Phillies MLR 6/12/19: Do we need to start paying more attention to Mauricio Llovera?

Phillies Minor League Roundup for 6/12/19

Reading Park HolyKrukingSchmidt

Today’s Probables:

LHV: TBD
REA: Adonis Medina
CLR: TBD
LWD: Francisco Morales

Lehigh Valley 3, Gwinnett 2

Drew Anderson - 5 IP, 4 H, 2 R, 2 ER, 6 K, HBP, 3 GB, 3 FB
Jan Hernandez - 0 for 3, BB, 3 K
Deivy Grullon - 2 for 4, R, 2B, K
Mitch Walding - 1 for 3, BB
Malquin Canelo - 1 for 4, K

Lehigh Valley hung in there and delivered a come from behind victory with a 9th inning walk-off. They were down 2-0 in the 7th and scored runs in each of the 7th, 8th and 9th innings. Ali Castillo delivered the game-winning single, scoring Lane Adams who had gotten on base with a one-out double. Deivy Grullon had his first multi-hit game since May 31. Hopefully he will get back on track. Drew Anderson pitched well, but obviously didn’t get the win. It was his first start this season where he didn’t walk a batter.

Erie 2, Reading 1

Mauricio Llovera - 6 IP, 6 H, 2 R, 2 ER, 2 BB, 8 K, HBP, 2 GB, 4 FB
Arquimedes Gamboa - 0 for 4, 2 K
Josh Stephen - 1 for 3, BB, K
Mickey Moniak - 1 for 4, 2B, 3 K
Darick Hall - 0 for 4, 2 K
Austin Listi - 3 for 4, HR, K
Cornelius Randolph - 0 for 3, 2 K
Grenny Cumana - 2 for 3, CS (fielding error)

Mauricio Llovera is the hard-luck loser in this one despite the above-average performance. The 23 year old righty has a 4.28 ERA with 57 strikeouts to 22 walks in 48.1 innings this season. He is definitely a candidate in the coming weeks for a AAA promotion. Mickey Moniak hasn’t had a multi-strikeout game since May 29th. However, he hit is 16th double of the season, which leads all Reading hitters. Austin Listi has been much better than his overall line following an absolutely brutal April. Since May he is slashing .289/.376/.521 with 7 HR.

Clearwater 7, St. Lucie 2 (6 innings)

Julian Garcia - 6 IP, 3 H, 2 R, 2 ER, 4 BB, 5 K, HR, WP, 3 GB, 5 FB
Roman Quinn - 2 for 3, 2 R, 2B, BB, K
Alec Bohm - 2 for 4, 2 R, RBI
Jhailyn Ortiz - 2 for 4, R, 2 2B, 2 RBI
Madison Stokes - 2 for 4, K
Rodolfo Duran - 1 for 1
Daniel Brito - 0 for 3, 2 K

Julian Garcia has been really good of late, lowering his ERA to 3.15 following the game. He has 63 strikeouts to 18 walks in 60 innings this season. At 24 he is a bit old for the level, but with the backlog of starters in Reading there isn’t really room for him to be promoted at the moment. Roman Quinn hopefully making one of his final rehab starts. He’s gone 6 for 10 with two doubles and a stolen base in three games with Clearwater. Alec Bohm remains consistent and impressive, sporting a .313/.374/.476 line in 147 at-bats since being promoted to Clearwater.

Lakewood 9, Hagerstown 4

Jhordany Mezquita - 4.1 IP, 5 H, 2 R, 2 ER, 2 BB, 5 K, HR, 2 WP, 1 GB, 4 FB
Dominic Pipkin - 3 IP, 3 H, 0 R, BB, 6 GB, 1 FB
Jonathan Guzman - 1 for 6, 2 RBI
Rafael Marchan - 2 for 5, R, 2B
Luis Garcia - 1 for 4, R, 3B, RBI, BB, 2 K
Abraham Gutierrez - 2 for 3, 2B, RBI, 2 BB
Carlos De La Cruz - 1 for 5, 2 R
Malvin Matos - 1 for 3, R, BB, K
Ben Pelletier - 2 for 5, R, 2B, 2 RBI, K
Cole Stobbe - 2 for 4, 2 R, 2B, 3B, 3 RBI, BB, K

Lakewood pumping out hits and runs is a rare event, lets all take this in. Each batter last night had at least one hit and overall they compiled 13 of them. They were 6 for 19 with RISP and left 10 on base. Dominic Pipkin got the win to improve to 3-0 and lowering his ERA to 3.29. The walks are still not good (21 in 41 IP) and the strikeouts should probably be a bit higher (27), but the 19 year old is holding his own. Ben Pelletier is now riding a four-game hitting streak and Rafael Marchan and Abraham Gutierrez have back-to-back multi-hit games.
