Phillies Minor League Roundup - September 3, 2015

Reinhold Matay-USA TODAY Sports

Weekend Probables:

LHV: Sean O'Sullivan, Anthony Vasquez, Miguel Alfredo Gonzalez
REA: Zach Eflin, Jake Thompson, Ben Lively
CLR: John Richy, TBD, Matt Imhof
LWD: Tyler Viza, Ranfi Casimiro, Austin Davis
WIL: Mitch Gueller, Luke Leftwich, TBD

Syracuse 2, Lehigh Valley 1

David Buchanan - 6 IP, 5 H, 0 R, 2 BB, 7 K, 6 GB, 4 FB
Seth Rosin - 2 IP, 2 H, 2 R, 1 ER, 2 BB
Brian Bogusevic - 1 for 4, K
Tommy Joseph - 1 for 4, K
Kelly Dugan - 1 for 3, HBP
Gabriel Lino - 1 for 4, K
Logan Moore - 0 for 1, K

Oh where has this pitcher been when he's been called up to the big leagues this season? Buchanan struck out a season-high 7 batters last night en route to a sad no-decision. With Rosin pitching, Chase d'Arnaud made a costly fielding error with two on and two outs to allow the go-ahead runner to score in the top of the 9th. Kelly Dugan has a 4 game hitting streak (5 for 14).

Reading 2, Binghampton 1

Ethan Martin - 5 IP, 0 H, 0 R, BB, 5 K, HBP, 10 GB, 1 FB
Ryan O'Sullivan - 2 IP, 1 H, 1 R, 1 ER, 4 K, HR, HBP
Renier Roibal - 1 IP, 0 H, 0 R, BB, K
Stephen Shackleford - 1 IP, 1 H, 0 R
KC Serna - 0 for 3, BB, K
J.P. Crawford - 0 for 3, BB, K (fielding error)
Brock Stassi - 0 for 3, K
Dylan Cozens - 1 for 3, R, SB
Angelo Mora - 0 for 2, R, BB
Harold Martinez - 1 for 3, 2 RBI

Ethan Martin continues to work his voodoo magic against Eastern League hitters. Sure, he hasn't given up an earned run in his last 19.2 IP, but he is also 26 years old who has more innings logged in AAA than he does in AA. I'd love to hear velocity reports if anyone has them. The offense was quiet and combined between both clubs there were only 5 hits all game. Harold Martinez delivered a timely two-RBI single in the bottom of the 7th to put the Fightins up by one. Shackleford would close out the game for his 26th save. The Reading Fightin Phils win their division title in 15 years.

Clearwater 9, Dunedin 8

Ricardo Pinto - 5 IP, 7 H, 5 R, 5 ER, 2 BB, 2 K, 2 HR, HBP, 4 GB, 7 FB
Cody Forsythe - 1 IP, 0 H, 0 R, BB, K
Alexis Rivero - 2 IP, 1 H, 0 R, K
Ulises Joaquin - 1 IP, 3 H, 3 R, 1 ER, BB, 2 K, HR
Jesmuel Valentin - 2 for 6, R, 2B, 2 RBI, K
Carlos Tocci - 2 for 5, 2 R, HR, BB, K
Aaron Brown - 1 for 3, RBI, 2 BB
Rhys Hoskins - 3 for 5, R, 2 RBI
Willians Astudillo - 0 for 5
Chace Numata - 2 for 5, 2 R, RBI
Malquin Canelo - 2 for 4, R, BB, CS, picked off (fielding error)

A very un-Ricardo Pinto game for the 21 year old righty. The last time he had given up 5 runs in a game was July 25.  He has given up more than 3 runs in a start in 6 of his 24 appearances this season. The Threshers held on despite a late surge by Dunedin. Carlos Tocci knocked in his 2nd HR with Clearwater and 4th overall this season. Rhys Hoskins improved his High-A line to .315/.390/.517. That is damn sexy. Willians Astudillo is 0 for his last 11. If anyone has time today, they should see his longest hitless streak and see if it comes anything close to this.

Lakewood 7, Delmarva 5

Will Morris - 7.2 IP, 6 H, 3 R, 3 ER, 5 K, 8 GB, 8 FB
Manny Martinez - 0.1 IP, 2 H, 2 R, 2 ER, HR
Matt Hockenberry - 1 IP, 1 H, 0 R, K
Herlis Rodriguez - 1 for 4, 2B
Drew Stankiewicz - 2 for 5, 2 R
Scott Kingery - 2 for 4, R, 2B, RBI, BB
Deivi Grullon - 3 for 5, R, 2 2B, 2 RBI, 2 K
Damek Tomscha - 2 for 3, R, BB, HBP
Kyle Martin - 2 for 4, HR, 3 RBI, K
Cord Sandberg - 0 for 4, K
Jiandido Tromp - 1 for 4, HR, 2 K

Will Morris moved to 7-0 on the season and lowered his ERA to 1.64 in Lakewood. Across 3 levels this season he has put up a 45:18 K/BB in 88 innings. He is a 22 year old 24th rounder out of the 2013 draft. The offense went wild with 15 hits. Tromp and Martin homered, their 8th and 5th of the season, respectively. Drew Stankiewicz is riding an impressive hot streak, batting .313/.379/.419 in his last 40 games. The 22 year old has mostly a utility infielder ceiling at best.

West Virginia 2, Williamsport 1

Alejandro Arteaga - 5 IP, 7 H, 2 R, 2 ER, 2 BB, 2 K, 7 GB, 5 FB
Ismael Cabrera - 1 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 2 K
Skylar Hunter - 2 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 2 BB, 2 K
Zack Coppola - 0 for 4, 2 K
Venn Biter - 2 for 4
Josh Tobias - 3 for 4, HR, SB
Jesus Posso - 0 for 4
Brendon Hayden - 0 for 4, K
Carlos Duran - 0 for 4, K
Mark Laird - 2 for 3, K
Dylan Bosheers - 0 for 3, K
Luis Espiritu - 0 for 3, 2 K

Alejandro Arteaga gets the hard-luck loss getting only a run of support. That run however came off the bat of Josh Tobias hitting his 4th HR of the season. He is batting .320/.363/.474 in 228 at bats with 12 steals to boot. Jesus Posso got the rare start at catcher, a position I thought the Phillies have scrapped for him given the depth they have now and his defensive acumen.
