I woke up today with a plan, and that plan was to bang out a few different posts about highlights from the last 24 hours. And then I looked at my notes from last night’s game and realized that what I needed to do was a separate highlights post, because holy crap guys THIS TEAM IS AWESOME.
First, please read Justin Klugh’s excellent recap of last night’s game.
Nick Pivetta caught a ball in his shirt
Nick Pivetta had a tough start to last night’s ballgame, giving up two home runs in two batters. But he rebounded so nicely.
Nick Pivetta's night, in two acts:

1st two batters... 2 HRs
After... 6 IP, 2 H, 0 R, 8 Ks
And in the sixth inning, he was faced with a comeback liner that was aimed directly at the center mass of his body. So he did the only thing he could do:

He curled himself forward and took the blast of the baseball, which came at him so hard that it actually squeezed between the buttons of his jersey. It was weird and wonderful and yet so emblematic of this team over the last month: weird and wonderful.
J.P. Crawford made a fantastic play ::swoon::
Our man J.P. has played all over the infield in his few weeks in the majors, and he’s been really impressive everywhere he’s defended. And last night he made a superb play at third base.

I mean holy crap. And I love that Rhys Hoskins has his glove up in the air to catch that and then just keeps it there, like he’s celebrating the pure awesomeness of that play. I love these guys. I love them so much.
OH ALSO AARON ALTHERR HIT A GRAND SLAM OFF OF CLAYTON KERSHAW
HOLY CRAP.
good morning. Aaron Altherr hit a grand slam off of Clayton Kershaw last night. pic.twitter.com/vZOOueuOxJ

AAAAAAHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH. THAT HAPPENED, THAT REALLY HAPPENED!!!!!
Congratulations, Aaron Altherr. You just hit the first grand slam allowed by Clayton Kershaw in his career. No Jim Palmer for him.

Amidst last night’s craziness, the Phanatic did something... weird.

So that’s a little dark.
Song of the day
Last Christmas, my dad gave me and my two younger sisters a list he made of all of his favorite songs, which was nearly 300 in all (and each one had a one line comment from him, it was an incredible gift). Growing up, we’d go down to the basement and dance around to his collection of 45s, and it seriously informed my musical taste. The list he gave us was at least 25% songs that are on my own personal favorite songs list, and the rest are ones I love dearly. Last night I made a playlist out of his top 50, and so I had a hard time choosing a song this morning. I settled on this one.
God I love that song. I just love it.
