Phillies Minor League Roundup for 8/7

MLB: Spring Training-New York Yankees at Philadelphia Phillies Kim Klement-USA TODAY Sports

Today’s Probables:

LHV: Brandon Leibrandt
REA: Tyler Viza
CLR: Seranthony Dominguez
LWD: Nick Fanti
WIL: Kyle Young

Norfolk 4, Lehigh Valley 2

Jake Thompson - 5.1 IP, 8 H, 3 R, 3 ER, 2 BB, 5 K, 2 WP, 3 GB, 6 FB
Scott Kingery - 1 for 5, R, 3B, K
J.P. Crawford - 2 for 4, R, 2B, RBI, BB, K, SB
Rhys Hoskins - 2 for 5, RBI, 2 K, SB
Dylan Cozens - 1 for 4, BB, 2 K
Andrew Pullin - 1 for 3, 2B, BB, K

The game should have likely been a higher scoring affair for both teams as they left a combined 22 runners on base. Jake Thompson took the loss, though I should note that Pat Venditte let two of his inherited runners score. As I’m sure all of you have heard by now, Rhys Hoskins played LF last night for the first time since his College(TM) days. By my count he fielded all 4 put-outs cleanly last night, all the while having a multi-hit night and stealing his 4th base of the season. I’m not a fan of the Phillies strategy for this positional move (I’m all for ending Joseph’s reign in Philly for full disclosure). Oh yeah, that guy that everyone said was a bust and won’t be good had another multi-hit night and is OPSing 1.027 with 10 HR and 2 SB in his last 122 at-bats. I’ll let you all guess who that is in the comments.

Akron 6, Reading 2

Tommy Bergjans - 5.1 IP, 7 H, 4 R, 3 ER, 2 BB, 3 K, HR, WP, HBP, 3 GB, 7 FB
Angelo Mora - 2 for 3, 2B, BB, K
Carlos Tocci - 2 for 4, RBI, K
Kyle Martin - 0 for 4, 2 K (fielding error)
Cord Sandberg - 1 for 4, RBI, K
Malquin Canelo - 0 for 4, K

Tommy Bergjans either isn’t very good, or is likely still hurt even after spending much of the first half of the season on the DL. The offense struck out 12 times and went 2 for 9 with RISP. I’m still not sure what Greg Legg is thinking with continuing to bat Kyle Martin (of hitting just .192 on the season) in the cleanup spot almost every night, but hey I’m not a baseball manager. Carlos Tocci is basically a man among boys, despite still being a boy. He is slashing .317/.371/.412 in nearly 400 AA at-bats. I think its safe to say he needs a new challenge.

Tampa 13, Clearwater 11

Edgar Garcia - 4.2 IP, 6 H, 6 R, 6 ER, 2 BB, 3 K, HR, 3 WP, 6 GB, 4 FB
Mark Laird - 2 for 5, 2 R, 2 K
Jose Gomez - 1 for 4, 2B, BB, K (fielding error)
Cornelius Randolph - 1 for 4, R, 2 RBI, 2 K, CS
Wilson Garcia - 2 for 5, 2 R, RBI
Jan Hernandez - 1 for 4, R, 3B, 2 RBI, BB, 2 K, CS
Jose Pujols - 1 for 4, BB
Edgar Cabral - 2 for 3, 2 R, HR, 2 RBI, BB, K, HBP (throwing error)

Both teams hammered for 24 hits total in the game. The loss fell to Luke Leftwich, who combined with Blake Quinn to give up 7 earned runs in their 3.1 innings of work. Edgar Cabral hit his first HR with Clearwater since being promoted. Though he’s hit safely in 7 of his last 10 games, Cornelius Randolph is batting just .216.

West Virginia 8, Lakewood 2

Anthony Requena - 5 IP, 3 H, 1 R, 1 ER, 4 K, 5 GB, 3 FB
Daniel Brito - 1 for 4, 2 K
Raul Rivas - 0 for 4, K
Colby Fitch - 0 for 4, K
Darick Hall - 2 for 3, R, 2B, HBP
Austin Listi - 1 for 3, R, 2B, K
Gregori Rivero - 1 for 4, 2B, 2 RBI, K
David Martinelli - 0 for 3, BB, 2 K
Luke Williams - 0 for 3, K
Jesus Alastre - 0 for 2, BB, 2 K

Anthony Requena takes the hard-luck loss, leaving the game with a 1-0 deficit. Jonathan Hennigan would relieve him the following inning and promptly give up 5 runs. The offense was 1 for 5 with RISP and left 5 on base. This game was boring, the end.

Williamsport, Auburn (ppd due to wet grounds)

GCL Pirates 3, GCL Phillies 2

Manuel Silva - 5 IP, 1 H, 0 R, BB, 3 K, 7 GB, 4 FB
Simon Muzziotti - 1 for 5
Jonathan Guzman - 1 for 3, R, BB
Rafael Marchan - 1 for 4 (two passed balls)
Quincy Nieporte - 1 for 5, RBI
Ben Pelletier - 2 for 4
Yahir Gurrola - 1 for 4, R, SB
Brayan Gonzalez - 2 for 3, 2B, RBI, BB, K
Kevin Markham - 0 for 4
D.J. Stewart - 1 for 3, BB
