Let's Solve Some Problems

The universal DH has been a hot button issue. Should it exist or not? Many FA DH hitters are still on the market or have lost opportunities in the NL this offseason. What about the glove-only, light-hitting, defensive players? There always seems to be that one player in a team’s lineup that is the automatic out for most of their ABs. So, if baseball wants a player that just hits, let’s have players that just field.

Let’s use the Phillies as an example. They can use the DH as a rest day for players or give someone like Miller/Kingery/Haseley those ABs. Pitchers stay out of the batter’s box, as they should, and let’s say Roman Quinn just plays CF, for example. Eight batters in the lineup, so they get more ABs over the season, and defense isn’t sacrificed in CF.

How it would probably shake out:

LF McCutchen (R)

1B Hoskins (R)

RF Harper (L)

C Realmuto (R)

SS Gregorius (L)

3B Bohm (R)

2B Segura (R)

DH (mixed in somewhere)

How I would line it up:

C Realmuto (R)

3B Bohm (R)

RF Harper (L)

1B Hoskins (R)

SS Gregorius (L)

LF McCutchen (R)

2B Segura (R)

DH
