Buffalo 4, Lehigh Valley 3 (10 innings)
Jacob Waguespack - 6 IP, 3 H, 1 R, 1 ER, 2 BB, 4 K, 7 GB, 6 FB
Mitch Walding - 0 for 3, R, BB, 2 K
Dylan Cozens - 1 for 4, HR, 3 RBI, 2 K
Zach Green - 0 for 4, K
It’s surprising that Jacob Waguespack even knows what team he is on anymore after 5 times of being promoted/demoted between AAA and AA. Last night was one of this best across both leagues. The 24 year old righty has a 4.64 ERA and 64 strikeouts to 30 walks in 66 combined innings this season. Dylan Cozens made his return to the minor leagues and subsequently hit his 11th HR of the year, a 3-run shot in the 6th inning to give the IronPigs a 3-1 lead. Between Yacksel Rios, Zac Curtis and some bad defense, Buffalo was able to tie it in the 7th and force extra innings. Jake Thompson took the loss. Zach Green made his AAA debut last night playing 1st base. Damek Tomscha was sent back down to Reading in a corresponding move.
Bowie 7, Reading 5
Tyler Viza - 5 IP, 7 H, 1 R, 1 ER, BB, K, WP, 7 GB, 2 FB
Malquin Canelo - 0 for 4, BB, 2 K
Adam Haseley - 1 for 4, R, K
Austin Listi - 1 for 4, K
Darick Hall - 3 for 4, 2 R, HR, 2 RBI
Damek Tomscha - 2 for 4, R
Cornelius Randolph - 0 for 4
Jan Hernandez - 0 for 3, R, BB, K (throwing error)
Austin Bossart - 1 for 4, 2B, 3 RBI, K
Tyler Viza gets a spot start again and doesn’t suck! He received run support via a Jan Hernandez bases-loaded 3-run double in the 2nd. Reading would tack on a couple more runs, with one being Darick Hall’s 10th HR with the Fightins (and 21st overall on the season). Adam Haseley was promoted and made his AA debut playing centerfield. He singled in his second at-bat. Reading held a 5-1 lead entering the top of the 9th. Jeff Singer then promptly gave up 6 runs in 2⁄3 of an inning. It was his second loss since being promoted to AA.
Dunedin 3, Clearwater 0
Mauricio Llovera - 5 IP, 6 H, 2 R, 2 ER, 2 BB, 4 K, HR, 2 HBP, 5 GB, 2 FB
Jose Gomez - 1 for 4, K
Luke Williams - 1 for 4
Henri Lartigue - 0 for 4, 2 K
Jose Pujols - 0 for 4, 2 K
Mickey Moniak - 1 for 4, 2B, 2 K
Edgar Cabral - 0 for 4, 2 K (throwing error)
Kyle Martin - 0 for 3, 2 K
Grenny Cumana - 2 for 3 (outfield assist, home)
Raul Rivas - 2 for 3 (fielding error)
Mauricio Llovera gets little offensive support despite the above-average performance. Mickey Moniak had the team’s only extra-base hit. The Threshers went 0 for 7 with RISP and failed to work a walk all the while collectively striking out 11 times. Jose Pujols is going through a bit of a cold streak, hitting only .171 in his last 11 games and striking out 31% of the time.
Lakewood 4, Asheville 1 (GM1 of DH, 7 innings)
Lakewood 5, Asheville 2 (GM2 of DH, 7 innings, makeup of 7/11 ppd)
Spencer Howard - 7 IP, 3 H, 1 R, 1 ER, BB, 8 K, HR, WP, 6 GB, 4 FB
Damon Jones - 6 IP, 8 H, 2 R, 2 ER, 8 K, WP, 6 GB, 2 FB (pickoff error)
Simon Muzziotti - 2 for 7, 3 R, RBI, SB
Jake Scheiner - 2 for 3, 2 R, HR
Nick Maton - 0 for 1, R, BB, HBP (fielding error)
Jhailyn Ortiz - 2 for 6, 2B, 2 RBI
Rodolfo Duran - 0 for 2, RBI, K
Matt Vierling - 2 for 5, 2 2B, RBI, BB, 2 K
Edwin Rodriguez - 1 for 6, R, RBI
Dalton Guthrie - 2 for 5, R
Jose Antequera - 1 for 4, K, CS, HBP (throwing error)
Daniel Brito - 2 for 3, BB
Colby Fitch - 1 for 3, 2 RBI, K
Josh Stephen - 1 for 2, R, BB, K
These are the kind of starts that have me all hot and bothered about Spencer Howard and his potential. The stuff remains great, but the command is still very spotty between starts. The 7 innings last night was a career-high since being drafted last year. His 11.2 K/9 is best among starters with more than 20 IP. That Damon Jones kid also seems to be doing quite well for himself. He lowered his ERA to 2.21 while picking up his 7th win of the season. Jake Scheiner hit his 10th HR of the season in the first game of the DH last night.
Tri-City 5, Williamsport 3
Ethan Lindow - 5 IP, 5 H, 2 R, 2 ER, 3 BB, 9 K, HR, 2 GB, 2 FB
Jonathan Guzman - 1 for 5, R, K
Ben Aklinski - 1 for 3, R, BB
Madison Stokes - 1 for 3, 3B, 2 RBI, BB, K
Ben Pelletier - 0 for 3, K (outfield assist, 2B)
Matt Kroon - 1 for 2, BB, HBP
Jesus Henriquez - 0 for 3, RBI, K
Brayan Gonzalez - 0 for 3, K, HBP
Jesse Wilkening - 0 for 4, K
Seth Lancaster - 0 for 4, 2 K
Ethan Lindow gets his first loss of the season, but his ERA still sits at 2.49 through 5 starts. He is also sporting a modest 23:7 K/BB. The outcome of the game looks much closer than it was. The Crosscutters cut the lead from 5-0 with a 3-run 8th inning. Our old pal Luis Encarnacion was playing for Tri-City and hit his 3rd homer of the season, though he also happens to be hitting .167 in 54 at-bats (not much changes, huh?).
