The good Philadelphia baseball story from last summer -- definitely not the Phillies -- just took an unfortunate turn for the ugly.

Remember last summer, when baseball in Philadelphia was good again? No, I'm not talking about the major league product put on the field by our favorite National League team.

Of course, I'm talking instead about the Taney Dragons. They captured our hearts while breaking down gender barriers and giving us pint-sized heroes to root for.

Their quest for the Little League World Series title came to an end after they fell one win short of the finals. In the double-elimination tournament, they lost in the semi-finals to Las Vegas first and then Chicago second. The Chicago game was a devastatingly close 6-5 game in which the Dragons had the winning runners on first and third with two outs when the Dragons' last batter flied out to end the game.

The underdog Chicago team went on to win the American bracket of the World Series. Given their style of play and that they were also from a big city, the Jackie Robinson West team was a decent fill-in for the Dragons. The sting of the loss for us Dragons' fans felt a little less painful with the Chicago team beating Las Vegas in the American finals.

But today, things changed. Today, we found out that once again adults ruin everything for kids. Overzealous Chicago coaches, managers, and administrators played around with the Chicago league's boundaries to stock the team with the best players from a region far beyond the usual little league boundaries.

The punishment? The manager has been suspended, the administrator has been fired, and painfully for the kids, Little League International has stripped the team of its national championship. It's a terribly sad ending for what was an inspirational story for these kids from Chicago.

Closer to home, today's developments completely flip the feelings of the Dragons' loss in August. Whereas back in August I was one of many Philadelphians who took solace in the Dragons' loss by enjoying the fact that another city team won, today, beyond feeling sorry for the Jackie Robinson West kids, I'm feeling crushed that the Dragons' kids were robbed.

They worked their asses off, played their best, impressed a city and nation, and they wound up being eliminated by a team that cheated. You can't predict alternative realities of what would have happened had Chicago played by the books, but you can say for certain that the Dragons' final loss was not a legitimate one.

It's a terrible way to now look back on what was an otherwise amazing season. Again, the kids I feel the most sorry for today are the kids on Jackie Robinson West. But close behind, it's crushing news for the Dragons as well.

And for us fans, well, at least we now know what it feels like to be a Seattle Seahawks fan after the Super Bowl.

First Spike Lee, now the Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade. There's no other conclusion - Philadelphia's Taney Dragons are taking over New York City.

Someday I'll get back to writing about the Phillies, but as I said this summer, the Taney Dragons are just so much more interesting this year.

And that continues, with today's announcement from the Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade that Mo'ne Davis and the Taney Dragons will not only be featured in the parade but will be kicking it off.

There's not much more to the story than that, but combined with Spike Lee's filiming a documentary and commercial about the Dragons, this is just further proof of the undeniable - Philadelphia's Taney Dragons are taking over New York City.

And it's glorious.

Rumors abound about Spike Lee creating a documentary about the Mo'ne Davis and the Taney Dragons. And maybe there will be a commercial during tonight's World Series game as well.

He's a New Yorker through and through. What's worse, is he's a diehard Yankees fan. But Spike Lee, like us, had the brains to figure out that the most amazing thing in baseball this summer were Mo'ne Davis and the Taney Dragons.

Rumor has it that he has been in Philly to film a documentary about the Davis and the Dragons. From one source:

The film will be focused around the Taney Dragons and their journey to the Little League World Series. The documentary will give viewers a behind the scenes story and look at the team that captured America’s attention this past summer. No word yet on the official release of the film.

Further rumor has it that there may also be a commercial featuring Davis during tonight's World Series game. Be on the lookout.

And, of course, while in Philadelphia, Lee had to snap the obligatory photo of himself and Davis at the Art Museum steps. At least the Rocky statue isn't in the picture!

From one of their Instagrams:

Today, the city, the Phillies, and everyone in the Delaware Valley says thank you to the Taney Dragons for giving us something the Phillies haven't this year - thrilling baseball.

