It can be hard sometimes to enjoy the team we have before us without worrying about the team we’re supposed to love in the future. We’re lucky that for the time being Odubel Herrera is part of that team, and we can love him without reservation. But what about Cesar Hernandez? Have we withheld our love because he may not be here forever?
That’s a big question for a Tuesday morning.
A peek inside Odubel Herrera’s mind
Matt Gelb of philly.com wrote a really fantastic piece on Odubel Herrera and his his hitting philosophy. Specifically, how long he waits to set up between pitches. According to Gelb, Herrera is taking the longest time of any hitter in the majors. There are some exceptionally fantastic quotes in this article, too. This is one of my favorites.
"Anything regarding Herrera, I don't know if any of it makes sense," Phillies manager Pete Mackanin said. "He's just an enigma."
And that is why we love Odubel Herrera. You should read the whole article, it’s well worth your time.
Cesar Hernandez is awesome, guys
I know I just wrote about Hernandez yesterday, but Jim Salisbury published a great piece about Hernandez that looks back at his start with the Phillies, and at his friendship with Freddy Galvis, which started when they were young teenagers. Hernandez has been amazing this season, but he knows that there are young’uns named Scott Kingery and Jesmuel Valentin nipping at his heels. (How did the Phillies get so flush at second base all of a sudden?) But Hernandez doesn’t care.
"Me," he said the other day, jabbing himself in the chest when asked who the Phillies' second baseman of the future is.
"I want to be a Phillie for life."
Be still my heart. I LOVE YOU, CÉSAR!!
