Phillies Minor League Roundup - July 1, 2015

Today's Probables:

LVH: David Buchanan
REA: Jesse Biddle
LWD: Ricardo Pinto
WIL: Ranfi Casimiro

Lehigh Valley 3, Scranton/WB 2 (10 innings)

Dustin McGowan - 4 IP, 4 H, 2 R, 2 ER, 2 BB, K, 4 GB, 5 FB
Seth Rosin - 2 IP, 3 H, 0 R, BB
Cesar Jimenez - 3 IP, 3 H, 0 R, 2 BB, 4 K
Juan Guitierrez - 1 IP, 1 H, 0 R, BB, K
Tyler Henson - 2 for 5, R, 3B, K (outfield assist, 2B)
Brian Bogusevic - 1 for 5, 2 K
Russ Canzler - 2 for 5, 2B, RBI, K
Aaron Altherr - 1 for 3, R, BB, 2 K
Cord Phelps - 2 for 3, R, 3B, RBI, BB (missed catch error)

Dustin McGowan made his first minor league start since 2011 last night, though not well enough for the win. The walkoff win came courtesy of Russ Canzler who lined a single to CF to score Tyler Henson, who had led off the winning with a triple. Brian Bogusevic decides not to opt out of his minor league contract with the Phillies. When do we begin to determine the proper sample size for Altherr to be called up? 75...100...150 at bats?

Reading 3, New Britain 1

Ben Lively - 5 IP, 6 H, 1 R, 1 ER, 2 BB, 2 K, 7 GB, 4 FB, HBP
Ryan O'Sullivan - 2 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 2 K
Reinier Roibal - 1 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 2 K
Stephen Shackleford - 1 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 2 K
J.P. Crawford - 1 for 4, BB, CS (fielding error)
KC Serna - 1 for 5, R, 2B
Kelly Dugan - 3 for 5, R
Brock Stassi - 2 for 3, R, 2B, RBI, 2 BB, K
Andrew Knapp - 1 for 5, 2 RBI
Brian Pointer - 0 for 3, BB, K (outfield assist, home)

Ben Lively is curiously held to 74 pitches in only 5 innings. He pitched well enough, but his strikeout totals have dipped a bit recently. Perhaps they are limiting his innings. The bullpen was stellar in his stead. J.P. Crawford has a bit of a rough day. The errors are always a misleading stat, but despite his speed has never been a great stealer. One of the few areas in his game that could be improved. Kelly Dugan has very little to prove in AA. Despite the lack of power, he has very little challenge in driving pitches for hits. In 63 AA at-bats, he is OPSing .933. #FreeDugan

Clearwater 5, Tampa 1

Victor Arano - 6 IP, 4 H, 1 R, 1 ER, 4 K, 6 GB, 3 FB
Miguel Nunez - 2 IP, 0 H, 0 R, K
Ulises Joaquin - 1 IP, 0 H, 0 R
Malquin Canelo - 1 for 5, 3 K
Carlos Tocci - 1 for 4, R, K
Andrew Pullin - 1 for 4, 2R, HR, 3 RBI
Rhys Hoskins - 0 for 4, 2 K
Willians Astudillo - 2 for 4, R
Aaron Brown - 2 for 3, RBI, BB, K, CS
Chace Numata - 2 for 4, 2B, RBI
Mitch Walding - 0 for 4, K
Angelo Mora - 2 for 3, 3B, BB

It's taken Arano to get his footing in 2015, but his talent seems to be shining through lately. In his last two starts he has gone 13 innings of 7 hit and 1 run ball with 0 walks and 7 strikeouts. I anticipated a potential breakout for Arano before the season, hopefully it begins now. Andrew Pullin has been on fire as of late, hitting his 8th HR last night. He is certainly a candidate for AA when #FreeDugan gets promoted.

