Phillies announce changes to the player development department

These feel significant

The Phillies today announced several changes to the player development department.

For a team that has struggled to develop players to turn into significant major league contributors, this is a major shakeup. Dave Dombrowski has spent the majority of this season, in his own words, “observing” the organization. He made a pretty big trade in sending Spencer Howard to Texas for Kyle Gibson and Ian Kennedy, but for the most part, we haven’t really heard much from him.

Now, we can see what he has been looking at.

We’ve written plenty here in these spaces about how depressing it is that the team cannot seem to come up with the homegrown talent needed to grow a big league roster and apparently, Dombrowski agrees. Parting ways with both assistant general managers and the director of player development shows that they are not happy with the direction that has been taken.

Whether there are further changes to the organization remains to be seen, but this is kind of a big deal. We’ll have to wait and see how it goes.
