Today's Probables:
LHV: TBD
REA: Ben Lively
CLR: Victor Arano
LWD: Tyler Viza
WIL: Denton Keys
Lehigh Valley 12, Scranton/WB 8
Anthony Vasquez - 5 IP, 8 H, 7 R, 7 ER, 3 BB, 2 K, HBP, 2 HR, 6 GB, 4 FB
Hector Neris - 2 IP, 2 H, 1 R, 1 ER, 2 BB, 2 K
Adam Loewen - 2 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 4 K
Tyler Henson - 3 for 5, 2 R, 2B, HR, 4 RBI, SB
Brian Bogusevic - 2 for 4, 2 R, BB
Aaron Altherr - 3 for 5, R, 2 RBI, K, SB
Jordan Danks - 1 for 3, R, BB, K
Gabriel Lino - 2 for 4, R, 2 2B, 2 RBI
The IronPig offense nailed the RailRiders for 17 hits in a pretty wild game. At one point Scranton had a comfortable 7-1 lead. Tyler Henson continued his hot streak, swatting his 1st HR of the season and adding his 17th stolen base. Aaron Altherr keeps chugging along, raising his average to .367 in 30 AAA at bats and stealing his 2nd base. Brian Bogusevic-watch is on today as he can opt out of his contract. I think there is a very good chance he does, given his stellar season with Lehigh Valley.
Reading 6, New Britain 1
Colin Kleven - 6 IP, 3 H, 1 R, 1 ER, 4 K, WP, 6 GB, 5 FB
Tom Windle - 1 IP, 1 H, 0 R, BB, K
Reinier Roibal - 1 IP, 1 H, 0 R, K
Stephen Shackleford - 1 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 2 K
J.P. Crawford - 0 for 5, K
KC Serna - 1 for 4, 2 R, 2B, BB
Kelly Dugan - 3 for 5, R, RBI
Brock Stassi - 2 for 3, 2 R, 2 BB
Andrew Knapp - 2 for 5, R, 2B, 2 RBI, 2 K
Colin Kleven was dominant in his first AA start. The 24 year old righty made easy work of High-A ball this season and most definitely deserved the callup. We know they needed a starter, but it looks like he might be in the rotation for good. Tom Windle, who has struggled mightily in 2015, makes a bullpen appearance. It could likely be his permanent home for the time being. Crawford's mini-slump continues and is batting .189/.348/.324 in his last 10 games (.194 BABIP). Andrew Knapp with his 1st XBH in AA.
Clearwater 12, Charlotte 2
David Whitehead - 7 IP, 3 H, 0 R, BB, 2 K, 10 GB, 4 FB
Cody Forsythe - 2 IP, 2 H, 2 R, 2 ER, 2 K, HR
Malquin Canelo - 2 for 4, R, RBI, K
Carlos Tocci - 0 for 4, R, K, HBP
Andrew Pullin - 2 for 5, 2 R, HR, 5 RBI
Rhys Hoskins - 2 for 4, R, 2B, BB
Chace Numata - 1 for 4, R, RBI
Aaron Brown - 1 for 5, R, RBI, 2 K (outfield assist, 2B)
David Whitehead's up and down season continues with an UP! He goes for a season-high 7 innings and allows his 2nd fewest hit total this season. The Thresher offense exploded for 11 runs in the 6th inning. Contributing to that was an Andrew Pullin grandslam, his 7th HR of the season. While Tocci and Canelo have slowed down reaching Clearwater, Rhys Hoskins is still in 4th gear. He's batting .318/.464/.818 with 3 HR in 22 at bats. SSS for sure, but he is clearly working himself into Top 15 prospect status in the organization with his combination of patience and power at the plate. He's a pretty decent defender at 1B to boot.
