Phillies MLR 8/17/17: Jose Tavares beginning to make noise

Phillies Minor League Roundup for 8/17

Reading dugout reflection

Lehigh Valley 6, Norfolk 1

Jose Tavares - 6 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 2 BB, 6 K, 4 GB, 6 FB
Scott Kingery - 2 for 5, 2 R, RBI, K
J.P. Crawford - 2 for 4, R, BB
Andrew Pullin - 2 for 5, R, 2B, RBI
Angelo Mora - 2 for 5, 2 2B
Dylan Cozens - 0 for 5, 3 K
Herlis Rodriguez - 1 for 3, 2 R, HR, BB, SB (outfield assist, home)
Carlos Tocci - 0 for 1 (pinch hitter)

Jose Tavares gave up a 2-out double in the 2nd inning and was in command the entire game. The crafty righty is now 2-1 with a 1.17 in 4 AAA starts this season. Herlis Rodriguez had himself a game, which might as well be a send-off with Carlos Tocci getting promoted yesterday. Though with how Dylan Cozens has been playing, Rodriguez could get time in the OF rotation a bit more down the stretch. J.P. Crawford is hitting .333 in his last 10 games.

Bowie 3, Reading 0

Cole Irvin - 8 IP, 4 H, 3 R, 3 ER, 2 BB, 7 K, 2 HR, 11 GB, 4 FB
Jeff Singer - 1 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 3 K
Zach Coppola - 1 for 2, BB, SB (outfield assist, home)
Jiandido Tromp - 0 for 4, 2 K
Zach Green - 0 for 3, BB, 3 K
Cord Sandberg - 0 for 3, 2 K
Deivi Grullon - 0 for 3, K
Malquin Canelo - 0 for 2, BB (fielding error)

Cole Irvin with a very good start, but takes the loss. The longball hurt him this outing, giving up solo shots in the 1st and 3rd innings. The offense went a disappointing 0 for 5 with RISP, leaving 6 on base. Zach Coppola swiped his 22nd bag with Reading and 32nd across two-levels this season. Of note, Zach Green makes his long-awaited AA debut after seasons of dealing with injuries and is someone that will likely have fun with hitting in Reading.

St. Lucie 6, Clearwater 4 (10 innings)

Edgar Garcia - 6 IP, 6 H, 3 R, 3 ER, 2 BB, 6 K, HR, 3 GB, 9 FB (pickoff error)
J.D. Hammer - 1 IP, 1 H, 0 R
Seth McGarry - 1.2 IP, 3 H, 3 R, 3 ER, 2 BB, K, 2 WP
Cornelius Randolph - 1 for 5, 3B, RBI, 2 K
Carlos Duran - 0 for 3, R, 2 BB, K, 2 SB
Edgar Cabral - 1 for 4, R, BB, K
Grenny Cumana - 0 for 2, R, BB
Austin Bossart - 2 for 3, 2B, 3 RBI

Other than his 3-run HR given up in the 1st inning, Edgar Garcia actually showed some competence on the mound last night. He left the game in a 3-2 deficit, but the Threshers clawed back to tie the game going into the 9th inning. Seth McGarry would enter to close the game, but allowed a wild pitch to score the tying run. McGarry for some reason was asked to return to start the ninth, where he would promptly give up the go-ahead run (Blake Quinn would relieve him and allowed an inherited runner to score).

Kannapolis 7, Lakewood 0

Mauricio Llovera - 4 IP, 6 H, 5 R, 5 ER, BB, 7 K, 2 WP, HBP, 3 GB, 1 FB
Daniel Brito - 1 for 4, K
Adam Haseley - 0 for 4, K
Mickey Moniak - 0 for 4, 2 K
Darick Hall - 0 for 2, K, 2 HBP
Henri Lartigue - 0 for 2, 2 BB
Colby Fitch - 0 for 2, BB, K
Luke Williams - 0 for 2, HBP
Raul Rivas - 0 for 3, 2 K
David Martinelli - 0 for 3, K

Kannapolis pitching limited the BlueClaws to just 1 hit and 7 baserunners all night. Mauricio Llovera fell to 1-3, but still holds an impressive 3.00 and 88 strikeouts in 78 innings this season.

Williamspot 9, Auburn 8

Spencer Howard - 1 IP, 5 H, 6 R, 6 ER, 2 BB, K, 2 WP, 2 GB, 0 FB
Nick Maton - 1 for 5, 2 R, HR, 2 RBI, SB
Josh Stephen - 1 for 5, R, 3B, 2 RBI
Jhailyn Ortiz - 1 for 4, 2 R, 2B, BB
Greg Pickett - 0 for 3, R, 2 BB
Yahir Gurrola - 2 for 5, 2B, HR, 4 RBI, K
Cole Stobbe - 1 for 3, RBI, 2 BB, SB
Brian Mims - 1 for 4, R, 2 K
Nerluis Martinez - 1 for 4, K
Malvin Matos - 1 for 4, R, 2 K

Williamsport was down 8-4 entering the top of the 9th inning, where they would go on to score 5 runs to regain the lead. Nick Maton (2) and Yahir Gurrola (1) both had dingers in the comeback inning. This was just Yahir Gurrola’s 2nd game in Williamsport after slashing .333/.437/.390 in 105 at-bats in the GCL.

GCL Phillies 9, GCL Blue Jays 2

Jose Jimenez - 5 IP, 4 H, 2 R, 2 ER, 3 BB, 5 K, 5 GB, 3 FB
Kevin Markham - 2 for 5, 3 R, RBI, BB (outfield assist, 3B)
Jake Holmes - 3 for 5, 2 R, 2B, RBI, BB

Gunnar Buhner - 1 for 4, R, 2B, BB
