Phillies MLR: Alec Bohm hits a bomb, Spencer Howard begins rehab

Phillies Minor League Roundup for 6/27/19

MLB: Colorado Rockies at Philadelphia Phillies Bill Streicher-USA TODAY Sports

Weekend Probables:

LHV: Enyel De Los Santos, Cole Irvin, Ramon Rosso
REA: David Parkinson, Damon Jones, Bailey Falter
CLR: Ethan Evanko, Kyle Glogoski, TBD
LWD: Ethan Lindow, Tyler McKay, Dominic Pipkin
WIL: Jose Conopoima, Leonel Aponte, Rafael Carvajal

Rochester 8, Lehigh Valley 7

Jose Tavares - 2 IP, 2 H, 2 R, 2 ER, BB, 2 K, HBP
Austin Davis - 2 IP, 3 H, 1 R, 1 ER, 4 K (pickoff error)
Kyle Dohy - 2 IP, 3 H, 2 R, 1 ER, 5 K, 3 WP
Jan Hernandez - 0 for 3, R, 2 BB, K
Austin Listi - 2 for 5, R, RBI, 2 K
Deivy Grullon - 1 for 4, HR, BB, K
Nick Williams - 1 for 5, 2B, 3 K
Mitch Walding - 2 for 3, 2 R, 2B, BB, K (fielding error)
Malquin Canelo - 0 for 3, BB, K (fielding error)

A comeback win falls short thanks do a shoddy bullpen. Kyle Dohy took the loss after giving up two runs in the top of the 9th in a 6-6 tie game. Deivy Grullon hit his 11th dinger of the season, a solo shot in the 4th inning. Phil Gosselin delivered his 1st HR of the season, a three-run bomb in the 7th.

Reading 6, Portland 1

JoJo Romero - 5 IP, 5 H, 1 R, 1 ER, 5 K, 5 GB, 3 FB
Adam Haseley - 1 for 4, R, K
Alec Bohm - 2 for 3, 2 R, HR, 2 RBI, BB (throwing error)
Mickey Moniak - 0 for 3, R, BB, K
Darick Hall - 0 for 3, R, BB, K
Cornelius Randolph - 1 for 1, 2 RBI

A...good start from JoJo Romero? Yeah, we’ll take it. This was only the fourth time in 14 starts this season in which he has allowed less than four earned runs in a game. Baby steps, I guess. Alec Bohm put Reading on the board in the 4th inning with a two-run homer, his 2nd with the Fightins and 9th overall this season.

Clearwater 2, Lakeland 1 (11 innings)

Julian Garcia - 7 IP, 5 H, 0 R, BB, 8 K, 4 GB, 3 FB
Matt Vierling - 1 for 5, R, 2 K
Dalton Guthrie - 2 for 5, 3B
Jhailyn Ortiz - 0 for 5, 4 K
Madison Stokes - 1 for 4, BB, 2 K

There wasn’t a whole lot of offensive excitement in this one. No runs were scored in the game until the 11th inning when Luke Miller put the Threshers ahead 2-0 with a two-RBI single. Julian Garcia was once again excellent in the game and is likely close to getting a promotion to AA. The 24 year old righty has a 2.88 ERA with 77 strikeouts to 20 walks in 72 innings this season.

Greensboro 9, Lakewood 8

Kevin Gowdy - 5 IP, 4 H, 1 R, 0 ER, 2 BB, 3 K, 3 GB, 6 FB
James McArthur - 0.2 IP, 5 H, 6 R, 5 ER, 3 BB, K
Jonathan Guzman - 2 for 5, 2 R, 2B, SB
Rafael Marchan - 0 for 4, R (throwing error)
Luis Garcia - 0 for 1
Jake Holmes - 1 for 4, R, 2B, 2 RBI, 3 K (missed catch error)
Carlos De La Cruz - 2 for 5, R, 3 RBI, K (outfield assist, 3B)
Seth Lancaster - 3 for 5, 2B, RBI
Cole Stobbe - 0 for 5, 4 K (throwing error)
Hunter Stovall - 1 for 3, 2 R, 2B, BB
Yerwin Trejo - 2 for 4, R, 2B, RBI, K, 2 SB
Ben Pelletier - 1 for 3, 2B, RBI, K (two outfield assists, 1B & home)

This was a wild one. The BlueClaws held a comfortable 3-1 lead heading into the 6th. James McArthur imploded and by the time they got to the bottom of the 9th, Lakewood was looking at a 9-3 deficit. Unfortunately, a five-run bottom of the 9th proved to be just not enough to secure the comeback. Speaking of Kevin Gowdy, he tied a season-high 5 innings and set a new career-high in pitches thrown in a game with 71. Seth Lancaster, while old for the league, has been great since debuting. He is slashing .438/.412/.688 in 6 games (16 AB). Luis Garcia left the game after the end of the 2nd inning.

Auburn 1, Williamsport 0

Carlos Francisco - 4 IP, 2 H, 0 R, BB, 8 GB, 1 FB
Tom Sutera - 3 IP, 5 H, 1 R, 0 ER, 4 K, 1 GB, 3 FB
Corbin Williams - 1 for 4, 3 K
Nicolas Torres - 0 for 4, K
McCarthy Tatum - 1 for 3, BB, K
Logan O’Hoppe - 0 for 4, K
Nick Matera - 0 for 4, K
DJ Stewart - 1 for 4, 2B, K (throwing error)
Brayan Gonzalez - 1 for 4, 2B, K
Hunter Hearn - 0 for 3, 3 K (outfield assist, 3B)
Christian Valerio - 2 for 3, 2B, K

Turns out a DJ Stewart error in the 6th inning was the only difference in this game featuring strong pitching performances on both sides. The Crosscutter offense went 0 for 9 with RISP and left 7 on base. Williamsport is off to a rough 2-11 start.

GCL Tigers West 5, GCL Phillies East 0
GCL Blue Jays 7, GCL Phillies West 2

The only thing to note in these games was Spencer Howard made his first official rehab start going: 3 IP, 1 H, 0 R, BB, 5 K with 20 strikes on 24 pitches. Matt Winkelman reported that he was around 94-96 on the gun and was able to work all his pitches. All positive signs for the Phillies top pitching prospect.
