Phillies MLR 4/19/18: Adonis Medina struggles again

ALSO: Cord Sandberg’s three-hit performance not enough, Moniak and Gamboa combine for five hits and Jhailyn Ortiz might be figuring things out.

Today’s probable starters:

LHV: Cole Irvin
REA: Franklyn Kilome
CLR: McKenzie Mills
LWD: Spencer Howard

Harrisburg 4, Reading 3

Jacob Waguespack: 6 IP, 6 H, 3 R (3 ER), 3 BB, 3 K, HBP, 9 GB, 2 FB
Cord Sandberg: 3 for 5, R, HR, 2 RBI, BB, K
Malquin Canelo: 1 for 6, 2 K
Damek Tomscha: 1 for 5
Kyle Martin: 0 for 2, 3 BB
Jiandido Tromp: 2 for 3, R, 2 BB, K
Cornelius Randolph: 1 for 4, K
Deivi Grullon: 0 for 4, RBI, BB, 3 K (throwing error)
Zach Green: 0 for 1
Zach Coppola: 0 for 2, BB, 2 K

Reading lost the fourth game against Harrisburg on a walk-off single in the tenth to split the series. Jacob Waguespack settled down after a two-run first inning and got some late help from his offense to take a no decision. Cord Sandberg and Jiandido Tromp had nice showings at the plate. The offense, in general, was decent, racking up ten hits. They just were not able to push runs across, going 2 for 15 with runners in scoring position. Also, make it six straight scoreless relief appearances to start the season for Edgar Garcia.

Charlotte 10, Clearwater 3

Adonis Medina: 1.2 IP, 3 H, 6 R (6 ER), 3 BB, K, HBP, 1 GB, 3 FB (two wild pitches)
Mickey Moniak: 3 for 5
Arquimedes Gamboa: 2 for 4, 3B, RBI, BB
Adam Haseley: 0 for 4, K
Darick Hall: 0 for 2, K
Austin Listi: 1 for 4, K
Wilson Garcia: 0 for 4 (catcher interference)
Jose Pujols: 1 for 4, R, HR, RBI, 2 K (fielding error)
Luke Williams: 1 for 3, R, RBI, K
Jose Gomez: 1 for 4
Danny Mayer: 0 for 1, R, K

Make it two straight starts for Adonis Medina where he did not last very long in the ballgame. It took him 50 pitches to get through 1.2 innings and he walked three. It’s nice to see the Moniak-Gamboa duo combining for five hits, one walk and no strikeouts. Mickey got back up to Mendoza line; hopefully he can continue to pull away from that. In the end, the Threshers suffered their second consecutive loss via blowout.

Lakewood 4, Delmarva 3

Will Stewart: 5 IP, 6 H, 3 R (3 ER), BB, 3 K, 8 GB, 3 FB (wild pitch; balk)
Dalton Guthrie: 1 for 4, R, 2B, BB
Kevin Markham: 1 for 4, R, K
Jhailyn Ortiz: 2 for 4, 2 R, 2 2B, RBI, K
Quincy Nieporte: 1 for 3, RBI
Jake Scheiner: 2 for 4, 2B, 3B, RBI
Daniel Brito: 0 for 3, BB, K (fielding error)
Gregori Rivero: 1 for 4
Rodolfo Duran: 0 for 4, K (two passed balls)
Yahir Gurrola: 0 for 4, K

Jhailyn Ortiz has a great night at the plate for a second consecutive evening, this time doubling twice and driving in two. He still isn’t walking all that much, but for the time being I think we can live with him driving the ball. 2017 fourth round selection Jake Scheiner also knocked two extra-base hits and drove in a run. Will Stewart allowed his first runs of the year after throwing two scoreless outings to start the season.
