I guess Chris Christie won’t be buying Phillies season tickets.
On Wednesday night, the Republican New Jersey governor went on SportsNet New York’s “Baseball Night” and had some harsh words for Phils fans and the team painting the famous Tug McGraw phrase “Ya Gotta Believe” on one of the walls inside their spring training complext in Clearwater.
“The Phillies suck,” the governor said. “Let's just start with that. They're from Philadelphia. They're an awful team. They're an angry, bitter fan base and it's not safe for civilized people to go to Citizens Bank Park if you want to root for the other team.”
Christie followed that up with...
“Ya gotta believe what?” Christie continued. “Ya gotta believe we're awful people!"
Here’s a portion of the show where the exchange took place.
It’s clear Christie is not a fan of Philadelphia sports teams. A noted Dallas Cowboys fan, Christie has said Eagles fans “suck” and are “angry, awful people.”
The Phillies Twitter feed, which has quickly become one of the very best in baseball, had the perfect response to Christie’s rant.
We love our fans and appreciate their unwavering support as we "bridge" to a bright future!— Phillies (@Phillies) February 16, 2017
Game. Set. Match, Phillies.
Look, I’m not saying Phils fans, and Philadelphia fans in general, aren’t bitter. We have plenty of reason to be. I’m just saying a New York Mets fan isn’t allowed to say it.
