Today's Probables:
Lehigh Valley: Jake Thompson vs. Buffalo
Reading: Mark Leiter @ Trenton
Clearwater: Ranfi Casimiro @ Palm Beach
Lakewood: Edgar Garcia @ Charleston
Williamsport: Julian Garcia @ Vermont
Lehigh Valley 6, Buffalo 1 [box]
David Buchanan - 7 IP, 5 H, 1 ER, 1 BB, 2 K, 1 HR
J.P. Crawford - 3 for 5, 1 R, 1 HR, 1 2B, 3 RBI
Nick Williams - 2 for 5, 2 R, 2 2B
The Iron Pigs put up four runs in the third and two more in the fourth to cruise to a 6-1 win over the Bisons. The Pigs bashed out 17 hits in the process as Buchanan tossed one of his best games of the season. Frank Herrmann, Elvis Araujo and Luis Garcia combined to finish off the ballgame, as the bullpen moves on without Edward Mujica, who asked for and was granted his release from the club earlier in the day. Former Phillie Domonic Brown went 2 for 3.
Reading 4, Trenton 2 [box]
Tyler Viza - 8 IP, 2 H, 2 ER, 0 BB, 7 K, 1 HR
Jorge Alfaro - 2 for 5, 1 RBI, 1 K
Dylan Cozens - 0 for 5, 3 K
Rhys Hoskins - 0 for 4, 1 K
Jake Fox - 2 for 3, 1 R, 1 HR, 1 RBI, 1 BB
The Fightins got just enough offense against the Thunder on Thursday night, and that's not always easy when your top two power guys combine to go for 0 for 9. KC Serna added two hits, and Viza put together his best start in Reading thus far, retiring the last 23 batters he faced.
Clearwater 8, Palm Beach 6 [box]
Luke Leftwich - 1.2 IP, 3 H, 3 ER, 3 BB, 2 K
Carlos Tocci - 2 for 5, 1 R, 1 K
Scott Kingery - 2 for 5, 1 R, 1 3B, 2 RBI
Kyle Martin - 3 for 5, 1 2B, 1 RBI
Clearwater has been a different animal for Leftwich, who has struggled mightily in four starts with the Threshers. He has a 7.88 ERA and opponents are hitting .338 against him, and he certainly doesn't look like the guy who was dominating in Lakewood. Will Morris allowed two runs over three innings in what turned into a long day for the bullpen. Jimmy Cordero got two scoreless innings of work in and struck out two.
Hickory 4, Lakewood 3 [box]
Jose Taveras - 4.2 IP, 9 H, 3 R, 2 ER, 1 BB, 4 K
Cornelius Randolph - 3 for 3, 2 BB
Jose Pujols - 1 for 5, 4 K
Deivi Grullon - 2 for 5, 2 R, 1 HR, 2 RBI
The Blue Claws had 13 hits but were only able to push three runs across. It was a perfect night for Randolph, who reached base all five times. He's hitting .381/.500/.476 in his first 21 at-bats in July. Grullon's homer was his 6th of the season.
Williamsport 6, Vermont 2 [box]
Bailey Falter - 6 IP, 5 H, 2 ER, 0 BB, 5 K
Arquimedes Gamboa - 3 for 5, 3 R, 1 2B, 1 SB
David Martinelli - 2 for 4, 1 2B, 2 RBI
Darick Hall - 1 for 4, 2 RBI, 2 K
Gregori Rivero - 2 for 4, 1 R, 1 2B, 2 K
After allowing two runs in the first inning, Falter settled in and put together a nice night. He now has three consecutive starts without allowing a walk. Rivero is now hitting .311/.340/.489 on the season. Hall's two-run single in the 5th put the Crosscutters in front for good.
Moniak Watch:
1 for 4, 1 R, 1 BB
