Phillies Minor League Roundup - June 25, 2015

Today's Probables:

LHV: Chad Billingsley
REA: Ben Lively, Jesse Biddle
CLR: Victor Arano
LWD: Ranfi Casimiro
WIL: Franklyn Kilome

Buffalo 7, Lehigh Valley 2

Anthony Vasquez - 3.1 IP, 6 H, 5 R, 5 ER, 5 BB, 2 K, 0 GB, 6 FB
Chris Leroux - 2.2 IP, 3 H, 1 R, 1 ER, K
Seth Rosin - 2 IP, 2 H, 1 R, 1 ER, K, HR
Chase d'Arnaud - 1 for 5, RBI, K (fielding error)
Tyler Henson - 1 for 4, 2 K, SB
Brian Bogusevic - 0 for 3, 2 K, HBP
Russ Canzler - 0 for 2, 2 BB
Aaron Altherr - 2 for 4
Chris McGuiness - 1 for 4, R, K
Jordan Danks - 0 for 4
Cord Phelps - 1 for 4, R, K
Blake Forsythe - 1 for 4, 2B, RBI, 2 K

I'm not sure why I subjected myself to watch this game. Perhaps it was just for the "noise" in the background while working. I made sure to look at my phone for the Altherr at bats, who seems to have no trouble thus far adjusting to AAA pitching. Other than that, the game was incredibly boring. There was little to be interested in when the IronPigs were pitching.

Reading, Akron (ppd due to rain, makeup on 6/25)

Clearwater 8, Dunedin 7 (10 innings)

David Whitehead - 5.1 IP, 8 H, 3 R, 3 ER, 2 BB, 10 GB, 5 FB
Harold Guerrero - 1 IP, 0 H, 2 R, 2 ER, 4 BB
Jesen Therrien - 2.2 IP, 5 H, 2 R, 2 ER, BB, 4 K, WP
Miguel Nunez - 1 IP, 0 H, 0 R, BB, K
Malquin Canelo - 2 for 6, HR, 2 RBI
Carlos Tocci - 1 for 5, 2 R, BB, K
Aaron Brown - 1 for 4, R, RBI, 2 BB, K
Rhys Hoskins - 1 for 4, 2 R, 2 BB, 2 K
Chace Numata - 1 for 4, 2B, 2 RBI
Willians Astudillo - 1 for 5, 2B, RBI
Mitch Walding - 0 for 2, 3 BB, 2 K
Chase Harris - 2 for 5, 2 R, SB (fielding error)

David Whitehead's struggles continue, though his impressive groundballs numbers remain. Chace Numata's RBI in the top of the 9th tied the game at 7 to send it into extras. Aaron Brown's RBI single in the top of the 10th would seal the victory. Brown has had a knack for the dramatic this season. This is the 3rd game-winning RBI hit this month for him, if I'm recalling correctly. Canelo wasted no time in getting acclimated to high-A ball, mashing his 1st homer with the Threshers. Add in an injured Cozens, the Clearwater offense is one of the most dynamic and scary in all of A-ball.

Hickory 8, Lakewood 7

Tyler Viza - 4.1 IP, 8 H, 5 R, 5 ER, 3 BB, 2 K, HR, 8 GB, 2 FB
Calvin Rayburn - 2.2 IP, 2 H, 0 R
Joey Denato - 1 IP, 3 H, 2 R, 2 ER, 2 K
Matt Hockenberry - 0.1 IP, 2 H, 1 R, 1 ER
Drew Stankiewicz - 0 for 3, R, 2 BB
Scott Kingery - 2 for 5, 2 R, 3B, K
Herlis Rodriguez - 2 for 4, 2 R, HR, 3 RBI
Damek Tomscha - 3 for 4, HR, 2 RBI
Cord Sandberg - 3 for 4, 2B
Kyle Martin - 1 for 4, RBI
Deivi Grullon - 0 for 4, K
Derek Campbell - 0 for 3, 2 K, HBP, picked off (throwing error)
Gustavo Martinez - 2 for 4, R, SB, CS (outfield assist, 2B)

Tyler Viza has been quite awful his last two starts, giving up 13 hits, 11 earned runs and walking 8 in the last 7.2 innings. Hockenberry however was the goat in this one, giving up the walkoff in the bottom of the 9th. Phillies 2015 2nd round pick, Scott Kingery, made his pro debut. All he did was mash a triple and have a two-hit night. Not to be outdone, Herlis Rodriguez continued his assault on opposing pitching by launching his 6th HR of the season. Rodriguez is slashing .313/.346/.495 on the season with 10 SB as well.

