In the culmination of their effort to fix one of the most unbroken things in all of minor league baseball, the Reading Phillies announced today that they will henceforth be known as the Reading Fightins or the Reading Fightin' Phils.

The "rebranding" is complete and the Reading Phillies announced their new name(s) -- the Reading Fightin' Phils.

Here's your logo:

via www.milb.com

The ostrich, of course, is a tribute to the Crazy Hot Dog Vendor, not to Bill Cosby's masterpiece Leonard Part 6.

From the article:

With its fists ready for battle, the new ostrich logo represents the fighting spirit of the franchise, both on and off the field. It will be the first time in the franchise's history that the team will feature an identifiable mascot. The logo is also the first in professional sports to feature an ostrich as its mascot.

Going to go out on a limb and guess there's a reason for that.

The team will also be incorporating more "Baseballtown" elements into its new designs, including a bevy of alternate uniforms designed to provide fans with <strike>all manner of new merchandise to purchase</strike> different ways to identify with their favorite minor league club.

Look, I don't fear change. Okay, maybe a little bit, but only when that "change" is completely unnecessary and represents little more than a money and publicity grab.

Also: This ostrich thing feels like a hoax. Mark this down.

Some curious domain name registrations give a possible look at the Double-A team's soon-to-be-announced moniker. Spoilers ahead.

Mike Drago of the Reading Eagle and Chris Creamer from Sports Logos News both report that their searches of Internet domain registries have revealed that the Reading Phillies Baseball Club purchased the following domains in August.

ReadingFightins.com

FightinsBaseball.com

ReadingFightinPhillies.com

"The Fightins," as well all know, is a classic nickname for the Philadelphia club, as well as a beloved and much missed blog (miss u guys).

This is far from a sure thing, of course, if you think the fellas at Brandiose and the Reading Phillies are capable of subterfuge of this level of sophistication which, to be honest, isn't all that much. Nevertheless, it's a solid lead, and far better than some of the worst names I was imagining.

The Philadelphia Phillies' representative in the Double-A Eastern League will drop the "Phillies" moniker that has belonged to the team for the last 46 seasons as part of a broad "rebranding" effort.

The Reading Phillies have announced that the franchise has decided to jettison the "Phillies" name this month as part of a rebranding process. The new name will be announced in a ceremony of sorts at Reading's FirstEnergy Stadium.

The Philadelphia and Reading Phillies currently have professional baseball's longest standing minor/major league affiliate relationship, with the Reading team using the name "Phillies" for each of the last 46 seasons.

The "rebranding" project will be directed by sports marketing firm Brandiose, who gave us such sensational team names as the Richmond Flying Squirrels and the Phillies' own Lehigh Valley IronPigs.

In case you can't tell, I hate this. I'm not much of a traditionalist about most things, but this literally hits me close to home. I grew up about a half hour from FirstEnergy Stadium (then Reading Municipal Memorial Stadium and later "GPU Stadium"), and spent over a hundred nights in my youth hanging out at the ballpark, hassling guys like Marvin Freeman and Bob Scanlan for autographs, and learning to appreciate funnel cake.

Mike Drago of the Reading Eagle spoke to Reading General Manager Scott Hunsicker, who acknowledged that messing with a long-standing brand is a risky thing:

Hunsicker realizes that it may be a risk tampering with such valued property. That's why the club has moved ahead cautiously over the past 18 months in tackling such an ambitious project.

"This is big, as far as branding a franchise, and doing it properly," he said. "(Reading) is powerful territory for people in my industry. In minor league baseball this is a guarded treasure right here."

So we're messing with a good thing, is what he seems to be saying. This is marketing brilliance.

Here are my suggestions:

Reading Pretzels, for everyone's favorite fattening snack

Reading Rabbits, a bookish tribute to Reading native John Updike's Rabbit Angstrom

Reading New Cokes, to honor the local coal industry