I swear I'll get back to writing about the Phillies soon, but before that happens, I've got one last Taney update for you, as today is the day to honor the team that brought us something our big league team couldn't - thrilling, meaningful August baseball.

Do you have some free time today between 2pm and 4pm and are anywhere near Center City? Come out and celebrate, as Philadelphia is throwing the Taney Dragons a parade! Here's the parade route:

The parade will stop in front of the Kimmel Center for a serenade from the Philly POPS! and at Broad and Washington for a Mummers performance. There will be a rally and some speakers at the end, in FDR Park.

Later in the evening, the Phillies are honoring Taney in a full-team pre-game ceremony. Here's the information from a Taney email yesterday, including a link to discounted tickets through the Phillies (with proceeds going to Taney):

Taney came up just short against Chicago's Jackie Robinson West team, but the baseball awakening the team provided to Philadelphia baseball fans in this somnolent summer of 2014 should not be soon forgotten.

Remember playoff baseball? Remember this?

I'd say it feels like yesterday, but it doesn't. Right now, mostly because the Phillies' descent doesn't seem to be stopping, it feels almost as distant to me as 1980. But for a few weeks in late July and early August this summer, a Philadelphia baseball team gave us that ride again. It happened to be a bunch of 12- and 13-year-olds from Taney Youth Baseball Association, a collection of kids from various parts and backgrounds of Philadelphia that looked like us, played like us, and represented the old city with youthful joy. Since my co-bloglord David S. Cohen first boarded The Good Phight onto the Taney Bandwagon on July 30, we've had... what's that word... oh yeah! FUN watching baseball again.

Their quest to win the 2014 Little League World Series in Williamsport fell short tonight as their comeback attempt against a very similar team from Chicago fell short, 6-5, as the tying run stood a mere 60 feet away as the final batted ball off the bat of Jack Rice fell into the opposing right fielder's glove.

They were uncharacteristically sloppy tonight as they fell behind, committing three errors by making extra throws, some of which sailed wide of their targets and allowed a few of the Chicago runs to score. Perhaps the rain delay caused the ball to be a little slick, a notoriously tricky position to be in when coaching youth baseball.

Still, the details are not much matter. There's no shame in finishing among the top five or six teams in the world, really. When I think of Taney baseball, this comes to mind (missin' u Robin Williams):

It was so fun to watch stellar pitching, crisp hitting. Even the defense was spectacular, especially when you consider the age level. It was even fun, albeit a little quesy toward the end, to watch the media hype machine jump on Mo'ne Davis, Taney's pitching star who just happened to be a ... girl! It was fascinating to watch good coaching, on both sides (of particular note tonight was Jackie Robinson West's coach, whose two mound visits were well-timed and extremely effective in settling his pitchers down in a positive, focused way. Because of the ESPN microphones, we were treated to a bevy of wonderful, inspirational coaching that was positive and respectful. As a youth coach for over 20 years (and one who had to help console my own son's team's championship game loss), I was stunned by the beauty and power of this gem from the Rhode Island coach David Belisle. I mean: Found baseball poetry!

Alas, we now return you to your regularly scheduled baseball season, unfortunately and already in progress. The Phillies are 11.5 games out of the wild card. (There are now two spots, so it's easier even than when they made the playoffs last time.) Kyle Kendrick pitches tomorrow! Huh? Huh? Oh hey! There's a Simpsons marathon on, so there's that.

Thanks Taney, for everything. We loved watching you play. We can't wait for it to happen again in Philadelphia.

(We're looking at you, Phillies.)

Which city's endearingly telegenic young cast of racial/gender/geographic paradigm-challenging baseball players will advance to the United States Championship in the 2014 Little League World Series? In this corner, Chicago's Jackie Robinson West! In the other corner, Philadelphia's Taney!

Tonight at 7:30 ET in Williamsport, PA (broadcast on ESPN), two teams play for the final spot in the 2014 Little League World Series' Final Four: Philadelphia's own Taney Dragons (Mid-Atlantic), and Jackie Robinson West (Great Lakes). The winner will take on Mountain Ridge (Las Vegas) on Saturday at 3:30 p.m. for the U.S. Championship, which in turn will play the winner of the International Bracket, Asia-Pacific or Japan. The loser will be eliminated.