Williamsport 6, Batavia 3

Alejandro Arteaga - 7 IP, 4 H, 1 R, 0 ER, BB, 5 K, 7 GB, 5 FB
Andrew Godail - 1 IP, 0 H, 0 R, K
Kenneth Koplove - 0.1 IP, 3 H, 2 R, 2 ER, BB, K
Robert Tasin - 0.2 IP, 0 H, 0 R, K
Andrew Amaro - 0 for 2, R, 2 BB, SB
Venn Biter - 3 for 4, 3 R, RBI, SB
Jose Pujols - 2 for 3, R, RBI, K, SB (fielding error)
Brendon Hayden - 1 for 4
Jan Hernandez - 1 for 4, RBI, 2 K
Gregori Rivero - 1 for 4, K
Carlos Duran - 0 for 3, BB, CS
Dylan Bosheers - 1 for 3, 2 K
Grenny Cumana - 0 for 3, R, BB

Arteaga has been quite a different pitcher in the early going, but he is also getting a little too old for the league. After the disaster that was 2014, he could be turning the page. Andrew Amaro has a .500 OBP through his first 3 games without having a hit. Impressive! (not really). Venn Biter and Jose Pujols continue to hit at a ridiculous pace to begin the season. Both are hitting .500. Williamsport remains undefeated at 7-0.

GCL Phillies 2, GCL Pirates 0 (Game 1 of doubleheader, 7 innings)

Felix Paulino - 5 IP, 3 H, 0 R, 3 K, 6 GB, 4 FB
Ismael Cabrera - 1 IP, 0 H, 0 R
Sutter McLoughlin - 1 IP, 1 H, 0 R, K
Juan Luis - 0 for 3
Arquimedes Gamboa - 0 for 3, K
Jonathan Arauz - 0 for 3, K
Luis Encarnacion - 0 for 3, K
Greg Pickett - 1 for 3, R, 2B, K
Luis Espiritu - 0 for 3, K
Yunior Reyes - 1 for 2, R, 2B, RBI, K
Scott Tommasetti - 1 for 2, RBI, K
Gregory Brozdinski - 0 for 2

GCL Phillies 7, GCL Pirates 3 (Game 2 of doubleheader, 7 innings, makeup of 6/24 ppd)

Adonis Medina - 2 IP, 3 H, 2 R, 1 ER, BB, 2 K, WP
Edgar Garcia - 3 IP, 1 H, 0 R, BB, 2 K
Zach Morris - 1.2 IP, 2 H, 1 R, 1 ER, BB, 2 K, WP
Kevin Walsh - 0.1 IP, 0 H, 0 R, BB
Jesus Alastre - 1 for 3, R, 2B, RBI, SB, HBP
Arquimedes Gamboa - 0 for 3, 2 K, HBP
Cornelius Randolph - 3 for 3, R, 3B, RBI, BB, picked off
Luis Encarnacion - 1 for 4, HR, 2 RBI, K (pickoff error)
Bryan Martelo - 2 for 3, R, BB
Luis Espiritu - 0 for 3, BB
Henry Santana - 0 for 3, K
Jose Antequera - 1 for 2, R, 3B, RBI, BB, SB
Rodolfo Duran - 0 for 3, R, K

Hey, that Randolph kid might be good! Gamboa is 0 for 11 with 7 strikeouts in his first 3 games. Encarnacion hit his 2nd homer in 3 games this season.
