Game Thread 6/16: Diamondbacks at Phillies

Wait, the Diamondbacks are doing well?

MLB: Boston Red Sox at Philadelphia Phillies Bill Streicher-USA TODAY Sports

The Boston Red Sox are finally in our rearview mirror, and I don’t think I could be more thankful. Ending the series with a win was the cherry on top, but the sundae was not having to play them again in 2017.

And now the Phillies move on to the Diamondbacks. Normally I’d say that this is a chance for the Phillies to face a team of similar talent-level and futility, but the D-backs have done surprisingly well. Actually, surprisingly well is an understatement. They’re currently tied with the Dodgers for second in the NL West, one game behind the Rockies.

Look at that sentence I just typed. It’s bizarre. Diamondbacks and Rockies fighting for NL West dominance? I never thought I’d see the day.

All of this is to say that the Phillies will probably have a tougher time against the D-backs than in years past. They send Aaron Nola out to the mound tonight, and he’s facing Patrick Corbin. Corbin hasn’t been doing great, so hopefully the Phillies can take advantage.
