Phillies Minor League Roundup for 7/30/18

Charlie Manuel

Today’s Probables:

LHV: Ranger Suarez
REA: Ranfi Casimiro
CLR: Anthony Requena
LWD: Spencer Howard
WIL: Ethan Lindow

Lehigh Valley 2, Buffalo 0

Tom Eshelman - 7 IP, 4 H, 0 R, BB, 5 K, 7 GB, 4 FB
Jesmuel Valentin - 0 for 2, R, 2 BB, K
Mitch Walding - 0 for 4, K
Joey Meneses - 1 for 4, HR, 2 RBI, K
Dylan Cozens - 0 for 3, BB, 2 K, CS
Aaron Altherr - 1 for 3, K, SB
Zach Green - 0 for 3, 2 K

Maybe, just maybe Tom Eshelman is fixing things. This is now 3 straight starts in which he has given up 2 runs or less. His ERA (5.58) is now the lowest its been since the beginning of April. The IronPigs offense was actually out-hit 5-3 in the game. The lone runs were scored via Joey Meneses 2-run HR in the 1st inning, his 18th HR of the season. His season line is up to .310/.359/.527 in 364 AAA at-bats. Meneses could be an interesting 40-man roster add in September. Meanwhile, Zach Green has struggled thus far adjusting to the next level. He is 10 for 51 and has seen his OPS drop to .577.

Lakewood 7, Delmarva 4

Julian Garcia - 5 IP, 4 H, 2 R, 2 ER, 3 BB, 6 K, WP, 3 GB, 3 FB
Daniel Brito - 1 for 3, 2 RBI, BB, K
Simon Muzziotti - 0 for 5 (outfield assist, 2B)
Jhailyn Ortiz - 0 for 4, BB, 4 K
Colby Fitch - 2 for 4, HR, 2 RBI, BB, K
Rodolfo Duran - 1 for 5, 2B, 2 K
Quincy Nieporte - 1 for 4, R, K
Josh Stephen - 1 for 3, 2 R, 2B, BB, SB
Dalton Guthrie - 0 for 3, R, 2 K, HBP
Jose Antequera - 2 for 2, R, 2B, 2 BB, SB

Julian Garcia made his 3rd start of the season last night. He picked up his 5th win and has looked excellent in the starter role after 20 appearances as a reliever to start the season. The offense battled back down 2-1 with a huge 4-run 6th inning. Colby Fitch hit a 2-run HR, his 4th of the season. Jhailyn Ortiz’s struggles are real, batting .103 in his last 10 games (4 for 39 with 20 K’s).

Williamsport 4, Mahoning Valley 1

Jhordany Mezquita - 4.1 IP, 4 H, 1 R, 1 ER, BB, 5 K, HR, HBP, 3 GB, 2 FB
Ben Aklinski - 0 for 5
Rafael Marchan - 2 for 4, R, 2 2B
Madison Stokes - 3 for 4, 2 R
Edwin Rodriguez - 2 for 4, R, 2B, 3B, 3 RBI
Ben Pelletier - 0 for 4, 2 K
Jesus Henriquez - 0 for 3, RBI
Brayan Gonzalez - 1 for 4, 2B
Seth Lancaster - 0 for 3, BB, 2 K
Keudy Bocio - 0 for 3, BB, K

Jhordany Mezquita doesn’t factor into the decision, but pumps out another good appearance. He has 31 strikeouts in 28 innings this season (the 13 walks however are less than ideal). Rafael Marchan continues to dominate with the bat. The 19 year old catcher is sporting a .315/.353/.371 line with 9 stole bases. He doesn’t have a huge frame, so power will likely never be there, but man having that kind of contact I would imagine is rare for a young catcher in the NY/Penn League.