Behold the bracket.

After Taney's 8-1 loss last night to the desert-grown sluggers of Nevada, they'll find themselves unable to use their star pitcher Mo'ne Davis because of pitch count rules. Instead, Jared Sprague-Lott will likely get the start. He'll face an imposing Jackie Robinson West lineup that includes sluggers Pierce Jones, Joshua Huston and Darion Radcliff. Here's some more preview.

Most likely Taney will have to hit their way through to victory, and they've had some trouble recently scoring runs. Good pitching can do that to a lot of teams, amirite, Ruben Amaro Jr.? Here's hoping this wonderful ride continues for this wildly interesting baseball team from Philadelphia (::cough, cough, looks at Phillies). We all could use another few days off from meaningless late-season baseball.

It's now or never, Taney Dragons (and please spare us the indignity of tuning into preseason football)!
After a disheartening loss in last night's game against Mountain Ridge (Las Vegas/West), the Mo'ne Davises Taney Dragons from Philadelphia face an elimination game tonight against Chicago's Jackie Robinson West.

It wasn't a good night for the local kids, as the gargantuan and talented boys from Mountain Ridge (Las Vegas, NV) pinned a loss on Mo'ne Davis and her Taney Dragons team, 8-1, in a six-inning game that lasted over two and a half hours. (Of note: New MLB Commissioner Rob Manfred was there to behold how the last 20 years of endless Red Sox-Yankees games have now ruined Little League as well. I dun tole you: Shock Collars will fix this!) The game was closer than the score might indicate, as Mountain Ridge struck for five of its eight runs in the sixth inning to put the game out of reach after Taney's offense failed to score after promising situations in the fourth and fifth innings. Clearly, the Taney t-shirt that hung in the Phillies dugout yesterday opened a strange vortex into non-productive outs.

Davis didn't appear to have her signature command, and Mountain Ridge was able to drive up her pitch count early. She wasn't helped by some bloop hits and an erratic home plate umpire, but a far bigger factor was her inability to throw inside consistently to tie up the powerful hitters from Nevada.

If you care to, you can replay it all here. If you don't have two and a half hours today, just watch the first few minutes of ESPN2's coverage last night, and you will behold what may be (especially if Taney loses tonight), the apex of the Mo'ne Davis hype machine. I felt uncomfortable watching it, not only for her Taney teammates, but for the Mountain Ridge team, which is stocked with some wonderful players, one of whom is 6'2" at age 13. Remarkable in and of itself, but as a 6'2" myself, I wouldn't have called myself coordinated and 6'2" until my mid-20s. And that's open for some debate. Mountain Ridge's Austin Kryszczuk in particular was outstanding both at the plate and on the mound, and the armchair prospectologist in me took note to try my best to remember that kid's name in drafts between 2020 and 2022, most likely.

If anything, the intro brought to mind the description of barnstorming Satchel Paige in this wonderful book, and how everyone else on the diamond was just window dressing.

Perhaps it's all for the best. Of course, there was a lot of chatter last night about the Sports Illustrated cover jinx. And during the game on Twitter, for the strong-stomached out there, was @FanSince09 retweeting the dregs of the Internet. To spare your eyeballs, I summed it up thusly:

No matter. They play tonight in the loser's bracket, against Jackie Robinson West, for a chance at a rematch with Mountain Ridge for the U.S. Championship on Saturday. It'll take some heavy lifting, as Mo'ne Davis will not be available to pitch.

Here's a little bit about Jackie Robinson West, Taney's opponent tonight. Their claim to fame, to mix with Taney's multi-culti gender-bending, is that they are and all-African American team. This team is from the south side of Chicago, which is the baddest part of town, and they are pretty fun to watch. Like Mountain Ridge, they can hit!

Let's hope Taney can pull out a little of its own #Illadelph Let's go let's go.
