FanPost Friday: What’s your earliest Phillies memory?

What is the earliest and best memory you have of the Phillies?

Von Hayes

I know, I know, many of you saw that picture of ole’ “5 for 1” Von Hayes and promptly groaned. There is a lot of disappointment and hate for Hayes, but for this author, he was my hero. For some reason, I loved the guy. I grew up wearing black batting gloves when everyone else wore white, I tried hitting left handed even though I am a natural righty and always tried to get number 9 on any team I was on. Many fans scoff at this idea, perpetually reminded of how “bad” Hayes was while in Philadelphia (pssst....he was actually pretty good here).

I think Hayes is still with me so much because his two two-run home run game is the earliest memory I have of the Phillies. It happened on June 8, 1989, two days after my birthday so I recall that game vividly. It was the famous “If the Pirates lose this game, I’ll walk back to Pittsburgh” game where announcer John Rooker had to eat crow when the Pirates blew a 10 run first inning lead, losing 15-11. Ever since then, Von Hayes was my favorite player.

With that in mind, I bring to you the masses: what is your earliest/best memory of the Phillies? Is it a specific game? A specific play? Is there a piece of memorabilia that triggers something in your mind (for me, it’s this)? Head on over to the FanPost section and write up your memories for us to read. The best one goes up on the main page.
