Phillies MLR 7/24/17: Rhys Hoskins is the one who knocks

Phillies Minor League Roundup for 7/24

Eliot Swartz

Today’s Probables:

LHV: Jake Thompson (11:35am MiLB.tv)
REA: Cole Irvin
CLR: GM1 Jacob Waguespack, GM2 Harold Arauz
LWD: Gustavo Armas (12:05pm MiLB.tv)
WIL: Andrew Brown

Gwinnett 9, Lehigh Valley 3

Zach Eflin - 5 IP, 10 H, 7 R, 7 ER, 2 BB, 9 K, WP, HBP, 2 GB, 3 FB (pickoff error)
Scott Kingery - 1 for 4
J.P. Crawford - 1 for 4, R, 2B, K
Rhys Hoskins - 1 for 4, HR, 2 RBI, K
Dylan Cozens - 0 for 4, 2 K
Jorge Alfaro - 0 for 4, 3 K
Andrew Pullin - 0 for 4, K

Good news is Zach Eflin struck out a season-high 9 batters...bad news is he gave up a season-high 7 runs. The only other real note of the game being Rhys Hoskins 23rd homerun of the season. That ties him with teammate Dylan Cozens for tops in on both the team and the International League.

Altoona 2, Reading 0

Tyler Viza - 7 IP, 4 H, 0 R, BB, 3 K, 9 GB, 7 FB
Austin Davis - 2 IP, 3 H, 2 R, 2 ER, 2 BB, 2 K
Zach Coppola - 0 for 3, BB, K
Angelo Mora - 0 for 3, BB, K
Carlos Tocci - 0 for 4, 2 K
Mitch Walding - 0 for 4, 2 K
Jiandido Tromp - 0 for 3, K
Malquin Canelo - 1 for 4, K

This was Tyler Viza’s first start this season in which he allowed neither a run or earned run. He even lowered his ERA to 5.59! The offense meanwhile got 4-hit, going 0 for 5 with RISP and leaving 8 on base.

Bradenton 6, Clearwater 3

Ranger Suarez - 5.1 IP, 10 H, 4 R, 4 ER, 3 BB, K, 6 GB, 4 FB
Mark Laird - 2 for 2, R, 3B
Cornelius Randolph - 2 for 5, R
Wilson Garcia - 2 for 4, RBI
Deivi Grullon - 0 for 4
Zach Green - 2 for 4, 2B, RBI
Jan Hernandez - 1 for 3, HR, 2 K (outfield assist, 2B)

Ranger Suarez’s shutout steak has come to an end. He hadn’t given up a run in his last 24.2 innings (4 starts, 2 in CLR, 2 in LWD). It was also the most hits he had given up in a game in his professional career. Jan Hernandez hit his 13th HR of the season last night. Hernandez has also seen a significant amount of time as a right fielder recently.

Lakewood 2, Charleston 0 (5 innings, completed early due to rain)

Sixto Sanchez - 5 IP, 3 H, 0 R, 3 BB, 5 K, 5 GB, 0 FB
Arquimedes Gamboa - 2 for 3, R, 3B, K
Raul Rivas - 0 for 2, R, RBI, BB
Mickey Moniak - 1 for 2, 3B, RBI, BB
Darick Hall - 0 for 2, K
Henri Lartigue - 0 for 2, BB, K
Edgar Cabral - 0 for 2
David Martinelli - 0 for 3, 2 K
Luke Williams - 0 for 2, BB, K
Jesus Alastre - 0 for 3

If you happened to have no life like myself, you were glued into Sixto’s start last night on MiLBtv. While this wasn’t the most efficient I’ve seen him, the stuff was still incredible to watch. There were times I watched his fastball/changeup combo and was left floored. He also works at a pretty fast pace. It was cool to see Sixto work out of a no-out bases loaded jam in the third by striking out a batter, then inducing a ground ball doubleplay. In the end, he still threw 50 of his 76 pitches for strikes before mother nature had enough and gave mercy to the Charleston hitters.

Williamsport 12, Auburn 4

Luis Carrasco - 6 IP, 4 H, 2 R, 2 ER, 2 BB, 9 K, HR, WP, 6 GB, 1 FB
Nick Maton - 2 for 4, R, 2B, RBI, K (fielding error)
Jake Scheiner - 1 for 4, HR, 2 RBI, BB
Adam Haseley - 1 for 5, 2 R
Greg Pickett - 3 for 4, 2 R, 2B, RBI, BB
Jhailyn Ortiz - 1 for 4, 2 R, HR, 3 RBI, BB
Cole Stobbe - 2 for 5, R, 2B, RBI, K
Josh Stephen - 0 for 3, R, BB, 2 K
Austin Listi - 3 for 4, 2 R, 2 2B, 2 RBI
Colby Fitch - 1 for 4, 2B, RBI (two passed balls)

Do you like dingers? Well check out this one from Jhailyn Ortiz, his 5th of the season. 2017 4th round pick Jake Scheiner (2) also mashed one last night. Luis Carrasco improved to 2-0 and is probably not long for Williamsport if I would gather.

GCL Phillies, GCL Tigers East (DH postponed due to rain)
