Phillies Minor League Roundup - May 31, 2016

Butch Dill-USA TODAY Sports

Today's Probables:

LHV: Ben Lively
REA: TBD
CLR: Ranfi Casimiro
LWD: Harold Arauz

Norfolk 8, Lehigh Valley 6

Jake Thompson - 3.2 IP, 9 H, 8 R, 6 ER, 3 BB, 5 K, HR, 2 GB, 4 FB
Luis Garcia - 1.2 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 2 K
Edubray Ramos - 2 IP, 2 H, 0 R, K
J.P. Crawford - 2 for 5, 2 R, K
Cody Asche - 2 for 5, 2 R, 2B, RBI, K (fielding error)
Nick Williams - 0 for 5, RBI, 3 K
Andrew Knapp - 1 for 3, R, RBI, BB, 2 K
Brock Stassi - 2 for 3, 2 RBI, BB, K, SB
Darnell Sweeney - 1 for 4, R, 2 K

Jake Thompson gave up 1 walk and 4 hits (including a 3-run HR) in the 1st inning and the IronPigs offense would back him up with 6 runs of their own across the first 2 innings. Thompson would end his evening with allowing 3 runs in the 4th inning (only 1 was earned) when he was promptly removed from the game. He had 5 good start prior to this stinker, so there are no immediate concerns. However, this was easily his worst outing of the season (10 GS). J.P. Crawford broke out of his 0 for 17 slump with a multi-hit game. Edubray Ramos has now pitched 13.1 innings of scoreless baseball in AAA. He has 14 strikeouts to just 1 walk.

Reading 6, Portland 4

John Richy - 6 IP, 8 H, 4 R, 1 ER, BB, 3 K, 8 GB, 5 FB (missed catch error)
Hoby Milner - 2 IP, 2 H, 0 R, 3 K
Miguel Nunez - 1 IP, 2 H, 0 R
Roman Quinn - 3 for 5, 2 R, HR, 3 RBI, 2 K, CS
Jorge Alfaro - 2 for 5, 2B, K
Dylan Cozens - 0 for 2, RBI, 2 BB, K
Angelo Mora - 1 for 4, R
Carlos Alonso - 0 for 4, 2 K
Aaron Brown - 1 for 2, 2 R, 2 BB, K, CS (fielding error)

John Richy picks up his 2nd AA win, but wasn't necessarily dominant on the mound. He went a season-high 6 innings, but his own error accounted for one of his unearned runs. Roman Quinn hit his 2nd HR of the season, a solo-shot to lead off the game. Quinn is hitting .274/.354/.387 in 186 at bats, including 24 steals (to 5 caught stealing). Jorge Alfaro had another multi-hit game and quietly has an 8-game hitting streak going. He still has a very suspect 23 strikeouts to only 2 walks in 125 at-bats.

Tampa 11, Clearwater 3

Shane Watson - 3.1 IP, 7 H, 7 R, 7 ER, 6 BB, 2 K, 4 GB, 2 FB
Yacksel Rios - 2.2 IP, 2 H, 0 R, K
Alberto Tirado - 1.1 IP, 2 H, 4 R, 4 ER, 3 BB, 3 K, WP
Matt Hockenberry - 1.2 IP, 3 H, 0 R, 2 K, WP
Scott Kingery - 0 for 5, K
Carlos Tocci - 0 for 5, 2 K
Andrew Pullin - 1 for 3, BB
Kyle Martin - 0 for 4, 3 K
Zach Green - 1 for 4, R, 2B, 3 K
Mitch Walding - 2 for 4, 2 R, 2B, K
Gabriel Lino - 1 for 3, BB, K
Malquin Canelo - 3 for 4, 2B, 2 RBI
Cord Sandberg - 0 for 2, RBI, BB, K

Sometimes it just isn't your day, which can easily said about yesterday's Thresher effort. Pitching allows 14 hits and 9 walks and the offense struck out 12 times. Shane Watson hasn't looked good since getting the promotion to Clearwater. He has given up 13 hits and 9 walks in just 8.1 innings (2 GS). Alberto Tirado made his return (and oddly his promotion to Clearwater) on Sunday after a month-long absence. Unfortunately, he is yielding the same results before he went on the DL.

West Virginia 6, Lakewood 1

Luke Leftwich - 7 IP, 6 H, 2 R, 2 ER, BB, 5 K, HBP, 6 GB, 6 FB
Sutter McLoughlin - 1 IP, 3 H, 4 R, 3 ER, BB (throwing error)
Carlos Duran - 0 for 4, K
Emmanuel Marrero - 0 for 4, 3 K
Josh Tobias - 1 for 3, R, 2B, BB, K
Jose Pujols - 2 for 3, 2B, RBI, HBP, CS (outfield assist, 2B)
Wilson Garcia - 0 for 3
Jan Hernandez - 0 for 3, 2 K
Austin Bossart - 1 for 3
Jiandido Tromp - 0 for 3, 3 K
Venn Biter - 0 for 1, BB, K, CS
Deivi Grullon - 0 for 1 (pinch hitter)

Another quality start and another loss for hard-luck Leftwich. He lowered his season ERA/WHIP to 2.83 and 1.28, respectively. The Lakewood offense sputtered behind him, only collecting 4 hits and 2 walks. Pujols' RBI was his 32nd of the season, which is good for 5th in the South Atlantic League. Tobias' double in the game was his 12, which tied him with a bunch of folks for 6th best in the league.
