Phillies Minor League Roundup - June 28, 2016

Tim Heitman-USA TODAY Sports

Today's Probables:

LHV: David Buchanan
REA: Nick Pivetta
CLR: Yacksel Rios
LWD: Harold Arauz
WIL: GM1 Ranger Suarez, GM2 Seranthony Dominguez

Columbus 1, Lehigh Valley 0

James Russell - 7 IP, 5 H, 1 R, 0 ER, 3 K, 13 GB, 3 FB
Dalier Hinojosa - 1 IP, 1 H, 0 R, K
J.P. Crawford - 0 for 2, BB
Andrew Knapp - 0 for 4, 2 K
Brock Stassi - 1 for 3, 2 K
Cam Perkins - 1 for 3, CS
Darnell Sweeney - 1 for 3, 2B (fielding error)

Despite going a season-high 7 innings of no-earned run ball, James Russell still gets the loss. The offense collected just 4 hits and one walk on the night, going 0 for 5 with RISP and leaving 4 on base. Their only extra base hit came via Darnell Sweeney's double in the bottom of the 6th.

Reading 7, Erie 2

Tom Eshelman - 5 IP, 5 H, 0 R, 2 K, 9 GB, 2 FB
Mario Hollands - 2 IP, 3 H, 0 R, BB, 2 K
Angelo Mora - 2 for 5, RBI, K
Jorge Alfaro - 1 for 4, HR, K
Dylan Cozens - 1 for 4, R, 2B, 2 K
Rhys Hoskins - 4 for 4, 2 R, 2B
Aaron Brown - 0 for 3, R, BB, 2 K

Tom Eshelman picks up his first AA win and lowered his ERA to 0.90 (SSS, just two starts). He might have gone more innings, but a 1 hour and 46 min rain delay ended his night. The offense continued to do their thing. Jorge Alfaro blasted his 9th HR, a solo-hot in the 4th inning. The Immortal Jake Fox struck again, hitting a 3-run bomb in the 4th as well (his 14th). Rhys Hoskins also had a big night, raising his season line to .289/.355/.564 with 20 HR. It screams "call-up", but I'm not sure if the Phillies brass wants to keep this group together a little while longer.

Daytona 3, Clearwater 0

John Richy - 6.1 IP, 7 H, 3 R, 3 ER, BB, 4 K, HR, 8 GB, 3 FB
Matt Hockenberry - 1.2 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 3 K
Jesen Therrien - 1 IP, 1 H, 0 R
Carlos Tocci - 0 for 3, HBP
Scott Kingery - 3 for 3, SB, HBP
Mitch Walding - 0 for 2, 2 BB
Zach Green - 0 for 4, 2 K
Kyle Martin - 0 for 3, BB, 2 K
Jiandido Tromp - 0 for 3, 3 K
Malquin Canelo - 1 for 4
Cord Sandberg - 0 for 4, K
Austin Bossart - 0 for 4, K (throwing error)

John Richy pitches well enough, but gets tagged with his 3rd loss with Clearwater. The offense went 0 for 9 with RISP and left 9 on base. Scott Kingery continues to tease with his contact/on-base/speed skills. His SB was his 20th of the season, good for 5th highest in the FSL.

Lakewood 12, Hagerstown 5

Alberto Tirado - 3 IP, 4 H, 2 R, 2 ER, 4 BB, 3 K, HR, HBP, 1 GB, 2 FB
Edgar Garcia - 4 IP, 2 H, 1 R, 1 ER, 2 K, 7 GB, 0 FB
Jacob Waguespack - 1 IP, 0 H, 0 R, K
Robert Tasin - 1 IP, 3 H, 2 R, 2 ER, 2 BB, 2 K
Zack Coppola - 4 for 5, 3 R, BB (outfield assist, home)
Grenny Cumana - 1 for 4, R, 2B, RBI, BB, K, HBP
Josh Tobias - 2 for 6, 2 R, 2B, 3 RBI, K
Wilson Garcia - 1 for 5, RBI, K
Damek Tomscha - 2 for 4, 3 R, RBI, BB, K
Deivi Grullon - 3 for 6, R, RBI, 2 K
Brendon Hayden - 1 for 3, R, BB, K, HBP
Carlos Duran - 3 for 5, R, 2 RBI
Emmanuel Marrero - 0 for 5, RBI, K

This was your typical Alberto Tirado outing unfortunately. Despite tantalizing stuff, he just has no means of possibly ever being able to locate/harness it. Thankfully the offense was able to cobble together 12 runs on 17 hits. Remarkably, this was done with just two extra base hits. Its only a matter of time before guys like Tobias and Coppola are given an opportunity at the next level, as both have shown for stretches that they are above this level of competition. With 3-hits last night, Deivi Grullon is batting .366 in his last 10 games.

Williamsport, Tri-City (postponed due to rain, will be made up today as part of a doubleheader)

GCL Tigers West 6, GCL Phillies 2

Will Stewart - 5 IP, 2 H, 0 R, 2 BB, 4 K, WP, 5 GB, 4 FB
Kale Futz - 1 IP, 1 H, 0 R
Jordan Kurokawa - 1 IP, 0 H, 0 R
Ismael Cabrera - 1.2 IP, 2 H, 4 R, 1 ER, K, HBP
Randy Alcantara - 0.1 IP, 2 H, 2 R, 1 ER, BB
Jesus Alastre - 0 for 4
Daniel Brito - 0 for 4
Malvin Matos - 3 for 4, 2 R, HR, K
Danny Zardon - 1 for 4, 2 K (throwing error)
Jhailyn Ortiz - 0 for 4, 2 K
Nerluis Martinez - 1 for 2
Lenin Rodriguez - 0 for 2 (throwing error)
Enger Jimenez - 0 for 3, BB, K
Edwin Rodriguez - 0 for 3, BB
Chandler Hall - 0 for 1
Evan Rogers - 0 for 2

18 year old Will Stewart, a 2015 20th round pick, appears to be repeating the GCL again this year. Last year he was used strictly as a reliever, though sometimes asked to go 2-3 innings. The GCL Phils held a 2-0 lead heading into the 9th inning before the bullpen and defense fell apart, with the Tigers scoring all 6 of their runs in the top of the inning. The lone offensive standout from yesterday's game was Malvin Matos, a 19 yr old from Venezuela, collecting 3 hits, including his first HR.
