If you’re on Twitter and follow anything Phillies related, you probably saw highlights of J.P. Crawford’s inside the park grandslam last night. It was really something cool to see. For those that can’t access the link, Crawford crushed one off the centerfield high-wall which caused the ball to ricochet into left field. As Crawford is sent home, the throw comes in with plenty of time to tag him out, however...Crawford actually SLOWS DOWN and ducks underneath the tag to be safe. This was a lot of fun to watch. It was Crawford’s 9th HR of the season. Not to be outdone, Rhys Hoskins takes the team and league-lead in homers (24) with a solo-shot in the first inning last night.
Altoona 6, Reading 2
Jose Tavares - 6 IP, 4 H, 2 R, 2 ER, BB, 9 K, HR, 3 GB, 3 FB
Victor Arano - 0.1 IP, 1 H, 2 R, 2 ER, 2 BB, 2 K
Alberto Tirado - 1.2 IP, 1 H, 0 R, BB
Zach Coppola - 1 for 5, K, SB
Angelo Mora - 0 for 3, BB
Carlos Tocci - 1 for 3, R, 2 K, HBP (outfield assist, home)
Kyle Martin - 1 for 3, R, BB, K
Jiandido Tromp - 1 for 4, 2B, RBI, 2 K
Jose Tavares takes his first loss with Reading despite the above-average start. Not shown above, but Tom Windle is still really, really bad. He gave up two runs last night as his ERA rises to 5.23 on the season. Surprisingly, Victor Arano hasn’t been great since coming back from an injury which delayed his start to the season. Arano looked quite good in relief in 2016 and many thought he could quickly rise, but his struggles have been concerning. Zach Coppola stole his 15th base for Reading last night (25th overall this season) and has 5 in his last 10 games.
Clearwater 3, Daytona 0
Edgar Garcia - 6.2 IP, 5 H, 0 R, BB, 5 K, 6 GB, 6 FB (fielding error)
Jeff Singer - 2.1 IP, 1 H, 0 R, BB, 4 K
Grenny Cumana - 1 for 4, R
Cornelius Randolph - 2 for 4, 2 R, 2B, HR (outfield assist, home)
Zach Green - 0 for 4, 3 K
Jan Hernandez - 1 for 3, 2 K
Jose Pujols - 1 for 3, K
This was Edgar Garcia’s best start of the season since being converted from the bullpen. He has 70 strikeouts in 66 innings this season. The real highlight of the game was Cornelius Randolph’s 10th HR of the season. Randolph has been scorching his last 60 games, slashing .304/.395/.449 with 6 HR and 6 SB. The forgotten prospect could make some real noise if he finishes the season this hot.
GCL Phillies 9, GCL Tigers West 4 (10 innings)
Francisco Morales - 3 IP, 5 H, 3 R, 3 ER, 3 BB, 2 K, 2 WP, HBP, 2 GB, 2 FB
Kevin Markham - 0 for 5, R
Jonathan Guzman - 3 for 5, 2 R, HR, K, SB
Rafael Marchan - 1 for 3, R, BB
Quincy Nieporte - 0 for 4
Yahir Gurrola - 3 for 5, 2 R, 2B, 2 RBI, K, SB
Brayan Gonzalez - 1 for 4, RBI, SB
Danny Mayer - 2 for 5, HR, 4 RBI, 3 K
Edwin Rodriguez - 0 for 5, K
Gunnar Buhner - 0 for 5, 3 K
GCL Phils scores 6 runs in the top of the 10th innings for the rare 5-run extra innings win. Jonathan Guzman (1st with GCL, 2nd overall) and Danny Mayer (2) both go yard in this one. Guzman also picked up his 4th stolen base and is slashing .298/.359/.436 across 3 levels (GCL, WIL, CLR) in 94 at-bats. This is a 17 year old kid out of the Dominican Republic.
