Phillies Minor League Roundup - April 26, 2016

Today's Probables:

LHV: Zach Eflin
REA: Anthony Vasquez
CLR: Matt Imhof
LWD: Shane Watson

Scranton/WB 4, Lehigh Valley 3 (10 innings)

Reinier Roibal - 3.1 IP, 6 H, 3 R, 3 ER, 2 BB, K, HBP, 4 GB, 2 FB
Hoby Milner - 3.1 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 3 K
Darnell Sweeney - 1 for 4, RBI, K
Taylor Featherson - 1 for 4, HR
Andrew Knapp - 1 for 4, HR, 2 K (passed ball)
Tommy Joseph - 1 for 4
Cam Perkins - 1 for 4, K

Adam Morgan is scratched from this start, all but signaling his impending promotion to replace the injured Charlie Morton in Philadelphia. Long-man Reinier Roibal got his 3rd consecutive start and the results were about as good as the other two. In all three starts this season he has gone 3-3.1 IP and has given up 3 earned runs in each. Hoby Milner stopped the bleeding and has been excellent thus far in his relief role. The tall, lanky LHP has thrown 5.1 innings of no-hit, no run ball with no walks and 8 strikeouts. Down 3-2 in the top of the 9th, Taylor Featherston delivered his 2nd HR of the season to tie the game. Bobby LaFromboise loaded the bases with two outs in the bottom of the 10th. A costly passed ball from Andrew Knapp allowed the walk-off run to score. Knapp did however hit his 3rd HR of the season in this game.

Akron 5, Reading 2

Ricardo Pinto - 6 IP, 6 H, 2 R, 2 ER, K, HR, 6 GB, 6 FB
Yacksel Rios - 1 IP, 4 H, 2 R, 2 ER, BB, 2 K
Miguel Nunez - 1 IP, 3 H, 1 R, 1 ER, 2 K, HR
Roman Quinn - 0 for 4, 2 K
J.P. Crawford - 0 for 3, BB, K
Rhys Hoskins - 1 for 4, R, K
Dylan Cozens - 0 for 4, 3 K
Jesmuel Valentin - 3 for 4, R, 2B, RBI
Aaron Brown - 1 for 4, 2 K, picked off

Ricardo Pinto threw 60 of his 89 pitches for strikes and didn't walk a batter for the second consecutive start. He left the game tied before Rios and Nunez (making his AA debut) relinquished the lead. The offense was stifled outside of Valentin, who provided half of the 6 hits the Fightins were able to muster. Roman Quinn is absolutely struggling at the plate and is batting .198/.237/.278 in 72 at-bats. Many expected the speedy centerfielder to begin the season at AAA, but hasn't shown much in the early going to prove that we were right.

Daytona 5, Clearwater 3

Tom Eshelman - 6 IP, 6 H, 3 R, 3 ER, 3 BB, 5 K, HR, 4 GB, 6 FB
Matt Hockenberry - 2 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 2 BB, K
Jesen Therrien - 0.1 IP, 1 H, 2 R, 2 ER, BB, K, HR
Scott Kingery - 2 for 4, R, 2B, BB
Cord Sandberg - 1 for 5, 2 K
Carlos Tocci - 0 for 4, RBI, K
Kyle Martin - 2 for 4, BB, CS
Mitch Walding - 0 for 4, R, BB, 3 K
Zach Green - 0 for 3, K, HBP
Malquin Canelo - 1 for 4, R, 2B (fielding error)
Chace Numata - 1 for 3, BB
Herlis Rodriguez - 2 for 3, 2B, 2 RBI, HBP

Despite giving up a season high 6 hits and 3 walks, Eshelman limited damage and walked away with three earned runs. A Herlis Rodriguez RBI-single in the top of the 8th would tie the game. Enter Jesen Therrien, who immediately walks the leadoff batter in the bottom of the 9th. After striking out the next batter, he would give up a 2-run walkoff homerun to end the game. Despite the loss, the Threshers out-hit Daytona 9-8. Scott Kingery remains red hot at the plate, batting .296/.390/.408 with 5 stolen bases. Rodriguez's two hits were his first in four games.

Charleston 7, Lakewood 4 (11 innings)

Tyler Gilbert - 5 IP, 6 H, 1 R, 1 ER, 2 BB, 6 K, 5 GB, 1 FB
Luis Morales - 2.2 IP, 1 H, 2 R, 0 ER, BB, 4 K
Robert Tasin - 1.1 IP, 3 H, 0 R, BB, 2 K
Alejandro Arteaga - 1.2 IP, 3 H, 4 R, 4 ER, 4 BB, 2 K
Alberto Tirado - 0.1 IP, 0 H, 0 R, BB, K, HBP
Emmanuel Marrero - 2 for 6, RBI
Grenny Cumana - 1 for 5, 2 K (two throwing errors)
Wilson Garcia - 2 for 5, K
Jose Pujols - 2 for 4, 2 R, 2B, BB, SB
Damek Tomscha - 0 for 5
Jiandido Tromp - 1 for 5, 2B, RBI, 2 K
Jan Hernandez - 0 for 2, R, 3 BB, K, CS
Samuel Hiciano - 0 for 5, K
Austin Bossart - 1 for 3, 2 BB

After two disastrous outings, Tyler Gilbert pitched his team to 3-1 lead when he exited the game. Sadly, the bullpen imploded spectacularly. After giving up two unearned runs to tie the game in the 8th, it would go to extras. The sequence of events in the top of the 11th aren't for the faint of heart. Check it out here if you dare. Jose Pujols hot streak has been the lone bright spot for the struggling (and injured) Lakewood squad. In his last 9 games he is batting .342/.381/.605 in 38 at-bats with 3 HR.
