 for 4, 2 K
Deivi Grullon - 0 for 4, 3 K (passed ball)
Jan Hernandez - 0 for 3, BB, 3 K, SB
Robinson Torres - 2 for 3
Emmanuel Marrero - 0 for 3, K

Ramos gets his first start of the season and does extremely well. Manny Martinez would be the culprit in the loss. Cord Sandberg with back-to-back games with a HR (his 6th). The offense went a combined 5 for 32 with 2 walks and 13 strikeouts.

State College 6, Williamsport 0 (September 1, 2014)

Feliberto Sanchez - 5 IP, 10 H, 5 R, 4 ER, BB, 2 K, HR, 7 GB, 3 FB
Calvin Rayburn - 1 IP, 0 H, 0 R, K
Derek Campbell - 0 for 4, 2 K
Jiandido Tromp - 1 for 4, K
Rhys Hoskins - 0 for 4, 2 K (throwing error)
Wilmer Oberto - 2 for 4, 2B
Jose Pujols - 0 for 3
Jan Hernandez - 0 for 3, K
Sean McHugh - 2 for 3
Emmanuel Serra - 0 for 2, K

Slight improvement this game for the offense as they go 5 for 31 with a walk and 6 strikeouts. They are pretty steeped in awfulness. There will be a full write-up of the Crosscutter season, as well as all other affiliates in the next few weeks.
