Baseball Betsy

Today’s Probables:

LHV: Jacob Waguespack (12:05 start on MiLB.tv)
REA: Tyler Viza
CLR: Felix Paulino
LWD: Julian Garcia (11:00am start on MiLB.tv)
WIL: Jhordany Mezquita

Lehigh Valley 3, Columbus 1

Cole Irvin - 6 IP, 3 H, 0 R, BB, 3 K, HBP, 6 GB, 6 FB
Mitch Walding - 0 for 3, BB, K
Joey Meneses - 2 for 4, HR
Dylan Cozens - 0 for 4, 3 K

The lefty Cole Irvin turns in another stellar start. Could he be the starter that finally breaks the Phillies lefty-less rotation streak? His ERA is down to 2.73. Joey Meneses hit his 16th HR of the season last night. Lehigh Valley scored 2 runs in the top of the 8th to give them the lead. The IronPigs have a 6.5 game lead in the North Division.

Reading 6, Hartford 3

Franklyn Kilome - 6.2 IP, 6 H, 2 R, 2 ER, 3 BB, 5 K, 3 GB, 4 FB
Malquin Canelo - 1 for 5
Adam Haseley - 1 for 4, BB
Damek Tomscha - 1 for 5, RBI, K
Darick Hall - 0 for 5
Deivi Grullon - 1 for 4, HR, 2 K
Cornelius Randolph - 1 for 3, R, 2B, BB (outfield assist, 2B)
Jan Hernandez - 1 for 3, 2 R, HR, 2 RBI, BB

Franklyn Kilome’s final start in the Phillies organization? Who knows! It was a good one and on top of that he was 2 for 3 at the plate with two doubles. Deivi Grullon got the scoring started with a solo HR in the 2nd, his 13th of the season. Jan Hernandez added a 2-run blast in the 4th, his 11th. Also, don’t look now...but Cornelius Randolph is streaking! In his last 12 games he is slashing .372/.471/.442 with 8 walks to 6 strikeouts. We’ll take anything from Yukon at this point.

Clearwater 6, Daytona 2

Alejandro Requena - 6 IP, 5 H, 1 R, 1 ER, BB, 8 K, 6 GB, 4 FB (throwing error)
Jose Gomez - 0 for 4, K
Luke Williams - 2 for 4, HR, 3 RBI, K (outfield assist, 2B)
Henri Lartigue - 1 for 3, 2 R, HR, BB
Jose Pujols - 2 for 4, HR, 2 RBI, K
Arquimedes Gamboa - 1 for 3, BB, K
Edgar Cabral - 2 for 4, 2B
Kyle Martin - 1 for 4, K
Raul Rivas - 1 for 4, R, 2 K
Kevin Markham - 2 for 4, R

Alejandro Requena has been impressive since returning from injury. In 4 starts for Clearwater he’s pitched 22 innings have given up only 8 earned runs on 17 hits and 5 walks, but has struck out 27 while doing so. Requena was a get in the Pat Neshek trade last season. He got a lot of run support via the dinger last night. Luke Williams (9), Henri Lartigue (6) and Jose Pujols (13) all put one in the seats yesterday. Speaking of Luke Williams, something surely has clicked for the now third baseman/left-fielder. Over his last 46 games he is slashing .319/.370/.524 with 8 HR and 7 SB. The fact he is only hitting .253 overall on the season kind of points to how bad an April he he had.

Columbia 2, Lakewood 0 (GM1 of DH, 7 innings)
Lakewood 12, Columbia 6 (GM2 of DH, 7 innings, makeup of 7/15 ppd)

Gustavo Armas - 7 IP, 4 H, 2 R, 2 ER, BB, 5 K, HR, 11 GB, 3 FB
Will Stewart - 5 IP, 8 H, 1 R, 1 ER, BB, 3 K, 10 GB, 1 FB
Simon Muzziotti - 0 for 3
Jake Scheiner - 1 for 5, 3 R, 2B, 2 RBI, 2 BB, 2 K
Nick Maton - 1 for 5, 2 R, 3B, RBI, BB, K, HBP
Jhailyn Ortiz - 3 for 7, 3 R, 2 2B, HR, 2 RBI, K
Quincy Nieporte - 1 for 6, R, 2B, 2 RBI, BB, 2 K
Josh Stephen - 1 for 6, 2B, 2 RBI, BB, K
Gregori Rivero - 1 for 3, K
Dalton Guthrie - 0 for 1, BB
Jose Antequera - 1 for 4, RBI, BB
Daniel Brito - 4 for 4, 2 R, 2B, RBI, 3 SB
Matt Vierling - 0 for 4, 2 K
Colby Fitch - 1 for 3, R, BB, 2 K

Lakewood splits the doubleheader and remain a half-game out of 1st place in the 2nd half standings. Gustavo Armas makes his 2018 Lakewood debut last night with mostly positive results. Armas had 30 innings in Lakewood last season to the tune of a 6.00 ERA. Will Stewart grabbed his 7th win of the season and saw his ERA rise slightly to 1.28. Jhailyn Ortiz mashed his 10th HR of the season. Since returning from injury, Ortiz is slashing .268/.310/.459 with 9 HR.

Williamsport 4, Brooklyn 2

James McArthur - 4 IP, 1 H, 0 R, BB, 5 K, 4 GB, 2 FB
Jonathan Guzman - 0 for 5
Rafael Marchan - 2 for 5, R, SB
Madison Stokes - 2 for 5, R, K
Ben Pelletier - 2 for 4, 2B, 3B, 2 RBI
Ben Aklinski - 1 for 4, R
Danny Mayer - 3 for 4, 2 2B
Matt Kroon - 0 for 3, R, BB, K
Jesus Henriquez - 2 for 4, 3B, 2 RBI, K
Brayan Gonzalez - 0 for 4, 2 K

The big righty (6’7, 230 lbs) James McArthur, drafted out of the 12th round of the 2018 draft, keeps ramping up his innings. In 10 innings across both Williamsport and the GCL Phillies, he has given up 2 runs on 5 hits and 4 walks, while striking out 11 batters. Rafael Marchan continues to impress. He is slashing .307/.351/.364 with 9 SB in 88 at-bats in his first season in the NY/Penn League as a 19 year old.
