The Phillies announce their 30-man roster to begin the season

Remember - this changes in two weeks, then two weeks after that

Today was the day that the team had to submit their final rosters in preparation for the 2020 season. We’ve already had at least one mild surprise with Josh Harrison being granted his release, so it was interesting to see who Joe Girardi would choose to begin the season with. Here is who the team will bring to Philadelphia (remember - in two weeks, the roster size gets cut to 28, then to 26 two weeks after that):

A couple of mild surprises here:

  • Deolis Guerra and Austin Davis making the squad would qualify as surprising, but hey - these might be the first two names off the board
  • Kyle Garlick is also surprising, but his power bat off the bench and as a DH could prove to be pivotal in some games
  • Phil Gosselin, after getting hits in his last, let’s see, 45 at bats didn’t make the team, but really there isn’t anywhere for him to go. The team is loaded with players that can play anywhere in the infield and elimination of the pinch hitter specialist doesn’t help his cause
  • Good for Ramon Rosso. Coming into spring, he’s bumped his velocity up nicely (sitting 96-97 now), so his being a bullpen piece looks like another developmental win

What are your opinions of this roster?
