Phillies announce an extension for Rob Thomson

He’s sticking around for a while longer

MLB: NLCS-Philadelphia Phillies at Arizona Diamondbacks Mark J. Rebilas-USA TODAY Sports

In what might be one of the unsurprising bits of news about the team, the team has announced that Rob Thomson has had his contract extended through the 2025 season.

There is nothing shocking here. The roster he is in charge of obviously loves him, the management all have almost full trust in him and he, quite frankly, hasn’t done anything to even consider changing managers. Are there things to disagree with that he does? Of course. Even John McGraw had his foibles when it came to his on-field management. It comes with the territory. With Thomson, he’s taken two Phillies rosters on deep playoff runs and toppled some very good teams while doing so.

It’s a solid reward for a guy who had planned on retiring from the game after the 2022 season prior his elevation to the managerial job following the firing of Joe Girardi. He’s sticking around and the team is better for it.
