Game Thread 5/22: Braves at Phillies

Wake up people; the Phillies aren’t getting swept by the Braves.

MLB: Atlanta Braves at Philadelphia Phillies Bill Streicher-USA TODAY Sports

The Braves’ “likability’ couldn’t stop Nick Pivetta and the Phillies from shutting them down after their arrival in Philadelphia on Monday night.

Game one of this huge series for first place in the NL East had every narrative clicking: Pivetta, making the Jonathan Papelbon trade look even more ludicrous; a switcheroo as Nick Williams got the start and Aaron Altherr came on the pinch hit, only for both of them to hit home runs; Odubel Herrera begin another on-base streak; Jorge Alfaro’s smoking defense; another clean inning from Seranthony Dominguez; a save for the struggling Hector Neris with absolutely no base runners; and the Braves trying to get cute as Ender Inciarte tried to bunt his way on in Atlanta’s last at-bat to start a miraculous comeback, only to be erased by Alfaro at first by a throw traveling 900 mph.

Game two and Vince Veaslquez have a lot to live up to.
