Phillies Minor League Roundup - July 7, 2016

Weekend Probables:

LHV: Ben Lively, James Russell, Anthony Vasquez
REA: Tom Eshelman, TBD, TBD
CLR: Ranfi Casimiro, Shane Watson, TBD
LWD: Edgar Garcia, Tyler Gilbert, Alberto Tirado
WIL: Bailey Falter, Julian Garcia, Adonis Medina

Rochester 8, Lehigh Valley 7

David Buchanan - 5 IP, 3 H, 3 R, 3 ER, 3 BB, 4 K, HR, 8 GB, 1 FB
Daniel Stumpf - 0.1 IP, 3 H, 3 R, 3 ER
J.P. Crawford - 3 for 5, 2 2B
Nick Williams - 1 for 5, R, 2 K
Cam Perkins - 3 for 5, 2 R, HR, 2 RBI, K
Brock Stassi - 1 for 5, HR, 2 K
Darnell Sweeney - 2 for 4, R, RBI
Logan Moore - 1 for 4, RBI, 2 K (throwing error)

Surprisingly, David Buchanan left the game with the lead. Sadly, the bullpen melted down. Daniel Stumpf, Luis Garcia and Dalier Hinojosa all contributed to the loss (2 IP, 5 H, 5 ER, 3 BB, K). J.P. Crawford remains on an absolutely torrid streak at the plate. In his last 22 games he is batting .352/.398/.462 in 100 plate appearances. Cam Perkins and Brock Stassi homered in the game, both their 5th HRs of the season. Taylor Featherson added his 10th HR as well.

Richmond 6, Reading 5

Mark Leiter - 5.2 IP, 6 H, 4 R, 2 ER, BB, 6 K, 5 GB, 2 FB
Mario Hollands - 0.1 IP, 2 H, 1 R, 1 ER
Hoby Milner - 1.2 IP, 3 H, 1 R, 1 ER, 4 K, WP
Andrew Pullin - 2 for 4, HR, 2 RBI, BB
Jorge Alfaro - 1 for 4, HR, BB, 2 K, SB
Dylan Cozens - 1 for 4, BB, K, SB
Rhys Hoskins - 0 for 3, R, 2 BB, SB
Harold Martinez - 1 for 5, RBI, K
Angelo Mora - 0 for 4 (throwing error)
Jesmuel Valentin - 2 for 2, 2 R, HR

Mark Leiter was effective, but to sound like a broken record, the bullpen failed him. Hoby Milner gave up the walk-off RBI single in the 9th to lose the game. Jorge Alfaro hit his 11th HR, a solo shot, in the 1st inning. Andrew Pullin comes off the DL and blasts his 2nd HR in AA. Jesmuel Valentin added his 5th HR in the 7th when he came into the game to spell KC Serna at SS.

Dunedin 10, Clearwater 3

Luke Leftwich - 4 IP, 7 H, 5 R, 3 ER, BB, 4 K, HBP, 2 GB, 6 FB
Austin Davis - 2 IP, 4 H, 1 R, 1 ER
Ismael Cabrera - 2 IP, 4 H, 4 R, 4 ER, BB, 4 K, HR, WP
Scott Kingery - 0 for 4, BB (throwing error)
Cord Sandberg - 3 for 5, R, 2B
Carlos Tocci - 1 for 3, R, 2B, BB
Kyle Martin - 0 for 1, RBI, 2 BB
Zach Green - 1 for 4, 2B, RBI, 2 K
Mitch Walding - 0 for 4, K
Chace Numata - 1 for 3, 2B, K (passed ball)
Malquin Canelo - 1 for 4, K, 2 CS (fielding error)
Derek Campbell - 2 for 4, HR, 2 K

Another poor outing for Luke Leftwich, who has struggled in his 3 starts with Clearwater. The one positive is he keeps striking out batters without walking many, so there are signs that he can breakthrough. Overall, Thresher pitching gave up 15 hits on the day. Derek Campbell hit his 4th HR of the season. Cord Sandberg has 8 hits in his last 5 games (he had just one in his previous 5 games).

