In one of our biggest celebrations of the Philadelphia Phillies, every week the members of The Good Phight will be issuing one of baseball’s greatest achievements to date: The Good Phil of the Week Award. One MLB player and one MiLB player will receive the award each week and will be able to boast to their teammates that they are, in fact, a Good Phil.
Major League Good Phil of the Week: Scott Kingery
This one is as easy as hitting a home run off Phillies pitching. The Scott Kingery breakout week (and season) we’ve all been waiting for has finally arrived. Four home runs- yes, you read that correctly- FOUR home runs this week for Scotty Jetpax. Add in a .500 batting average and multiple instances of brilliant baserunning, and this one is a slam dunk. He deserves a defensive nod as well, since he’s pulling double-duty as the team’s primary option at both center field and third base. Can we just clone him a few times? That could potentially solve a few problems.
What TGP Says:
Alex Carr: “This man is on an absolute tear. Take that haters!”
Justin Klugh: “At a time when the Phillies are low and their weaknesses have been exposed, Kingery is the last battery with charge in it. If you haven’t voted for him to be in the All-Star Game, you should.”
Schmenkman: “I’d say the best week by any Phillies hitter this season.”
The Smarty Jones: “If he had played like this in 2018, the Phillies might have been a playoff team.”
Other Good Phils getting votes:
Rhys Hoskins (3), JT Realmuto (3), Zach Eflin (2), Jay Bruce, Nick Pivetta, Juan Nicasio
Minor League Good Phil of the Week: Damon Jones
Jones made his Double-A debut this week with Reading and was absolutely brilliant. In six innings pitched he gave up one hit and one earned run while striking out an absurd TWELVE batters against the Harrisburg Senators. Teammate Jakob Hernandez got the win, as Reading took the lead for good after Jones left the game. But wow, what a way to introduce yourself to the Fightins.
Other Minor League Good Phils getting votes:
Adonis Medina, Austin Listi