Delmarva 4, Lakewood 3
Josh Taylor - 4.1 IP, 5 H, 2 R, 2 ER, 4 BB, 4 K, 2 WP 4 GB, 2 FB
Scott Harris - 1.2 IP, 2 H, 2 R, 1 ER, HR
Alexis Rivero - 2 IP, 0 H, 0 R, BB
Drew Stankiewicz - 1 for 4, 2B
Emmanuel Marrero - 0 for 4, 2 K
Kyle Martin - 3 for 4, 2 R, 2 2B
Damek Tomscha - 3 for 4, R, 2 2B, HR, 3 RBI, K
Cord Sandberg - 1 for 4, CS
Jiandido Tromp - 1 for 4, K
Derek Campbell - 0 for 4, K (throwing error)
Joel Fisher - 1 for 4, 3 K
Gustavo Martinez - 0 for 3, CS
Josh Taylor run of success ran out last night, walking a season-high 4 batters and going a near season-low of 4.1 innings. The loss actually fell to Scott Harris, his 2nd of the season. The offense actually outhit Delmarva 10-7, but were only 2 for 9 with RISP. Didn't I mention that Tomscha has been quite good lately and might be (for better or worse) or newest top 3B prospect? He had 3 XBH hits yesterday, including HR number 4 and doubles 18/19. Kyle Martin, 2015 4th round pick, has been very good as well since being placed in Lakewood to begin his professional career. He is hitting .360 in 25 at bats.
Mahoning Valley 2, Williamsport 1
Luis Morales - 5 IP, 6 H, 2 R, 2 ER, BB, 2 K, 4 GB, 3 FB
Tyler Gilbert - 1.2 IP, 2 H, 0 R, 2 BB, 2 K
Andrew Godail - 1.1 IP, 2 H, 0 H, BB, K
Mark Laird - 1 for 4
Venn Biter - 1 for 4
Jose Pujols - 0 for 4
Brendon Hayden - 0 for 4, K
Jan Hernandez - 0 for 3, BB
Joshua Tobais - 0 for 3, BB, K, SB
Carlos Duran - 0 for 3, K
Gregori Rivero - 2 for 3, R, 2 2B, K
Grenny Cumana - 0 for 3 (fielding error)
Luis Morales pitched well enough in his 2nd start of the season. His 1st start he had only gone 3 innings and walked 5 batters. Unfortunately, Mahoning Valley completely shutdown the Crosscutter offense. This was Williamsport's 1st loss of the season as they fall to 10-1.
GCL Phillies 2, GCL Astros 1 (Game 1 of doubleheader, 7 innings, makeup of 6/29 ppd)
Shane Watson - 1 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 2 BB, K
Adonis Medina - 3 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 2 BB, 4 K
Horace Stubblefield - 2 IP, 0 H, 0 R, BB, 5 K
Carlos Indriago - 2 IP, 5 H, 1 R, 1 ER
Sutter McLoughlin - 1 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 3 K
Juan Luis - 1 for 4, R, K, 2 SB
Jonathan Arauz - 0 for 4, K
Corneilius Randolph - 0 for 4, 2 K
Luis Encarnacion - 3 for 4, HR, 2 RBI
Bryan Martelo - 1 for 4 (outfield assist, home)
Luis Espiritu - 0 for 4
Jesus Alastre - 0 for 3
Arquimedes Gamboa - 1 for 3
Edgar Cabral - 1 for 3, K
Shane Watson pitched! Shane Watson PITCHED! After a number of setbacks with his shoulder, Shane Watson returns to action. Granted, it was only an inning, but it was something. Look for him to build his strength back up and eventually wind up in Lakewood by the season's end. The rest of the pitching was stellar, including a velocity jump guy in Adonis Medina. 2015 picks Stubblefield and McLoughlin also fared extremely well. The offense didn't do much outside of Luis Encarnacion who hit his 3rd HR of the season and is batting .316 in 19 at bats thus far.
GCL Phillies 1, GCL Astros 0 (Game 2 of doubleheader, 8 innings)
Sam McWilliams - 6 IP, 2 H, 0 R, 5 K, 7 GB, 2 FB
Ismael Cabrera - 2 IP, 2 H, 0 R, 2 K, WP
Jesus Alastre - 2 for 3, K
Arquimedes Gamboa - 0 for 3, BB
Corneilius Randolph - 1 for 4, RBI
Yunios Reyes - 0 for 3, K
Greg Pickett - 2 for 3
Luis Espiritu - 0 for 2, BB
Henry Santana - 0 for 3, 2 K
Jose Antequera - 1 for 3, R, 2B
Rodolfo Duran - 0 for 2, K, HBP
Perhaps just as exciting as Shane Watson returning was the spectacular 2015 debut of Sam McWilliams. The 19 year old 6'7 righty was exceptionally good and is one to keep an eye on as his season progresses. Randolph provided the late game heroics with the walk-off single in the bottom of the 8th to win the game. Greg Pickett is 5 for 10 to begin the season. The win moved the GCL Phils to 6-1.