Lakewood 3, West Virginia 2 (10 innings)

Jose Tavares - 8 IP, 7 H, 2 R, 2 ER, BB, 6 K, WP, 10 GB, 4 FB
Zach Morris - 2 IP, 1 H, 0 R, BB, 2 K
Grenny Cumana - 1 for 3, BB, K, HBP
Carlos Duran - 1 for 4, R, 2B, RBI
Josh Tobias - 1 for 3, K
Damek Tomscha - 0 for 3, R, BB, K
Jose Pujols - 2 for 3, RBI, K, CS
Deivi Grullon - 1 for 4, 2B, RBI, K
Cornelius Randolph - 0 for 3, 3 K
Brendon Hayden - 0 for 3, BB
Emmanuel Marrero - 1 for 3

Jose Tavares had an 8-inning shutout going into the 9th inning. He'd give up 2 hits and a run before exiting the game. Zach Morris would allow an inherited runner to score to tie the game and push it to extra innings. Upon loading the bases in the bottom of the 10th, Carlos Duran hit a sac-fly to end the game. Grenny Cumana keeps getting hit by pitches and I don't really understand it. Cornelius Randolph, after a week in the GCL for rehab, returns to Lakewood. It wasn't a pretty return, but he made it through the entire game. I'd count that as a win at this point.

GCL Phillies 12, GCL Tigers East 5 (GM1 of doubleheader, completion of suspended game on 7/6)

Sixto Sanchez - 3 IP, 2 H, 1 R, 1 ER, BB, 2 K (pickoff error)
Jimmy Cordero - 1 IP, 0 H, 0 R
Geury Ortiz - 2 IP, 2 H, 3 R, 3 ER, 2 BB, K
Luis Gonzalez - 2 IP, 1 H, 1 R, 0 ER, 2 BB, 2 K
Tyler Forhwirth - 1 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 2 K
Daniel Brito - 2 for 5, 2 R, 2B, RBI
Cornelius Randolph - 0 for 1
Mickey Moniak - 2 for 3, HR, 4 RBI
Malvin Matos - 1 for 4, BB, K
Jhailyn Ortiz - 1 for 5, RBI, K
Edwin Rodriguez - 0 for 4, K
Daniel Garner - 1 for 4, R, 2 K
Raul Rivas - 2 for 4, 2 R (throwing and fielding errors)
Ben Pelletier - 1 for 3, 3 R, BB, K
Evan Rogers - 3 for 4, 3 R, 2B, HR, 6 RBI

Jimmy Cordero pitches a clean inning! After shoulder troubles have sidetracked his 2016, having him back into the fold would be very exciting. Mickey Moniak comes into replace Randolph as game resumed play to hit his first professional HR. Evan Rogers, a 22 year old undrafted FA, also hit his first HR.

GCL Phillies 8, GCL Tigers East 1 (GM2 of doubleheader, 7 innings)

Nick Fanti - 5 IP, 6 H, 1 R, 1 ER, BB, 4 K, 3 GB, 6 FB (throwing error)
Kale Futz - 2 IP, 1 H, 0 R, BB, K
Daniel Brito - 0 for 3, R, BB
Josh Stephen - 2 for 3, R, 2B, 2 RBI, BB, K, CS
Malvin Matos - 1 for 3, R, 2B, HBP
Jhailyn Ortiz - 2 for 3, 2 R, 3B, HR, 3 RBI, BB
Nerluis Martinez - 0 for 4
Lenin Rodriguez - 0 for 3, R, BB, K
Caleb Eldridge - 2 for 4, R, RBI, K
Cole Stobbe - 2 for 3
Raul Rivas - 1 for 3, R, 2B, 2 RBI, CS

Jhailyn Ortiz hits ANOTHER bomb, this one his 3rd of the season. All 3 of his homeruns have come in the last 4 games. Nick Fanti has looked good in the early going: 12.2 IP, 9 H, 2 ER, HR, 3 BB, 17 K (3 GS). He is a 19 year old 31st round pick from last year's draft.
