Today's Probables:
LHV: David Buchanan
REA: Mark Leiter
CLR: Luke Leftwich
LWD: Jose Tavares
Lehigh Valley 2, Rochester 0
Jake Thompson - 7 IP, 3 H, 0 R, 2 BB, 3 K, 10 GB, 6 FB
Daniel Stumpf - 1 IP, 1 H, 0 R, K
Andrew Bailey - 1 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 2 K
J.P. Crawford - 3 for 4, R
Nick Williams - 1 for 4, CS, picked off
Andrew Knapp - 2 for 3, R, 2B, BB
Brock Stassi - 2 for 4, 2B, 2 RBI, K
Cam Perkins - 1 for 4, K
Darnell Sweeney - 0 for 3, BB, 2 K
Jake Thompson won't dazzle you with flashy strikeouts, but what he has done recently might be just as impressive. He now has 7 quality starts in a row. During that stretch he has gone: 49.1 IP, 35 H, 4 ER, 12 BB, 27 K, 1 HR. He is a trade/injury away from making his MLB debut. J.P. Crawford has also been stupid-good lately, batting .333 in his last 10 games. Andrew Knapp has hitting the ball lately as well, batting .324 in his last 10.
Richmond 9, Reading 0
Tyler Viza - 6.1 IP, 7 H, 5 R, 5 ER, 4 K, 2 HR, 6 GB, 5 FB
Miguel Nunez - 0.0 IP, 1 H, 1 R, 1 ER, 3 BB
Matt Hockenberry - 1.2 IP, 3 H, 3 R, 3 ER, BB, K
Jesmuel Valentin - 1 for 4, 2B, BB
Jorge Alfaro - 0 for 3, BB, K
Dylan Cozens - 0 for 4, K
Rhys Hoskins - 0 for 3, BB
Aaron Brown - 0 for 3, K
Angelo Mora - 0 for 0, 2 BB
This was just one of those games where neither the Reading pitching or hitting had any answers. Tyler Viza gave up a 2-run HR in the first, then cruised through until the 7th inning in which he gave up the other 3 runs (which included two inherited runners that Nunez allowed to score). The offense was held to 3 hits, but managed 8 walks in the game. They also went 0 for 13 with RISP.
Clearwater 7, Lakeland 6
Elniery Garcia - 5.2 IP, 8 H, 4 R, 4 ER, BB, 4 K, HR, 7 GB, 2 FB
Jesen Therrien - 1 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 3 BB, K
Joey Denato - 0.2 IP, 1 H, 2 R, 2 ER, BB, K, HR
Ulises Joaquin - 1.2 IP, 0 H, 0 R, BB, K
Scott Kingery - 0 for 4, R, BB
Cord Sandberg - 1 for 4, R, 2 K
Carlos Tocci - 2 for 4, R, RBI
Kyle Martin - 1 for 3, 2 R, HR, 2 RBI, 2 BB, K, CS
Zach Green - 1 for 4, 2 R, 2B, BB, 2 K
Mitch Walding - 3 for 5, 2B, K, SB
Chace Numata - 2 for 4, 2 RBI
Malquin Canelo - 1 for 4, RBI, K
Jiandido Tromp - 0 for 3, BB
Elniery Garcia improved to 7-2 despite not giving his best performance. He's had roughly two weeks off, so perhaps it was shaking the rust off a bit. His big mistake was giving up 2-run HR in the bottom of the 3rd. Kyle Martin hit his 12th HR, his 4th in his last 10 games.
Lakewood 7, Delmarva 1
Franklyn Kilome - 5 IP, 3 H, 1 R, 1 ER, 5 BB, 7 K, 3 GB, 1 FB
Jeff Singer - 3 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 2 BB, 5 K
Skylar Hunter - 1 IP, 1 H, 0 R
Grenny Cumana - 4 for 4, R, 2B, 2 RBI, CS, HBP
Zack Coppola - 1 for 5, K
Josh Tobias - 3 for 4, 2 R, HR, 2 RBI, BB, K
Damek Tomscha - 0 for 3, 2 BB
Wilson Garcia - 0 for 5, K
Jose Pujols - 0 for 3, R, 2 BB, 2 K
Deivi Grullon - 1 for 5, R, 2B, K
Carlos Duran - 2 for 4, R, 2 RBI, K, SB
Luis Espiritu - 0 for 3, R, BB, K
A bit of a mixed bag for Franklyn Kilome. I would say its rare for a pitcher to escape the game without a loss, let alone earning a win, despite walking 5 batters. The command is a work in progress, but Kilome has struck out 66 batters in 67 innings. There is certainly still time for it to come together. Josh Tobias hit his 7th HR in the game and improved his season line to .302/.373/.456. Carlos Duran stole his 10th base.
Connecticut 2, Williamsport 1
Felix Paulino - 6 IP, 4 H, 1 R, 0 ER, 3 K, WP, 11 GB, 3 FB
Grant Dyer - 1 IP, 2 H, 1 R, 1 ER, 3 K
Scott Harris - 1 IP, 0 H, 0 R, BB
David Martinelli - 1 for 4, R, K, CS
Jesus Alastre - 2 for 4
Lucas Williams - 1 for 4, RBI, K, CS, picked off (fielding error)
Darick Hall - 2 for 4, K
Luis Encarnacion - 0 for 4, K
Arquimedes Gamboa - 0 for 4, 2 K (throwing error)
Henri Lartigue - 1 for 4
Enmanuel Garcia - 1 for 4, 2 K
Jose Antequera - 1 for 3, 2 K
It's been feast or famine for Felix Paulino so far. In his first and last start, he has gone 12 IP, 7 H, 0 ER, BB, 8 K. In his 2nd and 3rd starts, he has gone 6.2 IP, 20 H, 12 ER, 2 BB, 2 K. Grant Dyer gave up the go-ahead run in the bottom of the 7th. Dyer is our 2016 8th round pick. Jesus Alastre is now 10 for 26 at the plate in the early going. Arquimedes Gamboa is doing nearly the opposite, hitting 6 for 54.
GCL Phillies, GCL Tigers East (game was suspended in the 3rd due to rain, will be continued today as part of a doubleheader)