Delmarva 2, Lakewood 0

Tyler Viza - 7 IP, 7 H, 2 R, 2 ER, BB, 7 K, WP, 11 GB, 2 FB
Joey Denato - 0.1 IP, 0 H, 0 R, K
Drew Stankiewicz - 0 for 4, K
Scott Kingery - 0 for 4
Kyle Martin - 0 for 4, K
Damek Tomscha - 2 for 4, 2 K
Cord Sandberg - 0 for 3, K
Jiandido Tromp - 0 for 3
Deivi Grullon - 0 for 3, K
Derek Campbell - 1 for 3, K
Gustavo Martinez - 1 for 3

Tyler Viza nearly went the distance in an unsupported effort thanks to the offense. The hot-hitting Damek Tomscha contributed half of Lakewood's hits last night. The BlueClaws had only 2 runners reach 2nd base all game. The offense has been stagnant after losing Hoskins, Canelo and Tocci. Three of the batters in last night's game had batting averages below .200 (Stankiewicz, Tromp and Grullon). Only Martin and Tomscha have batting averages above .240.

Williamsport 5, Auburn 4 (11 innings)

Denton Keys - 4 IP, 5 H, 3 R, 3 ER, 2 BB, 2 K, HR, WP, 8 GB, 1 FB
Kenneth Koplove - 1 IP, 1 H, 0 R, K
Luke Leftwich - 2.2 IP, 3 H, 1 R, 1 ER, 2 BB, 6 K
Lewis Alezones - 0.1 IP, 0 H, 0 R, BB, K
Jason Zgarowski - 2 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 3 K (throwing error)
Anthony Sequeira - 1 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 2 K
Andrew Amaro - 1 for 3, R, 2 BB, SB
Venn Biter - 0 for 4, R, BB
Joshua Tobias - 1 for 5, 2B, 3 RBI, CS
Brendon Hayden - 1 for 4, R, 2B, BB, K
Jesus Posso - 1 for 5 (throwing error, passed ball)
Carlos Duran - 2 for 4, HR, 2 RBI
William Cuicas - 0 for 4, 2 K (throwing error)
Grenny Cumana - 1 for 4 (2 throwing errors)
Zachary Coppola - 1 for 2, R, 2 BB, 3 SB

Denton Keys wasn't as dominant as his start last week, but continued that high groundball-rate. Williamsport was losing 4-1, but the Crosscutters were able to tie the game up in the bottom of the 8th with a 3-run double from Joshua Tobias. The walk-off in the bottom of the 11th came from Carlos Duran's bat, a no out HR to left field. To everyone's joy, Andrew Amaro had his 1st professional hit last night. Zach Coppola stole his 4th, 5th and 6th bases last night.

GCL Braves 5, GCL Phillies 0

Felix Paulino - 5 IP, 6 H, 4 R, 4 ER, BB, 5 K, HR, 2 WP, HBP, 4 GB, 2 FB
Ethan Stewart - 1 IP, 0 H, 0 R, K
Edgar Garcia - 2 IP, 2 H, 0 R, 2 K
Kevin Walsh - 1 IP, 1 H, 1 R, 1 ER
Juan Luis - 2 for 4, 2B
Jonathan Arauz - 0 for 3, HBP
Cornelius Randolph - 1 for 2, BB, HBP
Luis Encarnacion - 1 for 4, K
Greg Pickett - 0 for 4, 2 K
Bryan Martelo - 0 for 2, 2 BB, K (outfield assist, 2B)
Luis Espiritu - 0 for 3, BB, SB
Jose Antequera - 0 for 4, 2 K
Scott Tomassetti - 0 for 2

Felix Paulino had a bit more trouble yesterday after an easy 2015 debut last week. The big damage was a 2-run HR in the 5th inning. The offense in his defense gave no aid, being held to only 4 hits and going 0 for 9 with RISP. Up until yesterday afternoon, I had completely forgotten Ethan Stewart was still in the organization. He is a 2010 47th round pick that is still around. This is his first appearance since May 9, 2015 with Reading. I don't exactly remember and can't seem to find what has kept him out since now.
