Guys, the Phillies are NOT getting Mike Trout so just stop! FF #78

New, 20 comments

On this week's Thanksgiving edition of The Felske Files, host John Stolnis goes solo and rants about the unrealistic hopes of trading for Mike Trout. Also, how the Phils' 40-man roster decisions affect their Hot Stove pursuits, whether MLB facing a work stoppage over the CBA negotiations, and which former stars are on this year's MLB Hall of Fame ballot.

I know, I know, I know. You want Mike Trout to be a Phillie. So do I. So does his family. So does he, probably.

And yet, we can't have him. You know why? He plays for those stupid Angels who live on the stupid west coast in stupid southern California with their perfect weather, beaches everywhere and laid back attitude that makes you want to push them in the ocean or something.

OK, that got a little more violent then I was anticipating, but you get my point. We all want Mike Trout. But guess what? The Phils ain't getting him. At least, not for a long time.

Host John Stolnis discussed that and other issues in Episode 78 of the podcast, including...

PHILLIES 40 MAN ROSTER DECISIONS

  • Phillies added 11 players last week
  • Drew Anderson, minor leaguer added of note, where did he come from?
  • Phis let three go, including David Buchanan and flame-thrower Jimmy Cordero
  • Still a number of players who could be let go in the coming weeks, including Cody Asche, Phil Klein and Severino Gonzalez
  • Phils need more bench depth, which could be acquired in place of the players listed above
  • Some quality prospects remain exposed to the Rule 5 draft

PHILLIES TRADE CORDERO/DFA BUCHANAN

  • Phillies trade Cordero to the Washington Nationals for a player to be named later, but why?
  • Injuries derailed Cordero's 2016 season, caught in a numbers crunch
  • Buchanan was actually pretty good in 2014, but tanked in '15 and spent '16 in AAA

TRADING FOR MIKE TROUT

  • Is there any way the Phillies could swing a deal for Mike Trout?
  • Simply put, no.
  • Trout is going to be one of the 5 best players of ALL TIME if this keeps up
  • Phils don't have enough in value to offer, and no team will ever give up what it would take to get him
  • The earliest you could see Trout in a Phillies uniform is 2021, when he's a free agent

JOHN MIDDLETON IS THE "MAN"

  • Middleton is now controlling partner of the Phils
  • Nothing new here, but confirmation of what we knew to be the existing power structure
  • Middleton has done nothing but allow his underlings to do the job that needs to be done
  • Will he be "Steinbrenner South" soon?

MLB LABOR TALKS... IS A LOCKOUT COMING?

  • Fox Sports' Ken Rosenthal reports a lockout could be on the way if a CBA is not agreed to by Dec. 1
  • 24 hours later, ESPN's Jayson Stark reported progress has been made!
  • Everyone needs a hard deadline... nothing more than saber rattling
  • Don't expect to see an international draft, but rules changes are coming for how teams sign international players
  • The attachment of a draft pick to free agents who accepted qualifying offers is going away too
  • Rosters will expand a bit for most of the season, then are drastically cut back in September

MLB HALL OF FAME ANNOUNCEMENTS

  • Six former Phillies on the list this year: Curt Schilling, Billy Wagner, Arthur Rhodes, Danys Baez, Pat Burrell and Aaron Rowand
  • Two steroids-tainted players on the ballot for the first time, Manny Ramirez and Pudge Rodriguez
  • The great Vlad Guerrero also makes the ballot for the first time, is he a first ballot HoFer? I say no.
  • Jeff Bagwell will get in
  • Tim Raines SHOULD get in
  • Trevor Hoffman and Schill miss the cut again

THANKSGIVING MESSAGE

  • Thank you to the listeners for being with me this whole time
